Irate Mo. Public Defender's Budget Fix: Put Governor To Work

Law360, New York (August 4, 2016, 8:13 PM ET) -- Faced with budget cuts and an increased caseload, the director of the Missouri State Public Defender System has appointed an unlikely attorney to represent an indigent defendant — Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon.

In a letter to Nixon outlining his frustration with the governor's budgeting, state public defender director Michael Barrett wrote that Missouri law gives him the authority to assign cases to any member of the state bar.
