It's loud, rude and very funny – and if you can move past Mila Kunis being a mother of two tweens, then new film Bad Moms may be just what you need in your life right now.
The movie follows Amy Mitchell, played by Mila Kunis, as her life falls apart and she comes up against Christina Applegate's Gwendolyn, the power-hungry president of their school's Parent Teacher Association.
There's not really much of a plot – it's basically The Hangover for mums – but amidst the dick jokes, binge drinking and hilarious performances by Kristen Bell and Kathryn Hahn, there's a few key lessons any parent can take home with them. Here's what I learnt.
1. Every mum needs a girl crew
Kiki (Kristin Bell) is a stay-at-home mum with four kids and no friends. Carla (the incredible Kathryn Hahn) is a loudmouth single mum shunned by the in-crowd at the school gate. Once they join forces with Amy, they realise what's been missing from their lives ... mainly boozy brunches and a group of women who always have your back.
2. Stop judging other mothers
Gwendolyn judges Amy for having to work and for bringing supermarket doughnuts to a cake stall. Everyone judges Carla. But Gwendolyn has her own issues to worry about. No one really knows what's going on in anyone else's life, so wouldn't it be better if we all just tried to help each other out a little?
3. Stop doing everything for your kids
Amy does everything for her tween-age kids, from making their breakfast to papier mâché-ing their school projects ... but once she embraces being a 'bad mum' she's surprised by what her kids can achieve on their own. If kids never have an opportunity to fail, they'll never grow.
4. Know your worth
Men get a pretty bad rap in Bad Moms, which is not entirely fair. But many will recognise the dad who sits back and plays on his phone while mum gets dinner ready after working all day herself, or the clueless boss who judges working mums for working part-time even when they are more productive than everyone else in the office. Sometimes you need to stand up and demand fair treatment.
5. Buy nice underwear
Because you never know when Jay Hernandez will turn up in your life. Or maybe because it makes you feel good and you deserve it. If fancy knickers aren't your thing, maybe it's a new book or tickets to see your favourite band in concert.
Sometimes if feels like all we do as mums is shop for other people - but it's nice to buy something for yourself too.
Bad Moms lands in cinemas Australia-wide on August 10.
