Jean Paul Getty KBE (December 15, 1892 – June 6, 1976) was an American industrialist. He founded the Getty Oil Company, and in 1957 Fortune magazine named him the richest living American, while the 1966 Guinness Book of Records named him as the world's richest private citizen, worth an estimated $1.2 billion (approximately $8.8 billion in 2015). At his death, he was worth more than $2 billion (approximately $8.3 billion in 2015). A book published in 1996 ranked him as the 67th richest American who ever lived, based on his wealth as a percentage of the gross national product.
Despite his wealth, Getty was known for being a notorious miser. He famously negotiated his grandson's ransom.
Getty was an avid collector of art and antiquities; his collection formed the basis of the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, California, and over $661 million (approximately $2.7 billion in 2015) of his estate was left to the museum after his death. He established the J. Paul Getty Trust in 1953. The trust is the world's wealthiest art institution, and operates the J. Paul Getty Museum, the Getty Foundation, the Getty Research Institute, and the Getty Conservation Institute.
"Everyone talks about how much money I make. I wonder what sort of accomplishment it is to make a lot of money." --J. Paul Getty, 1958. "In my opinion, an individual without any love of the arts cannot be considered completely civilized." --J. Paul Getty, 1965. Mr. Getty's collection, bequest, and deep interest in the arts are the basis for the collections of the Getty Museum today. Many works of art have been acquired since his death, but those he personally collected can still be seen in the galleries. Love art? Partying, freestyling, & pop locking in Rick's Garage, and then get thrown out of the J. Paul Getty Museum-- 48 hours of drunk. (2002) Famous Pro Soaper & DJ/rapper of the Lyrical Theory squad, Eddie Ramirez & myself had been drinking since early in the day. After I had just recently gotten married to Sarah, and with only about a weeks-time left before I was about to be shipping off to Navy bootcamp we had to party it up--BIG TIME! The homie Rick, a.k.a. Detox, was throwing a little kick back at his house in his garage, so we headed over for a little pop lockin' & freestyle sesh—where Eddie busted out phat. After the camera ran out of battery we headed back to my mom's house to put the battery on the charge, and then went out to drink more non-stop for the rest of the night. On no sleep...
