In the Telecommunications world, a Transmitter is a device that produces radio waves radiating from an antenna.
In the world of process control, a Transmitter is a device that converts the signal produced by a sensor into a standard instrumentation signal representing a process variable being measured and controlled.
In the early days of process control, the standard instrumentation signal was pneumatic while today it is more likely to be an electrical signal.
The standard pneumatic signal is 3 to 15 psi. The standard electrical signals are 1 to 5 volts or 4 to 20 mA.
As mentioned earlier, the electrical transmitter output signal is usually a range of voltage (1 to 5V) or current (4 to 20 mA).
In process control, it is understood and goes without saying that the transmitter output range represents the 0 to 100% of the sensed physical variable.
For example, the transmitter would produce an output current range of 4 to 20 mA for a measured temperature range of 0 to 150 degrees Fahrenheit (0 to 100%).
The four major process variables measured and represented by a transmitter are Pressure, Level, Temperature, and Flow.
Transmitters are also used in industry to measure other variables such as Position and Speed and chemical properties such as pH and Conductivity.
A Transmitter requires a power supply to operate.
A 4-wire transmitter has 2 wires connected to a power supply and 2 signal wires connected to the PLC. The power supply can be AC or DC depending on the vendor and model.
A 2-wire transmitter has only 2 wires. These 2 wires provide power for the transmitter and are also the signal lines!
New technologies have spawned the development of Smart Transmitters.
Smart Transmitters not only produce the 4 to 20 mA process variable signal, but also transmit and receive digital information such as Instrument Tag Names, Calibration Data, and Sensor Diagnostics. Protocols such as HART are commonly used on Smart Transmitters.

A Pressure Transmitter is an instrument connected to a Pressure Transducer.
The output of a Pressure Transmitter is an analog electrical voltage or a current signal representing 0 to 100% of the pressure range sensed by the transducer.
Pressure transmitters can measure absolute, gauge, or differential pressures.
Absolute pressure is referenced to a perfect vacuum which is considered 0 psi! We express vacuum pressure as 0 psi (a).
Atmospheric pressure is usually about 14.7 psi (a).
The most common pressure measurement is gauge pressure which is the total pressure minus the atmospheric pressure.
Atmospheric pressure is 0 psi (g).
Let’s have a look at an example of a Pressure Transmitter measuring process pressure of gasses in a pipeline.

Over the years, the terms sensor, transducer, and transmitter have become confusing because they are often used interchangeably and indiscriminately by different vendors.
The terms sensor and transducer have been around for a very long time, but in the world of process control, the term transmitter is not very old.
In particular, the term transducer is tossed around as a name for many devices and instruments.
Just to confuse the issue, sensor and transducer have often been used as synonyms.
1) A sensor is a device or element that performs the initial measurement as it senses the changes in a physical variable.
A sensor is a device that makes physical contact with the variable being measured and detects changes and provides a corresponding output signal that can be measured.
2) A transducer is a device that converts one form of energy to another. A Transducer provides an output quantity having a specified relation to an input quantity.
A strain gauge is a transducer whose resistance value changes proportionally to the strain it experiences.
All sensors are transducers, but not all transducers are sensors.
Consider a loudspeaker that converts an electrical signal into motion. The loudspeaker is a transducer, but not a sensor.
3) The term transmitter has more than one definition.
- The process control term was likely borrowed from the Telecommunications world where a Transmitter is a device that produces and transmits radio waves radiating from an antenna. These radio waves are eventually detected and demodulated by a Radio Receiver.
- In the world of process control, a Transmitter is a device that transmits a standard instrumentation signal representing a physical variable being measured.
The standard electrical signals are 1-5 V or 4-20 mA which represents 0-100% of the physical variables being measured. This transmitted signal is detected by a Receiver such as an Analog Input on a PLC or a DCS.
A sensor performs the initial measurement. If necessary, a transducer converts this initial measurement into an electrical signal that is then amplified and standardized by the transmitter.
Here's an example… We are measuring a process pressure with a range of 0-100 psi. Our Sensor/transducer performs the initial measurement and converts it to an electrical signal of 0-3 mV. The transmitter then converts that signal to a standard signal of 0-5 V, which is received by a PLC analog input module.
4) A Pressure Switch is a two-part device consisting of a sensing transducer and an electrical switch.
A pressure switch has a transducer just like a pressure transmitter. That’s where the similarity ends.
A Pressure Transmitter produces an analog electrical voltage or a current signal representing 0-100% of physical process pressure. A pressure switch has electrical contacts that open and close at a specific pressure.
Let’s illustrate with an example… We have a process control system where we need to open a valve when the pressure in a pipe reaches 50 psi.
- We can use a pressure transmitter calibrated to produce a 4-20 mA output for a pressure range of 0-100 psi.
We need an analog input module on our PLC, and we need to scale the analog module and insert code into the PLC program so that the 50 psi value triggers an event to open the valve.
- It’s much easier to use a pressure switch connected to a simple PLC digital input module. The PLC valve control logic is much simpler as well.

