The two risk mistakes
8 Aug 2016 | 2:46 amRisk mistake number one: Risk means failure. This worldview equates any risk, no matter how slim, with a certainty. If the chances of hurting yourself skydiving are 1%, it's easy to ignore the 99% likelihood that it will go beautifully. If you carry this worldview around, you're not going to take many risks, because your fundamental misunderstanding is that whatever is uncertain is bad. Risk mistake number two: Low risk events don't happen. This is the stock investor who freaks out when the market doesn't go up the way he and everyone else expected it to. The reason that some investments offer higher returns is that they're not guaranteed to work. Implicit in that high return, then, is the clear warning... -
It happens around the edges
7 Aug 2016 | 1:54 amAt any gathering of people, from a high school assembly to the General Assembly at the UN, from a conference to a rehearsal at the orchestra, the really interesting conversations and actions almost always happen around the edges. If you could eavesdrop on the homecoming queen or the sitting prime minister, you'd hear very little of value. These folks think they have too much to lose to do something that feels risky, and everything that's interesting is risky. Change almost always starts at the edges and moves toward the center. -
Scientist, Engineer and Operations Manager
6 Aug 2016 | 2:42 amA career is often based on one of these three stances: The Scientist does experiments. Sometimes they work, sometimes they fail. She takes good notes. Comes up with a theory. Works to disprove it. Publishes the work. Moves on to more experiments. The Engineer builds things that work. Take existing practices, weave them together and create a bridge that won't fall down, write code that won't crash, design an HR department that's efficient and effective. The Operations Manager takes the handbook and executes on it. Brilliantly. Promises, kept. Hands on, full communications, on time. The scientist invents the train. The engineer builds it out. The operations manager makes it run on time. Operations... -
Conservation and concentration of effort
5 Aug 2016 | 2:01 amThe woman sitting next to me on the plane is successful by any measure--she's happy, engaged, making a difference. And she confessed that she doesn't buy anything from Amazon, doesn't use Facebook, rarely connects online. How is this possible? I think it's because true effort multipliers are rare indeed. Without a doubt, a good tool helps us do a task better, but often, particularly online, there's so much effort and overhead and fear associated with the tools we use that sometimes they don't leverage our work as much as we give them credit for. It might be that time spent knitting, reading, being introspective and digging deep is more productive than checking a Twitter feed just one more time. There...

How I Got a Book Deal Through My Travel Blog
9 Aug 2016 | 7:00 amThis is a guest contribution from Lauren Juliff. I was sitting on my bed in a mosquito-filled guesthouse in Belize when I received the email. It was from an editor at one of the biggest publishing companies in the world – she’d stumbled across my travel blog and noticed I was working on a book about my adventures; she wanted to know if I could send her a draft of what I’d written so far. I didn’t know whether to laugh, cry, or pass out. When I’d decided to write a travel memoir, I hadn’t been sure I’d ever finish it. I wasn’t even convinced I was a good enough writer to pull it off. As I was battling my way through those early planning stages, a book deal had been the last thing I was... -

Wait Where Did Yesterday Go
9 Aug 2016 | 4:12 pmIt’s practically September, you know. The year is almost over. How much did you accomplish? Can you measure it in any way? Do you have any markers? I’ll tell you straight out that I didn’t do nearly enough to cover myself in this regard. I didn’t track it well enough. Wait: Where Did Yesterday Go? To the positive, I’ve worked really hard at following the 20 Minute Plan. That means that I’ve put 3 hours of work towards my priorities in every single day. To the minus, I still didn’t tighten up my goals enough, nor did I work a big enough and meaningful enough plan. The Right Kind of Advertising
2 Aug 2016 | 6:50 amMatthew McConaughey is smart, and so are the people at Wild Turkey, a Kentucky maker of bourbon. They approached the actor to be the celebrity spokesman for their product. You’ve seen it a million times before. But Matthew wanted more. He said that he wanted to dig in and get his hands in the clay of it all, to be a bigger part of the story and not just a character in it. So now he’s their creative director. His first project? This six minute documentary. It starts out the way you’d expect, but I like just how quickly it goes into the details of the people behind the drink. It’s easy to forget that every product has a story, but that’s where McConaughey can prove his mettle. His job is to show us why this... -
The Motivation Habit
1 Aug 2016 | 8:37 amI just got back from a half hour of rucking (which is hiking around with a backpack full of weight – in my case, 55 lbs). I’ve been doing this almost daily for three weeks straight, heading into my fourth. The training I’m working on has eight weeks of this in the menu before I get back to “regular” weight lifting. For whatever reason, I’ve found rucking to be the most consistent fitness effort I’ve ever put forth. It has me thinking about habits and motivation. This is important to your business and ownership pursuits. I’ll talk you through it. Pokemon Go is a Phenomenon – Get Into It
11 Jul 2016 | 7:56 amI never write about the bleeding edge of things. It doesn’t benefit most people to run out and try something very new most times. But I really think you should give Pokemon Go a try and I’ll explain why. What is Pokemon Go? If you’ve ever heard of the video game / card game / cartoon / multi billion dollar franchise that is Pokemon, it’s about a bunch of trainers who catch and train wild creatures in little balls so that they can battle each other (not bloody, but more like sporting). Again, this has been a super popular video game, a card game, etc.Continue ReadingThe post Pokemon Go is a Phenomenon – Get Into It appeared first on chrisbrogan.com.

