Traditional Music of Ireland, Vol. 2: Songs and Dances from Down, Kerry, and Clare
Various Artists FW08782 / FW 8782
Music historian and Folkways music producer Samuel B. Charters recorded this collection of traditional Irish music in 1960. He captured two singers at a typical pub in County Down; however, as he points out in the informative liner notes, the music is very different than what “usually passes for barroom singing in other countries.” Eight selections, recorded in the County Kerry coastal village of Ballyheigue, are instrumental dances (reels and jigs) and airs performed on violin, tin whistle, and Uilleann pipes. The album also includes a snippet of an Irish-language conversation.
