Systems engineers design and coordinate large and complex scientific and engineering projects such as the development of new transport systems, new communication systems or the design of an aeroplane.
It's their job to gather all the information that is needed in a system and devise several possible ways of designing the system. They are responsible for coordinating the work of other expert engineers such as electronics specialists and structural engineers.
Systems engineers work for government agencies, computer companies, and other industries that need to solve large and complex engineering problems such as defence and aerospace, medical engineering and national security.
It's their job to help design systems that reduce project risk, improve the likelihood of success and provide lower life cycle costs.
They usually work normal working hours but may have to work overtime to meet deadlines. Systems engineers often work in small teams and have to communicate with a verity of people to make the project happen.

Responsibilities & Skills

It's a systems engineer's job to gather all the information that is needed in a system and devise several possible ways of designing the system. They then use computers and mathematical methods such as probability and statistics to develop models to help them choose the best way to design the system.
They are responsible for coordinating the work of other expert engineers such as electronics specialists and structural engineers.