9 Aug 2016 | 6:00 amYou know the old adage: you never get a second chance to make a first impression. That maxim is certainly true in the email marketing world. Your email welcome message is the first message new subscribers receive when they register for a free account with your site or subscribe to your email list. A well-crafted welcome message creates an initial connection with a new subscriber. It’s the first step toward establishing a solid long-term relationship with that person. But all too often, content marketers treat their email welcome messages as afterthoughts — notes they write as quickly as possible so they can get to more important tasks. That’s a huge wasted opportunity. Read on to discover five... -
The Friendly Way to Adapt Your Content Like a Flexible Yoga Instructor
8 Aug 2016 | 6:00 amRestorative yoga is a gentle, passive practice that promotes relaxation in the body. The other day at the start of my weekly restorative yoga class, our instructor asked us which areas of the body we’d like to focus on that day. A few other regular students shouted out, “Shoulders! … Lower back! … Psoas!” However, I stayed quiet because I started writing this article in my head. Class that day wasn’t going to be restorative for me because I viewed my yoga instructor as a content marketer and her students as her audience members. While she likely already had a series of poses in mind to teach that day, she asked her audience for feedback that would shape her lesson plan. Tailoring the asanas... -

How to Make Your Writing Real
4 Aug 2016 | 6:00 amIn this day and age, substance matters. What you say must be meaningful to the people you’re trying to attract. Your content must solve real problems and satisfy real desires. So why should it matter how you say it? The reality is, how you say it has always mattered, and it matters even more today. For content marketing, it’s basically the difference between success and failure. You’re in a battle for attention. A headline that doesn’t specifically convey a compelling promise results in content that is too often simply ignored. Beyond that, your copy has to hold that precious attention, sentence by sentence, until the conclusion. Even the appearance of your content on the page matters when... -

Who are the startups upgrading the auto industry?
9 Aug 2016 | 3:30 pmThe auto industry has seen a flurry of startups and private investment enter the market in the past five years, as cars become more connected, electric, and autonomous. Startups range from one man units to large teams, with some valuations exceeding $1 billion. But who are the startups? In a CB Insights report (infographic below), the venture capital database firm attempts to “unbundle” the automobile and show what these startups are working on. Automation takes up the lion’s share of TV and news coverage, but as you can see in the infographic, there is plenty of other parts of the automobile that are seeing startup interest. While most of the startups have received less than $50 million in funding, it... -
myDevices and Arduino partner to speed up IoT deployment
9 Aug 2016 | 3:00 pmmyDevices and Arduino announced on Tuesday a partnership that connects Cayenne, a drag-and-drop Internet of Things (IoT) project builder, with Arduino’s large open-source hardware developer boards. Developers are now able to use Cayenne to visualize sensor data and control components of the Arduino board. myDevices claims the partnership will expedite IoT deployments, because its project builder removes a lot of the arduous manual steps. IIoT awesome, but only 25 percent of execs are deploying it
9 Aug 2016 | 2:28 pmAn overwhelming majority of business leaders said that the adoption of Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) is critical to their company’s future success, but only a quarter of them are deploying the technology today. In the survey, released by Genpact Research Institute, it said data security was the most prominent reason why IIoT deployments were not happening today. Business leaders are also worried about lack of technology skills, use of legacy systems, and privacy issues. Image Credit: Genpact Research Institute “IIoT has the potential to transform traditional supply chain practices saving companies valuable resources and time,” said Guy Yehiav, CEO of Profitect. “Yet, businesses are cautious... -
What is going on at Google’s self-driving car unit?
8 Aug 2016 | 11:30 pmGoogle is losing three key executives in its self-driving car unit, including Chris Urmson, the chief technology officer and technical lead. Urmson was, for many, the face of Google’s self-driving car. He spoke at most events, indicated what the unit was focused on, and is a well respected figure in the self-driving industry. See Also: Boeing eyes a solution with Google Glass Before joining Google, Urmson was an assistant professor at Carnegie Mellon University. During his time, his team won a DARPA grand challenge that involved driving an autonomous car in the desert. He doesn’t have a clear idea of what’s next, but said he is “ready for a fresh challenge.” That may hint at things slowing down... -

When they evaluated the opportunities within IoT, they realized the enormous potential and began to develop new...

