As of just the 1980s, North Hobart was considered somewhat of a rough place to live. Located directly north of the city of Hobart in Tasmania, it was clear that this suburb needed some revitalization and a plan was set in motion to do just that.
The key to changing this neighbourhood lied in energizing Elizabeth Street. Over the last few decades, this main road in North Hobart has been transformed to include many higher end restaurants cafés and the Elizabeth Street Mall. Except on a smaller scale, this street area could easily be compared with Lygon Street situated in Melbourne. The residential areas in this suburb have also been improved, and now median home prices are often over $400,000.
With a population of just over 2,500 people, North Hobart continues to steadily attract families and professionals. It is home to many prominent public and private schools, Tasmania's only independent cinema, State Cinema, and the original Hungry Jack's location.
