Those whose lives have been uprooted and torn apart by conflict or natural disaster, UNHCR exists to help them. This is our story.
The High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) was established in December 1950. The Second World War left over one million refugees far from home and governments in need of assistance to coordinate the crisis. UNHCR was created to help. The founders thought their task would only take three years but new conflicts broke out and more families were forced flee their homes. In 1951 we started with 34 employees. By the end of 2013 we had over 8,000 people working in 126 countries.

Conflict and persecution caused global forced displacement to escalate sharply in 2015, reaching the highest level ever recorded.
UNHCR’s annual Global Trends Report said 65.3 million people were displaced as of the end of 2015, compared to 59.5 million just 12 months earlier. This is not only a 21st-century high, but also the first time the threshold of 60 million has been crossed.

UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, has announced the appointment of Cate Blanchett as a Global Goodwill Ambassador.
The announcement comes as Cate returns from Jordan where she witnessed the ongoing humanitarian support to people displaced by conflict in Syria. She met Syrian refugee families to hear first-hand about the perilous journeys they had undertaken and the daily challenges they face.
Cate has been working with UNHCR to raise awareness about the forcibly displaced. In 2015, she traveled to Lebanon to meet Syrian refugees and to hear about the experiences of stateless people as part of her support for UNHCR’s #IBelong Campaign. She has also supported World Refugee Day, UNHCR’s appeal for the Europe refugee crisis, and attended the Women in the World Conference in New Delhi to represent UNHCR and moderate a high level panel discussion on the global refugee crisis.
Syrian refugee Alaa (shown meeting Cate in the video) is a DAFI scholar studying to be a teacher at University. The global refugee crisis is so great that the UN refugee agency and other agencies are struggling to respond to and meet all the humanitarian needs they face.
Displacement and refugee exoduses have marked many continents: just in the last twelve months, Yemen has witnessed 1.1 million displaced people and refugees; an additional half a million people fled from their homes in South Sudan; and in Libya, a further 300,000 are now displaced within the country. Elsewhere, tens of thousands flee gang violence in Central America, while 94,000 have crossed the Bay of Bengal in search of protection.

United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees
The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), also known as the UN Refugee Agency, is a United Nations agency mandated to protect and support refugees at the request of a government or the UN itself and assists in their voluntary repatriation, local integration or resettlement to a third country. Its headquarters are in Geneva, Switzerland and is a member of the United Nations Development Group. The UNHCR has won two Nobel Peace Prizes, once in 1954 and again in 1981.
History
Following the demise of the League of Nations and the formation of the United Nations the international community was acutely aware of the refugee crisis following the end of World War II. In 1947, the International Refugee Organization (IRO) was founded by the United Nations. The IRO was the first international agency to deal comprehensively with all aspects pertaining to refugees' lives. Preceding this was the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration, which was established in 1944 to address the millions of people displaced across Europe as a result of World War II.

Angelina Jolie Pitt (/dʒoʊˈliː/ joh-LEE; née Voight; June 4, 1975) is an American actress, filmmaker, and humanitarian. The High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) was established in December 1950. The Second World War left over one million refugees far from home and governments in need of assistance to coordinate the crisis. UNHCR was created to help. The founders thought their task would only take three years but new conflicts broke out and more families were forced flee their homes. In 1951 we started with 34 employees. By the end of 2013 we had over 8,000 people working in 126 countries.

The announcement comes as Cate returns from Jordan where she witnessed the ongoing humanitarian support to people displaced by conflict in Syria. She met Syrian refugee families to hear first-hand about the perilous journeys they had undertaken and the daily challenges they face.
Cate has been working with UNHCR to raise awareness about the forcibly displaced. In 2015, she traveled to Lebanon to meet Syrian refugees and to hear about the experiences of stateless people as part of her support for UNHCR’s #IBelong Campaign. She has also supported World Refugee Day, UNHCR’s appeal for the Europe refugee crisis, and attended the Women in the World Conference in New Delhi to represent UNHCR and moderate a high level panel discussion on the global refugee crisis.