Developers “Own” The Code, So Shouldn’t Designers “Own” The Experience?
9 Aug 2016 | 6:42 amWe've all been there. You spent months gathering business requirements, working out complex user journeys, crafting precision interface elements and testing them on a representative sample of users, only to see a final product that bears little resemblance to the desired experience. Maybe you should have been more forceful and insisted on an agile approach, despite your belief that the organization wasn't ready? Perhaps you should have done a better job with your pattern portfolios, ensuring that the developers used your modular code library rather than creating five different variations of a carousel. Or, maybe... -
A Glimpse Into The Future With React Native For Web
8 Aug 2016 | 3:13 amOne of the hardest decisions to make when starting a new app is which platforms to target. A mobile app gives you more control and better performance but isn’t as universal as the web. If you’re making a mobile app, can you afford to support both iOS and Android? What about trying to build a mobile app and a responsive web app? Ultimately, the best experience for your customers is for your app to work everywhere, but the development and maintenance costs of that can be prohibitive. The post A Glimpse Into The Future With React Native For Web appeared first on Smashing Magazine. -
Web Development Reading List #148: CSS Color Syntax Change, Browser News, And Hidden Expectations
5 Aug 2016 | 4:47 amI shut down my browser on Wednesday, accidentally having a setting switched on that clears history and all sessions. First, I was sad to have lost many tabs with articles I stored “for later”. At the same time, it felt refreshing, liberating to have a clean browser window with zero tabs open. So my new goal is to start work in the morning with a completely clean browser window at least once a week. In other news: I spent several hours fixing broken links this week, and as a result I can’t say how happy I am that archive.is and archive.org exist to prevent content from disappearing forever. Still, some of the... -

Lens Review: Sigma 20mm F1.4 DG HSM Art Lens
9 Aug 2016 | 12:00 pmIn my opinion, one of the best developments to happen in photography recently is the stepped-up offerings of third party lens manufacturers. Early in my photography career, third party lenses were decent alternatives for a lower cost option, but my own experience was that the cost savings also came at a cost in performance. Those lenses weren’t as sharp, focused slower, and weren’t built to the same quality of similar lenses by Nikon and Canon (and other camera brands). The Sigma 20mm lens allows for capturing expansive views when photographing landscapes. Enter Sigma’s Art lineup of lenses. When the Sigma 35mm f/1.4 Art lens was introduced in 2012, it ushered in a new era of third party lenses,... -
Lightroom Mastery: The Power of the Adjustment Brush
9 Aug 2016 | 10:00 amIf there is one thing I wish I would have spent more time learning early on in my time with Lightroom, it’s the adjustment brush. Lightroom is an incredible editing tool, arguably the easiest one to use, and the quickest to learn. The one thing that took me a while to wrap my head around when starting out, was how to use the Adjustment Brush. In this article I’d like to share a quick excerpt from the new Lightroom Mastery course I created for Digital Photography School. I hope you find it helpful. Why the Adjustment Brush is Great Lightroom excels at making changes to the entire image (global adjustments) super simple and effective. It really becomes a joy to use Lightroom once you get the hang of... -
How to Use Split Toning to Make Your Photos Stand Out
9 Aug 2016 | 7:00 amHave you ever taken a picture and then been disappointed, because it didn’t capture the moment? Maybe it looked exactly like what you saw, but when you viewed the image afterwards it was lacking something. This is one of the greatest challenges photographers face, to express a feeling or vision in a two-dimensional medium. One of the most overlooked tools in the photographer’s processing kit is color. Example of a warm split tone. I’m not talking about the color of the things in your photograph, like a red car or yellow dress. I mean the overall color cast, the tone of your image, is important too. Colors affect the way people feel, so much so that there is a whole body of science around it. Even some... -
A Simple Explanation of the Camera Mode Dial
8 Aug 2016 | 12:55 pmIf you have a more advanced camera like a DSLR or mirrorless, or even a high-end pocket model, it’s a good bet that somewhere on the top of the camera body you will find a circular dial (the camera mode dial) with a whole lot of strange letters like: M, Tv (or S), Av (or A), P, and maybe even a U1 or U2 (or C1, C2) thrown in for good measure. There is also a friendly safe green option, that may say Auto, or depending on the type of camera you have, is just represented by a green rectangle. Most beginners know this option the best, since it essentially puts your camera in the driver’s seat, and forces it to do all the heavy lifting of figuring out the exposure, while all you need to do is point your camera... -
Tips for Learning How to See Photographically
8 Aug 2016 | 7:00 amOpen your eyes: learn to appreciate the wonder that is all around you The camera is definitely a tool that can be used to capture moments in time, and record memories for posterity. However, the potential is there for so much more than that. If you think of the assembly of plastic, metal, and electronic gadgetry you hold in your hands as a paintbrush, and the world around you as paint, then untold possibilities await. Look at ordinary objects in a new way One way to investigate this idea is to use your camera as an instrument, to turn the ordinary and mundane aspects of life into something unique. For example, when you take your vehicle to the car wash and sit inside while the machines do their work on the...