Over the years, the terms sensor, transducer, and transmitter have become confusing because they are often used interchangeably and indiscriminately by different vendors.
The terms sensor and transducer have been around for a very long time, but in the world of process control, the term transmitter is not very old.
In particular, the term transducer is tossed around as a name for many devices and instruments.
Just to confuse the issue, sensor and transducer have often been used as synonyms.
1) A sensor is a device or element that performs the initial measurement as it senses the changes in a physical variable.
A sensor is a device that makes physical contact with the variable being measured and detects changes and provides a corresponding output signal that can be measured.
2) A transducer is a device that converts one form of energy to another. A Transducer provides an output quantity having a specified relation to an input quantity.
A strain gauge is a transducer whose resistance value changes proportionally to the strain it experiences.
All sensors are transducers, but not all transducers are sensors.
Consider a loudspeaker that converts an electrical signal into motion. The loudspeaker is a transducer, but not a sensor.
3) The term transmitter has more than one definition.
- The process control term was likely borrowed from the Telecommunications world where a Transmitter is a device that produces and transmits radio waves radiating from an antenna. These radio waves are eventually detected and demodulated by a Radio Receiver.
- In the world of process control, a Transmitter is a device that transmits a standard instrumentation signal representing a physical variable being measured.
The standard electrical signals are 1-5 V or 4-20 mA which represents 0-100% of the physical variables being measured. This transmitted signal is detected by a Receiver such as an Analog Input on a PLC or a DCS.
A sensor performs the initial measurement. If necessary, a transducer converts this initial measurement into an electrical signal that is then amplified and standardized by the transmitter.
Here's an example… We are measuring a process pressure with a range of 0-100 psi. Our Sensor/transducer performs the initial measurement and converts it to an electrical signal of 0-3 mV. The transmitter then converts that signal to a standard signal of 0-5 V, which is received by a PLC analog input module.
4) A Pressure Switch is a two-part device consisting of a sensing transducer and an electrical switch.
A pressure switch has a transducer just like a pressure transmitter. That’s where the similarity ends.
A Pressure Transmitter produces an analog electrical voltage or a current signal representing 0-100% of physical process pressure. A pressure switch has electrical contacts that open and close at a specific pressure.
Let’s illustrate with an example… We have a process control system where we need to open a valve when the pressure in a pipe reaches 50 psi.
- We can use a pressure transmitter calibrated to produce a 4-20 mA output for a pressure range of 0-100 psi.
We need an analog input module on our PLC, and we need to scale the analog module and insert code into the PLC program so that the 50 psi value triggers an event to open the valve.
- It’s much easier to use a pressure switch connected to a simple PLC digital input module. The PLC valve control logic is much simpler as well.

In this video, we’re going to take a close look at 2-wire and 4-wire transmitters and discuss where they are used and why. We’re also going explore wiring configurations and how transmitters are connected to a PLC.

