ANZ has warned customers of a scam text message that urges customers to click on a link to "avoid suspension" of their accounts.

The "urgent" SMS implores customers to "review and update your ANZ account to avoid suspension".

The bank responded by posting on its Facebook and Twitter pages: "If you receive this SMS requesting you to click a link to review your account, please delete it immediately,"

An ANZ spokeswoman said later: "We became aware of a hoax SMS after a number of ANZ customers contacted us through social media and the call centre this morning.

"To alert customers and raise public awareness of the threat, we posted an example of the hoax SMS on the ANZ Facebook and Twitter pages.

"The ANZ Cyber Crime team has since deactivated the hoax link in the text message.

"Any customers who are concerned should contact ANZ on 13 13 14."

It is unclear how many people have received the SMS or when it originated.

Multiple commenters on the Facebook post reported having received messages like this for months.

In an unrelated issue, NSW Police are warning Southern Highlands residents to be on the alert for a phone scam.

Police said they had received numerous reports of an offender stealing identities before calling the victims purporting to be a senior employee of their bank and requesting their PINs.

A number of people have lost money as a result of the scam, police said.
