Local 107.3FM Artist in Residence 2016

23 June 2016 | By stationmanager in Arts+Culture, Community, New Brunswick, News, Saint John, Station News | Comments Off

With immense thanks to the Saint John Community Arts Board funding program, Saint John’s campus-based community radio station, Local 107.3FM, is seeking an artist in residence for August 2016. The flexible residency will run for three weeks including a week of preparation and a week and a half of residency that will culminate in a performance or display and an artist talk.

This residency is open to a professional, amateur, or aspiring artist to develop and exhibit their practice while increasing the opportunities for New Brunswick students and residents to develop their awareness of the arts through direct contact with eminent professionals. The application is open to a wide range of disciplines including music, literary arts, media arts, creative projects, etc. While applications will be open to all interested, particular consideration will be given towards women, youth, students, and local/New Brunswick residents.

The exciting potential challenge of this project will be to find creative ways in which to present media to a radio audience that is not normally an audio experience. We aim to provide space for creative commentary, creative expression, and experimentation which will include a minimum of three radio programs that will air on Local 107.3FM and be preserved physically and digitally. As described, this project will aim to engage and educate the public while creating an opportunity to develop the arts in our community.

Submission Guidelines for Residency Proposals

- Artist(s) bio & statement
- Project description
- Sample work
- If your work is not audio-based, please describe how it will translate to radio

The accepted candidate will be expected to:
- create a minimum of three radio programs;
- present the project to the public;
- and, provide a workshop or artists talk.

Send all applications to stephanie@cfmh.ca with the subject line: “Artist in Residence: (insert your name).” Applications close on July 15 at noon.

The residency will last for three weeks and, while the dates are flexible, the intended duration is August 7 – 27, 2016. The residency includes $1000 in compensation.

Welcome Sadie Donahue To Our Team This Summer!

01 June 2016 | By stationmanager in Announcement, Community, New Brunswick, News, Saint John, Station News | Comments Off

Local 107.3FM is happy to announce the inclusion of summer intern Sadie Donahue to our team for the next eight weeks as our Marketing/Fundraising Assistant. A local artist in her own right who is working towards obtaining a Bachelor of Music degree at Mount Allison University, Sadie joins us with experience from CHMA 106.9 FM in Sackville where, in addition to producing radio, she has been involved in organization, promotion, sponsorship, networking, and more.

Sadie writes: “Becoming so involved with the station gave me the chance to meet people I may have otherwise not met, introduced me to music that I now love, and has taught me not only the importance of reaching out to a community, but how to reach a community. Radio is important to me because it gives a community a mutual interest, a mutual goal, and a sense of a collective purpose for your area. It can also be a way for an individual to express themselves to a community, whether it is through their discussions/music on their show or what an individual chooses to vote for within a certain poll.”

Say “Hi!” to Sadie when you see her around the station and events this summer.

Name A New Beer From Picaroons Traditional Ales!

26 May 2016 | By stationmanager in Arts+Culture, Community, New Brunswick, News, Saint John, Station News | Comments Off

Local 107.3FM is excited to announce a partnership between local brewer and arts & culture supporter Picaroons Traditional Ales, Atlantic Canada’s Wine, Beer and Spirits Writer Craig Pinhey, and your local campus-based community radio station to develop and release a new beer on Thursday, June 30. The launch, featuring a local artist, will kick-off your long Canada Day long weekend and sales of the new brew will support Local-FM while supplies last.

There’s a lot to do before the beer is launched, however, including naming it! For the next two weeks, until Wednesday, June 15, we will be accepting submissions sent to brian@cfmh.ca with the subject line: “Picaroons Traditional Ales – Radio Beer.” The winner, as selected by Craig Pinhey and Local-FM staff, will receive a free growler of our debut suds.

The beer is designed and co-brewed by Craig and will be an English Session Ale style (similar to their “Best Bitter”) and low alcohol at 4.5% ABV, appropriate for drinking in moderation.

Send us your ideas and, until then, stay tuned for more details about our launch party at Picaroons General Store on Canterbury St.