A transmitter is an instrument that converts the small signal from a sensor to a signal which represents the variable being measured.
Transmitters come in all different shapes and sizes and connect with several types of sensors.
The transmitter output signal representing the variable being measured can be voltage or current.
A transmitter analog output loop contains the transmitter, power supply, and the receiving device which could be a PLC or DCS.
Just like any other instrument, a transmitter needs a power supply to operate. But, is it a 2-wire or a 4-wire transmitter?
The actual wiring connection between the transmitter and the power supply depends upon which type it is.
A 4-wire transmitter has 2 wires connected to a power supply, and 2 signal wires connected to the PLC.
The power supply can be AC or DC depending upon the vendor and model.
As its name states, a 2-wire transmitter has only 2 wires.
In a 2-wire current loop, the transmitter, DC power supply, and PLC are connected in series.
Not only are the 2 wires providing power for the transmitter, but they are also the signal lines!
Earlier we said that the transmitter output can be either current or voltage. Current is by far the most common transmitter output signal for many reasons.
One reason is if the wires between the transmitter and the PLC are very long, there could be significant voltage losses across these wires.
Regardless of the length of wire in a current loop, basic electrical theory tells us that the current is the same in the circuit regardless of where that current is measured.

In this video, we're going to introduce you to a very common device used in process control today, the Temperature Transmitter.
We’ll discuss the sensors used with them, and show you how they are connected in a typical control loop. We’ll also give you an insight into how they are calibrated.
Temperature Transmitters are available in all different shapes and sizes depending on the application and environment they are expected to operate. To name a few, there are:
- DIN rail mounted,
- Field mounted,
- Hockey puck style.
A Temperature Transmitter is a device that converts the signal produced by a temperature sensor into a standard instrumentation signal representing a process variable temperature being measured and controlled.
The most common transmitter instrumentation output signal is 4 to 20 mA.
The signal from the Temperature Transmitter is sent to a Controller that determines what action is required and generates an appropriate output signal.
Controllers are either a PLC or a DCS in process control today.
The Heating/Cooling source exerts a direct influence on the process as directed by the controller.
Most Temperature Transmitters are 2-wire types having only two wires. These two wires provide power for the transmitter and are also the signal lines!
A 4-wire transmitter has two wires connected to a power supply and two signal wires connected to the PLC. The power supply can be AC or DC depending on the vendor and model.
The two most common temperature sensors used in process control are the thermocouple and the Resistance Temperature Detector (RTD).
The thermocouple produces a change in voltage with a temperature change. Thermocouples have only two wires.
An RTD produces a change in resistance with a temperature change. Unlike a thermocouple that has only two leads, an RTD can have two, three, or four leads.
It’s common to see Temperature Transmitters that are capable of working with either an RTD or a thermocouple.
The SMART transmitter is an intelligent transmitter that has an analog output of 4 to 20 mA and also provides digital communication signal information such as Instrument Tag Names, Calibration Data, and Sensor Diagnostics.
These SMART transmitters use HART protocol or FOUNDATION FIELDBUS or PROFIBUS.
A Temperature Transmitter needs to be adjusted or calibrated so that the current output of 4 to 20 mA represents the temperature range of the process variable being measured.
In every calibration scenario, the sensor is replaced by a device that can simulate the output of the sensor over the entire process variable temperature range.
- For a thermocouple, the sensor is replaced by a device that produces a range of millivolts.
- For an RTD, the sensor is replaced by a device that produces a range of resistances. Historically the device that produced a range of resistances was a decade box.
Signal Reference Calibrators can output a variety of electrical signals that can simulate RTDs and Thermocouples making it much easier to calibrate Temperature Transmitters.
Older style Temperature Transmitters have multi-turn potentiometer adjustments called Zero and Span. The Zero pot is adjusted to produce 4 mA when the simulated temperature is 0%, and the Span pot is adjusted to produce 20 mA when the simulated temperature is 100%.
Newer style Temperature Transmitters are programmed or calibrated using the software. The Transmitter is connected to a computer via a serial USB connection.