Lighting 102: One More Thing
31 Jul 2016 | 2:15 pmIn Lighting 102, we have learned some of the basic physical controls that we can apply to light: angle, distance, size, restriction. We've also learned how to identify and control the zones of light that fall onto our subjects: diffused highlight, specular highlight, diffused shadow, diffused highlight to shadow transfer. But there is another control lever that is more complex, more powerful and more evocative than all of the ones listed above. Lighting 102: Restriction

Lighting 102: Controlling Specular Highlights
31 Jul 2016 | 1:54 pmWe have all had to deal with specular highlights, even if we did not know what they were called. Think about portraits of people you have made in direct sunlight. Remember that glaring spot on their face or forehead? That was the specular highlight of the sun. And if the person was sweating or had oily skin it only made matters worse, as that sheen is very efficient at throwing back a hard specular. That reflection is a function of the intensity of the light source. More specifically, think of it as intensity per square inch. And understanding this starts to tell us how to control it.Read more »

Your “Stacking” Questions Answered
5 Aug 2016 | 1:16 amHi Gang: Had a number of questions about the “Auto Stack” post (and stacking in general) that I did on Wednesday, so I thought I’d do a really quick video and answer some of them, so here ya go: Have a great weekend everybody, and we’ll see ya here on Monday. I dunno….could be time for a giveaway! Best, -Scott P.S. Over on my blog today, I did a quick video for Photoshop users on how they can get the same Pano Feature we have here in Lightroom. It’s kinda hidden, so I think it’ll be helpful for all those non-Lightroom users out there, so if you know one (and we all do), maybe you’ll send ’em over to this link. The post Your “Stacking” Questions Answered appeared first on Lightroom Killer... -
Have Lightroom Automatically Organize Your Collection Using “Auto Stack”
3 Aug 2016 | 1:16 amHi Gang. If you haven’t considered using the Auto Stack command to quickly bring some order to your collections (creating pre-sorted mini-collections inside your collection), give this a quick look: [NOTE: This feature also works in Folders, where it was first introduced. Thanks to reader MattS for the reminder.] STEP ONE: Here’s a collection of photos I took a couple of years ago in Amsterdam, and although you’re only seeing 24 photos here on screen, if you kept scrolling down and scrolling down you’d see that there are actually 444 photos in this collection. These photos were shot at a handful of different locations and times. To have Lightroom automatically sort them into tidy stacks of photos for you,... -
My Tuesday Blog Posts Are Now Moving To Wednesdays (Wild Cheers Ensue!)

Anyway, I have a really helpful one tomorrow (and it took me forever to write it), so I hope you’ll check back here then. Also, don’t forget – I’m looking for a Lightroom Guru/Writer to add to the blog crew here. If you’re a Lightroom Shark and have lots of cool tips to share, Tuesdays could be yours (along with a check-a-roonie). Hit me up here in the comments or message me over on my Facebook page. See you tomorrow on my new Wednesday blogging day! -Scott P.S. I am psyched! The one and only Matt... -
How to “Work Offline” In Lightroom Mobile (And When You Might Want To)
1 Aug 2016 | 1:16 amMornin’ everybody – here’s to great Monday (everybody, come on, do it with me….”groan!”). OK, today we’re looking at why you might want to take a Collection “Offline” in Lightroom Mobile, and how to do it (I covered this about a year and half ago, but the interface has changed pretty dramatically, so that old way doesn’t work. Plus, we have a LOT of new folks here on LKT so I thought it was time to revisit it, because this is really helpful to know. The Main Reason You’re going to be somewhere where there is not Internet access (or really, really slow internet), and so you won’t be able to pull down the full-size Smart Preview of all the images in a particular collection (without that internet connection,...

New Semiconductor Processes Offer Power Efficiency Opportunities for Apple Watch
9 Aug 2016 | 7:51 amOne of the key challenges for Apple in developing the Apple Watch was figuring out how to maintain acceptable battery life for the device in the face of power-hungry components such as the main processor and display. With watchOS 3 introduced at WWDC in June, Apple showed off the ability to allow multiple Apple Watch apps to remain active and refresh in the background, acknowledging that its initial approach to managing power and other system resources was conservative but that real-world experience had shown the device could handle more demanding tasks.
