Most recently, he has written and acted in the internationally successful limited series The Pillars of the Earth (named the Fifth Best Miniseries of All Time) and recently prepped his stage adaptation of The Exorcist, which had its West End premiere in late autumn 2017. John Pielmeier
John Pielmeier (born February 23, 1949) is an American playwright and screenwriter.
Life and career
Pielmeier was born in Altoona, Pennsylvania, the son of Louise (Blackburn) and Len Pielmeier. He was raised Catholic. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the Catholic University of America in 1970 and a Master of Fine Arts degree from Pennsylvania State University in 1978. He began his career as an actor, working with such repertory companies as Actors Theater of Louisville and the Guthrie Theater.
In 1976, Pielmeier's first play, A Chosen Room, was produced in Minneapolis. Three years later, Agnes of God was performed in a staged reading at the O'Neill National Playwrights' Conference in Waterford, Connecticut and won the 1979 Great American Play Contest. A full production was mounted for the Humana Festival of New American Plays at the Actors Theatre of Louisville in 1980, and the Broadway production opened in March 1982 at the Music Box Theatre, where it ran for 599 performances. His screenplay for the 1985 screen adaptation earned him a nomination for the Writers Guild of America Award for Best Screenplay Based on Material from Another Medium.

Agnes of God
Agnes of God is a play by John Pielmeier which tells the story of a novice nun who gives birth and insists that the child was the result of a virgin conception. A psychiatrist and the mother superior of the convent clash during the resulting investigation. The title is a pun on the Latin phrase Agnus Dei (Lamb of God).
A film adaptation was released in 1985, starring Jane Fonda, Anne Bancroft and Meg Tilly.
The stage play contains a great deal more dialogue than the film and relies solely on the three main characters: Martha, the psychiatrist; the Mother Superior; and Agnes, the novice. There are no other characters on stage. All three roles are considered demanding for the actors playing them. Martha covers the full gamut of emotion during the play, from nurturer to antagonist, from hard nosed court psychiatrist and atheist to faith-searching healer. She is always on stage and has only three small respites from monologues or dialogue while Agnes and the Mother Superior enact flashbacks to events at the convent. The Mother Superior must expound the possibilities of miracles while recognizing the realities of today's world. Agnes is a beautiful but tormented soul whose abusive upbringing has affected her ability to think rationally.

It's as if she's throwing a big hook under my ribs and tries to pull me up but I can't move and all I can do is sing in her voice, it's the Lady's voice, God loves you! (silence) God loves you. (silence) I don't eat because I have been commanded by God. Suffering is beautiful. Christ said it in the Bible. He said, "Suffer the little children, for of such is the Kingdom of Heaven." JOHN PIELMEIER began his career with the play and movie Agnes of God. Since then he has had three more plays mounted on Broadway and over twenty-five film, television movies and miniseries produced. Most recently he has written and acted in the internationally successful limited series The Pillars of the Earth (named the 5th Best Miniseries of All Time!) and premiered his stage adaptation of The Exorcist in London’s West End prior to its Broadway opening in 2018. His first novel, Hook’s Tale, has recently been published by Scribner to wonderful reviews. In between he has received the Humanitas Award (plus two nominations), five Writers’ Guild Award nominations, a Gemini nomination, an Edgar Award, the Camie Award, a Christopher Award, and his projects have won a Gemini Award and been nominated for the Emmy Award (three times) and the Golden Globe Award. He is married to writer Irene O’Garden and makes his home in upstate New York.

Η ψυχίατρος Δρ. Μάρθα Λίβινγκστόουν διορίζεται από το δικαστήριο για να καθορίσει τη διανοητική σταθερότητα της αδερφής Αγνής, μιας νέας καλόγριας που κατηγορείται για τη δολοφονία ενός βρέφους το οποίο κυοφόρησε και γέννησε κρυφά. Η Αγνή, η οποία προστατεύεται σθεναρά από την Ηγουμένη Μύριαμ Ρουθ, αρνείται όχι μόνο τη δολοφονία αλλά και την ύπαρξη της εγκυμοσύνης, και κατά συνέπεια του ίδιου του παιδιού, υποστηρίζοντας πως όλα είναι σκευωρία της αστυνομίας.
Οι ερωτήσεις εξουσιάζουν: πώς η Αγνή έμεινε έγκυος δεδομένου ότι δεν συνάντησε κανέναν άντρα όσο καιρό βρίσκεται έγκλειστη στο μοναστήρι; Συνειδητοποιεί πώς μένει κανείς έγκυος; Σκότωσε όντως η ίδια το νεογέννητο; Την βοήθησε κάποιος να διαπράξει το έγκλημα; Είναι η Αγνή ένα όργανο του Θεού ή απλά ψυχοπαθής; Υπάρχει μια απόλυτη αλήθεια;
Το τέλος του έργου μας αφήνει ακόμα με ερωτήσεις, αλλά μας επιτρέπει να συνεχίσουμε την αναζήτηση μόνοι μας! Κι αυτό το κάνει διαχρονικό, ειδικά στις μέρες μας!

"Loosely based on a true story, this play focuses on the tormented and disturbed 21 year old postulate—Agnes—who was found unconscious in her room with a dead baby in her wastebasket, and who now is accused of murder. Agnes claims she has no recollection of the incident and refuses to confront the reality of the event. Court-appointed psychiatrist, Dr. Martha Livingstone, is brought in to interview Agnes and discover the truth behind her veiled and cloistered mind. JOHN PIELMEIER began his career with the play and movie Agnes of God. Since then, he has had three more plays mounted on Broadway and more than 25 film, television movies and miniseries produced. Most recently, he has written and acted in the internationally successful limited series The Pillars of the Earth (named the Fifth Best Miniseries of All Time) and recently prepped his stage adaptation of The Exorcist, which had its West End premiere in late autumn 2017. (It previously played in Birmingham, England, to glorious reviews and enthusiastic standing ovations.) His first novel, Hook’s Tale, was published by Scribner in July 2017. In addition, he has received the Humanitas Award (plus two nominations), five Writers’ Guild Award nominations, a Gemini nomination, an Edgar Award, the Camie Award, a Christopher Award, and his projects have won a Gemini Award and been nominated for the Emmy Award (three times) and the Golden Globe Award. John Pielmeier began his career with the play and movie Agnes of God. Since then he has had three more plays mounted on Broadway and twenty-five film, television movies and miniseries produced. Most recently he has written and acted in the internationally successful limited series The Pillars of the Earth, and is currently developing a series for Showtime while prepping his stage adaptation of The Exorcist for Broadway and the West End. In between he has received the Humanitas Award (plus two nominations), five Writers’ Guild Award nominations, a Gemini nomination, an Edgar Award, the Camie Award, a Christopher Award, and his projects have won a Gemini Award and been nominated for the Emmy Award (three times) and the Golden Globe Award. He is married to writer Irene O’Garden and makes his home in upstate New York.
