About Fluxblog

My name is Matthew Perpetua, and I’ve been writing Fluxblog on nearly every weekday since February of 2002. I live in Park Slope, Brooklyn, and I grew up in a small town called Cold Spring, which is located about 80 minutes north of Manhattan. I am a graduate of Parsons School of Design, but I have not done much in the way of visual art for a while. (It’s expensive.)

I am the director of quizzes and games at BuzzFeed, and before that I was the site’s music editor and primary music critic from 2012 through 2014. Prior to that I worked at Rolling Stone and Public Radio International, and was a contributor to Pitchfork, Vulture, Spin, Associated Press, MTV, eMusic, Slate, and The Atlantic.

I am also the author of Pop Songs 07-08, a website in which I wrote an entry for every album track and notable rarity in the R.E.M. discography. The site is more or less complete as of this writing, but I will be returning to write about the songs on the band’s most recent release Accelerate sometime in the next year or so. Even if you don’t care about R.E.M., I think it’s worth checking out, as I think some of my best critical writing appears on that site.

In the summers of 2006 and 2007, I wrote a bunch of reviews for the Movie Binge website. I’m very fond of several of my reviews on that site.
