I got a new SSD, so I used this opportunity to compare the performance of SSD vs SSHD vs HDD drives.
I took a system image, restored it onto the other drives and measured how long it takes to complete a full restart. I did several restarts as the performance improves as you restart over and over.
OS is Windows 10 with a few applications that start-up automatically.

Boot time comparison between currently the 3 major storage technologies out there - SSD (Solid State Drives), Hybrid Hard Drives, and HDD (Hard Drives). All 3 drives were cloned from a Patriot Pyro SE 120GB test bench drive, so all data contained in each drive is identical. Additionally, each drive was boot up, sat idle for a couple minutes then shut down twice before a final run was recorded. For the hybrid hard drive, I recorded both first boot and third boot in order to get a good idea of what kind of performance increase to expect after the drive "learns" usage patterns.

There are lots of options for retro hard drives.
Period correct IDE drives, SCSI, CF and SD memory card adapters, SATA to IDE adapters or SATA PCI controllers.
In this video I will show you the benefits of going with a Seagate SSHD, a Solid State Hybrid Drive.
This drive is extremely fast, but using SeaTools you can configure the capacity, turning it into a 8 GB drive for DOS 6.22, 120 GB for Windows 98 or any size you want. Very handy for older machines with BIOS capacity limits for example.
The drive has 8 GB of SSD, which buffers frequently accessed data. This all happens automatically, there is nothing to configure, the OS doesn't need to support TRIM and you don't need to use SSD maintenance tools either.
In this video I will demonstrate using SeaTools, we will look at using the drive with a Pentium 4, Pentium 3 and 386 machine. I am configuring the drive as 32 GB and 8 GB and installing Windows 98 as well as MS-DOS 6.22.

Hybrid drive
In computing, a hybrid drive (also known by the initialism SSHD) is a logical or physical storage device that combines NAND flash solid-state drive (SSD) with hard disk drive (HDD) technology, with the intent of adding some of the speed of SSDs to the cost-effective storage capacity of traditional HDDs. The purpose of the SSD in a hybrid drive is to act as a cache for the data stored on the HDD, improving the overall performance by keeping copies of the most frequently used data on the SSD.
There are two main technologies used for implementing hybrid drives: dual-drive hybrid systems and solid-state hybrid drives. In dual-drive hybrid systems, separate SSD and HDD devices are installed in the same computer, having the data placement optimization performed either manually by the end user, or automatically by the operating system through creation of a "hybrid" logical device. In solid-state hybrid drives, SSD and HDD functionalities are built into the same physical storage device, by adding a certain amount of NAND flash storage to a hard disk drive; the data placement decisions are performed either entirely by the device (self-optimized mode), or through placement "hints" supplied by the operating system (host-hinted mode).

Boot time comparison between currently the 3 major storage technologies out there - SSD (Solid State Drives), Hybrid Hard Drives, and HDD (Hard Drives). All 3 drives were cloned from a Patriot Pyro SE 120GB test bench drive, so all data contained in each drive is identical. Additionally, each drive was boot up, sat idle for a couple minutes then shut down twice before a final run was recorded. For the hybrid hard drive, I recorded both first boot and third boot in order to get a good idea of what kind of performance increase to expect after the drive "learns" usage patterns.

There are lots of options for retro hard drives.
Period correct IDE drives, SCSI, CF and SD memory card adapters, SATA to IDE adapters or SATA PCI controllers.
In this video I will show you the benefits of going with a Seagate SSHD, a Solid State Hybrid Drive.
This drive is extremely fast, but using SeaTools you can configure the capacity, turning it into a 8 GB drive for DOS 6.22, 120 GB for Windows 98 or any size you want. Very handy for older machines with BIOS capacity limits for example.
The drive has 8 GB of SSD, which buffers frequently accessed data. This all happens automatically, there is nothing to configure, the OS doesn't need to support TRIM and you don't need to use SSD maintenance tools either.
In this video I will demonstrate using SeaTools, we will look at using the drive with a Pentium 4, Pentium 3 and 386 machine. I am configuring the drive as 32 GB and 8 GB and installing Windows 98 as well as MS-DOS 6.22.
