Brixton is a district within the London Borough of Lambeth in south London.
Around 1067, a man called 'Brihtsige' built a stone structure and it became a regular community meeting place known as 'Brixis-tane', a saxon term meaning 'at the stone of Brihtsige'. Over time, Brixistane morphed into the name Brixton.
Electric Avenue was one of the first streets to have electric street lighting installed and is home to the famous Brixton market.
By the 1960’s, the markets were the go to place for Caribbean's seeking out rare things like Scotch bonnet peppers and salt-fish to make things like patties, and fritters and authentic Jerk based dishes previously only available ‘back home’.
The covered in Brixton Village & Market Row markets are intrinsically linked to the history giving the area its strong Afro-Caribbean culture and ambience.
The Barrier Block is a daunting block of flats often mistaken for Brixton Prison. It's a truly brutalist-inspired structure designed by a Polish lady. The harsh, uninviting sight of it has a fearful reputation which it has also lived up to in the past.
Brixton has birthed some of the most influential aspects of modern culture in British society since the mid-20th century.
The Brixton Splash is a street festival held on the first Sunday of every August till 7pm with sound systems, soul food stalls and live music. It celebrates the historic local culture and provides free art workshops and volunteer opportunities for the youngsters.
Windrush Square was named to mark the 50 years since the Empire Windrush ship arrived with 492 initial migrants from Jamaica three years after World War Two in 1948. It features both the United Kingdom's national war memorial to African and Caribbean service personnel who fought in the First and Second World Wars and the Grade II-listed Georgian building housing the Black Cultural Archives. The archives are free to visit Tuesday to Saturday from 10-6pm.
Brixton is just as famous for its vitality and tolerance as it is for riots and crime. It was the scene of riots in 1981 during a time of deep social unrest. To tackle the rising crime from gangs, Police attempted to carry out an extremely controversial new law; the 'sus law' which allowed stop and search procedures by plain clothed officers on the mere "suspicion" of possible wrongdoing by any individual.
Within 5 years, 9 cinemas were built mostly under the railway arches in Brixton. The Ritzy Picturehouse on Coldharbour Lane, opened in 1911 as "the Electric Pavilion" and is widely regarded as one of the first purpose-built cinemas for film in the UK. It's the only one of those 9 to still exist.
This place is a vibrant melting pot of colour, sound, people, variety, smell and activity with a rare freedom that invites you to be you, earning it much admiration and pride.
Robert David Jones was born in Brixton and became known to the world as David Bowie. He was a beloved Brixtonian and this particular mural, created in his memory, is popular with visitors and tourists.
Pop Brixton has transformed a disused plot of land into a trendy space for food and live entertainment, seven days a week, till late. Its made out of old shipping containers, a prettier version of the successful Boxpark concept.

The Guns of Brixton
"The Guns of Brixton" is a song by the English punk rock band The Clash. It was written and sung by bassist Paul Simonon, who grew up in Brixton, south London. The song has a strong reggae influence, reflecting the culture of the area, with a knowing nod to the classic reggae gangster film The Harder They Come.
Origins and recording
"The Guns of Brixton" was the first song recorded by the band to be composed by Paul Simonon and to feature him as lead vocalist. By London Calling, Paul Simonon had learned to play guitar, and started contributing more to the songwriting.
The band, separated from their manager Bernard Rhodes, had to leave their rehearsal studio in Camden Town and find another location. The band began work on London Calling during the summer of 1979 at the so-called Vanilla Studios in Pimlico. The band quickly wrote and recorded demos, and, in August 1979, entered Wessex Studios to begin recording the album. Produced by Guy Stevens, who at the time had alcohol and drug problems and whose production methods were unconventional, it was recorded within a matter of weeks, with many songs, including "The Guns of Brixton", recorded in one or two takes. It was also revealed that while recording the lead vocals for the song, Simonon sang the song while staring directly at a CBS executive who dropped by the studio during the sessions, giving Simonon the desired amount of emotion in his voice.

