Tiling is a skilled job in the building and construction sector. There are two main types of tiling work: Roof tiling and wall and floor tiling. What the two have in common is a need for a sharp eye for detail, careful measurement and an excellent ability to work with one's hands. A roof tiler (sometimes simply called a roofer) will also need a head for heights and be willing to work outdoors in all kinds of weather conditions. Wall and floor tilers need to know how to prepare any kind of surface for the application of tiles and may have to work in more cramped conditions than roof tilers.
Both types of tiler will need to be familiar with the materials associated with their respective work, including a practical knowledge of different materials and what kinds of tiles are appropriate for different types of buildings and surfaces. Most tilers also have some knowledge of a different area of construction or decoration, too, which may prove useful when you're looking for work.
The main responsibility of a tiler is to select the right tools and materials for the job at hand. After that, the primary responsibility becomes to produce high-quality work that will last and won't leak or otherwise fall apart. You may be working with a colleague, boss or apprentice, so you should be able to work as part of a team and take or give instruction as necessary. You may also be partly or wholly responsible for surveying sites in order to provide customers with estimates, as well as making sure you have all the right materials and equipment on the day.