Brixton is a district of London, located in the borough of Lambeth in south London. The area is identified in the London Plan as one of 35 major centres in Greater London.
Brixton is mainly residential with a prominent street market and substantial retail sector. It is a multiethnic community, with a large percentage of its population being of African and Caribbean descent. It lies within Inner south London and is bordered by Stockwell, Clapham, Streatham, Camberwell, Tulse Hill and Herne Hill. The district houses the main offices of the London Borough of Lambeth.
History
The name Brixton is thought to originate from Brixistane, meaning the stone of Brixi, a Saxon lord. Brixi is thought to have erected a boundary stone to mark the meeting place of the ancient hundred court of Surrey. The location is unknown but is thought to be at the top of Brixton Hill, at a road known at the time as Bristow or Brixton Causeway, long before any settlement in the area. Brixton marks the rise from the marshes of North Lambeth up to the hills of Upper Norwood and Streatham. At the time the River Effra flowed from its source in Upper Norwood through Herne Hill to Brixton. At Brixton the river was crossed by low bridges for Roman roads to the south coast of Britain, now Brixton Road and Clapham Road. The main roads were connected through a network of medieval country lanes, such as Acre Lane, Coldharbour Lane, Brixton Water Lane and Lyham Road, formerly Black Lane. It was only at the end of the 18th century that villages and settlements formed around Brixton, as the original woodland was gradually reduced until the area was covered in farmland and market gardens known for game and strawberries.

Hundred of Brixton
Brixton Hundred or the Hundred of Brixton was an ancient hundred in the north east of the county of Surrey, England. Its area has been entirely absorbed by the growth of London; with its name currently referring to the Brixton district. Its former area now corresponds to the London Borough of Southwark, the London Borough of Lambeth, the London Borough of Wandsworth and parts of the London Borough of Merton and the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames.
History
The name is first recorded as Brixiges stan in 1062, meaning stone of a man called Beorhtsige. The stone may have been the location that early hundred meetings took place. Gower suggests that the stone was located at the boundary of Streatham, Clapham and Lambeth parishes. A nearby location on Brixton Hill became the location for the hundred gallows. Brixton Hill had been known as Bristowe Causeway long before the modern Brixton area was developed. The Surrey House of Correction, now known as Brixton Prison, was opened there in 1820.

Brixton is a district within the London Borough of Lambeth in south London.
Around 1067, a man called 'Brihtsige' built a stone structure and it became a regular community meeting place known as 'Brixis-tane', a saxon term meaning 'at the stone of Brihtsige'. Over time, Brixistane morphed into the name Brixton.
Electric Avenue was one of the first streets to have electric street lighting installed and is home to the famous Brixton market.
By the 1960’s, the markets were the go to place for Caribbean's seeking out rare things like Scotch bonnet peppers and salt-fish to make things like patties, and fritters and authentic Jerk based dishes previously only available ‘back home’.
The covered in Brixton Village & Market Row markets are intrinsically linked to the history giving the area its strong Afro-Caribbean culture and ambience.
The Barrier Block is a daunting block of flats often mistaken for Brixton Prison. It's a truly brutalist-inspired structure designed by a Polish lady. The harsh, uninviting sight of it has a fearful reputation which it has also lived up to in the past.
Brixton has birthed some of the most influential aspects of modern culture in British society since the mid-20th century.
The Brixton Splash is a street festival held on the first Sunday of every August till 7pm with sound systems, soul food stalls and live music. It celebrates the historic local culture and provides free art workshops and volunteer opportunities for the youngsters.
Windrush Square was named to mark the 50 years since the Empire Windrush ship arrived with 492 initial migrants from Jamaica three years after World War Two in 1948. It features both the United Kingdom's national war memorial to African and Caribbean service personnel who fought in the First and Second World Wars and the Grade II-listed Georgian building housing the Black Cultural Archives. The archives are free to visit Tuesday to Saturday from 10-6pm.
Brixton is just as famous for its vitality and tolerance as it is for riots and crime. It was the scene of riots in 1981 during a time of deep social unrest. To tackle the rising crime from gangs, Police attempted to carry out an extremely controversial new law; the 'sus law' which allowed stop and search procedures by plain clothed officers on the mere "suspicion" of possible wrongdoing by any individual.
Within 5 years, 9 cinemas were built mostly under the railway arches in Brixton. The Ritzy Picturehouse on Coldharbour Lane, opened in 1911 as "the Electric Pavilion" and is widely regarded as one of the first purpose-built cinemas for film in the UK. It's the only one of those 9 to still exist.
This place is a vibrant melting pot of colour, sound, people, variety, smell and activity with a rare freedom that invites you to be you, earning it much admiration and pride.
Robert David Jones was born in Brixton and became known to the world as David Bowie. He was a beloved Brixtonian and this particular mural, created in his memory, is popular with visitors and tourists.
Pop Brixton has transformed a disused plot of land into a trendy space for food and live entertainment, seven days a week, till late. Its made out of old shipping containers, a prettier version of the successful Boxpark concept.

Brixton is a district within the London Borough of Lambeth in south London.
Around 1067, a man called 'Brihtsige' built a stone structure and it became a regular community meeting place known as 'Brixis-tane', a saxon term meaning 'at the stone of Brihtsige'. Over time, Brixistane morphed into the name Brixton.
Electric Avenue was one of the first streets to have electric street lighting installed and is home to the famous Brixton market.
By the 1960’s, the markets were the go to place for Caribbean's seeking out rare things like Scotch bonnet peppers and salt-fish to make things like patties, and fritters and authentic Jerk based dishes previously only available ‘back home’.
The covered in Brixton Village & Market Row markets are intrinsically linked to the history giving the area its strong Afro-Caribbean culture and ambience.
The Barrier Block is a daunting block of flats often mistaken for Brixton Prison. It's a truly brutalist-inspired structure designed by a Polish lady. The harsh, uninviting sight of it has a fearful reputation which it has also lived up to in the past.
Brixton has birthed some of the most influential aspects of modern culture in British society since the mid-20th century.
The Brixton Splash is a street festival held on the first Sunday of every August till 7pm with sound systems, soul food stalls and live music. It celebrates the historic local culture and provides free art workshops and volunteer opportunities for the youngsters.
Windrush Square was named to mark the 50 years since the Empire Windrush ship arrived with 492 initial migrants from Jamaica three years after World War Two in 1948. It features both the United Kingdom's national war memorial to African and Caribbean service personnel who fought in the First and Second World Wars and the Grade II-listed Georgian building housing the Black Cultural Archives. The archives are free to visit Tuesday to Saturday from 10-6pm.
Brixton is just as famous for its vitality and tolerance as it is for riots and crime. It was the scene of riots in 1981 during a time of deep social unrest. To tackle the rising crime from gangs, Police attempted to carry out an extremely controversial new law; the 'sus law' which allowed stop and search procedures by plain clothed officers on the mere "suspicion" of possible wrongdoing by any individual.
Within 5 years, 9 cinemas were built mostly under the railway arches in Brixton. The Ritzy Picturehouse on Coldharbour Lane, opened in 1911 as "the Electric Pavilion" and is widely regarded as one of the first purpose-built cinemas for film in the UK. It's the only one of those 9 to still exist.
This place is a vibrant melting pot of colour, sound, people, variety, smell and activity with a rare freedom that invites you to be you, earning it much admiration and pride.
Robert David Jones was born in Brixton and became known to the world as David Bowie. He was a beloved Brixtonian and this particular mural, created in his memory, is popular with visitors and tourists.
Pop Brixton has transformed a disused plot of land into a trendy space for food and live entertainment, seven days a week, till late. Its made out of old shipping containers, a prettier version of the successful Boxpark concept.

The Guns of Brixton
"The Guns of Brixton" is a song by the English punk rock band The Clash. It was written and sung by bassist Paul Simonon, who grew up in Brixton, south London. The song has a strong reggae influence, reflecting the culture of the area, with a knowing nod to the classic reggae gangster film The Harder They Come.
Origins and recording
"The Guns of Brixton" was the first song recorded by the band to be composed by Paul Simonon and to feature him as lead vocalist. By London Calling, Paul Simonon had learned to play guitar, and started contributing more to the songwriting.
The band, separated from their manager Bernard Rhodes, had to leave their rehearsal studio in Camden Town and find another location. The band began work on London Calling during the summer of 1979 at the so-called Vanilla Studios in Pimlico. The band quickly wrote and recorded demos, and, in August 1979, entered Wessex Studios to begin recording the album. Produced by Guy Stevens, who at the time had alcohol and drug problems and whose production methods were unconventional, it was recorded within a matter of weeks, with many songs, including "The Guns of Brixton", recorded in one or two takes. It was also revealed that while recording the lead vocals for the song, Simonon sang the song while staring directly at a CBS executive who dropped by the studio during the sessions, giving Simonon the desired amount of emotion in his voice.
