Guglielmo Marconi

Guglielmo Marconi, 1st Marquis of Marconi (Italian: [ɡuʎˈʎɛlmo marˈkoːni]; 25 April 1874 – 20 July 1937) was an Italian inventor and electrical engineer, known for his pioneering work on long-distance radio transmission and for his development of Marconi's law and a radio telegraph system. He is often credited as the inventor of radio, and he shared the 1909 Nobel Prize in Physics with Karl Ferdinand Braun "in recognition of their contributions to the development of wireless telegraphy". An entrepreneur, businessman, and founder in Britain in 1897 of The Wireless Telegraph & Signal Company (which became the Marconi Company), Marconi succeeded in making a commercial success of radio by innovating and building on the work of previous experimenters and physicists. In 1929 the King of Italy ennobled Marconi as a Marchese (marquis).

Early years

Taras Shevchenko Place

Taras Shevchenko Place is a street in New York City named after Taras Shevchenko, who is commonly considered the greatest Ukrainian poet. Taras Shevchenko Place connects Sixth and Seventh Streets between Second and Third Avenues in the East Village.

Namesake

Taras Shevchenko (1814-1861) was a Ukrainian writer, painter and political activist whose novels and poems, written in Ukrainian, gave forceful expression to his countrymen's national sentiment at a time when many aspects of their culture, especially the language, were being suppressed by the Russian Empire. In one of his poems, he called for an independent Ukrainian state to be led by a "Ukrainian Washington".

Other names

The street was originally known as Hall Street and then as Hall Place, after Charles Henry Hall, a Harlem landowner who sold the property to the city on Dec. 23, 1828.

City Council changed the name of Hall Place to Taras Shevchenko Place in 1978.

There was an attempt in 2001 by the Cooper Union to rename the street back to Hall Place, by "de-mapping" the Taras Shevchenko name.

Marconi National Historic Sites of Canada

The Marconi National Historic Site and the Marconi Wireless Station National Historic Site are two National Historic Sites of Canada located on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, Canada. Both sites commemorate the efforts of Guglielmo Marconi to transmit transatlantic radio signals between North America and Europe in the first decade of the 20th century. The two sites are located within approximately 8 kilometres (5.0 mi) of one another, and are connected by the Marconi Trail.

Signal Hill in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador is another National Historic Site related to Marconi's work in Canada. Signal Hill was designated, in part, to commemorate Marconi's first transmission tests in 1901.

Marconi National Historic Site

The Marconi National Historic Site of Canada, located at Table Head in Glace Bay, is the site of Guglielmo Marconi's first transatlantic wireless station, callsign VAS, and the first wireless message sent from North America to Europe on December 15, 1902. The site features the remnants of Marconi's transmission towers, a modern amateur radio station, plus a museum chronicling Marconi's achievements.

Marconi Company

The Marconi Company was a British telecommunications and engineering company that technically existed under that rubric from 1963-1987, derived from earlier variations in the name and incorporation, spanning a period from its inception in 1897 until 2006, during which time it underwent numerous changes, mergers and acquisitions. The company was founded by the Italian inventor Guglielmo Marconi and was originally known as The Wireless Telegraph & Signal Company. The company was a pioneer of wireless long distance communication and mass media broadcasting, eventually becoming one of the UKs most successful manufacturing companies. In 1999, its defence manufacturing division, Marconi Electronic Systems, merged with British Aerospace to form BAE Systems. In 2006, extreme financial difficulties led to the collapse of the remaining company, with the bulk of the business acquired by the Swedish telecommunications company, Ericsson.

Who is the real inventor of radio? In 1943, the United States Supreme Court invalidated one of the Marconi patents, number 763,772 (1904), on the basis it had been anticipated by Nikola Tesla, Lodge, and others. After years of patent battles by Marconi's company, the United States Supreme Court, in the 1943 case of Marconi Wireless Telegraph co. of America v. United States, 320 U.S. 1 (1943), said that "it is now held that in the important advance upon his basic patent Marconi did nothing that had not already been seen and disclosed."[26][27][28] Although Marconi claimed that he had no knowledge of prior art from Tesla's patents, the Supreme Court considered his claim false.[29] In addition to that ruling from the Supreme Court, the United States Court of Claims invalidated the fundamental 1935 Marconi patent.[30] This case defined radio by the statement: "A radio communication system requires two tuned circuits each at the transmitter and receiver, all four tuned to the same frequency."[31] The court determined that Tesla's patent clearly was the first to disclose a system which could be used for wireless communication of intelligible messages (such as human voice and music) and used the four-circuit tuned combination

This rare set was built by the Canadian Marconi company in late 1957 or early 1958 (based on the components used) and it features an early Emerson 888 circuit board, which was modified to turn it into a table radio. There were supposedly only around 1000 of these sets made, and it was available in a Walnut, Mahogany or Limed Oak cabinet (I believe this is the walnut version).

He regularly provides reviews and advice for academic papers and students, contributes as author or reviewer to numerous journals and has considerable radio, broadcast and TV experience. He continues to work with a number of museums and collections and has designed a wide range of historic displays, information boards and guidebooks. Raised and educated in Melton Mowbray in Leicestershire, an Honours Degree in Computer Science from Aston University in Birmingham brought him by chance to work at GEC-Marconi Communication Systems’ Writtle site, near Chelmsford in Essex. He spent the first 17 years of his career with various arms of the GEC-Marconi Company worldwide, designing, developing and managing radio, telecommunication and control system projects. Tim left Marconi's in 1999 and spent three more years in senior management within the electronics industry in the City of London. Tim then decided on a career change, finding time to restore a number of classic Jaguar E type cars, he then became a Senior Project Manager for a series of building projects around the world. Tim has written and edited many other books, including "Marconi on the Isle of Wight", produced for the centenary of the closure of the Alum Bay, Royal Needles Hotel station in 2000. A long held interest in early radio sets inherited from his father and a passion for the early days of radio broadcasting led him to write "2MT Writtle - The Birth of British Broadcasting", first published in 1988. After 22 years the second, completely rewritten and much larger edition was published in October 2010. In 2012 he published the story of the world’s first purpose built wireless factory – "Marconi’s New Street Works 1912-2012. Birthplace of the Wireless Age." In 2013 he also published the completely rewritten story of "Marconi on the Isle of Wight", telling the full story of Marconi’s earliest stations and experiments. In 2014 "The Marconi Company and Writtle" was published together with Heritage Writtle. Also in 2014, after 12 years of research and having visited nearly every site he has published "Marconi’s Kind of Magic 1896-1901 Building the Wireless Age" the full and detailed story of the first five years of Marconi's career. Tim has also written a series of papers and pamphlets about early wireless including Marconi in Northern Island, The Hall Street Works, The Marconi Company in WW1 and some specialist papers for Bembridge Fort on the Isle of Wight. Copies of these are available via the website. Others are in preparation. He has also written several radio plays based on the New Street and Writtle broadcasts and a TV script is in production. This is a Marconi Model 121 floor model radio, built in 1938 by the Canadian Marconi Company. Its a triple band radio that had the 'magic eye' above the dial to tell you when it was zoned in to the signal. The guts were all rebuilt with new capacitors, tubes and everything refreshed. The cabinet was still in good shape, so remains as it was. I just had to play some original commercials and shows through it, which helps to feel what it was like back in the late thirties and just after the war before TV really hit the market.

New Street 'veteran' Cliff Hanger, who still works with a former Marconi company, talks about his volunteering role with code-breaking Bletchley Park and his hope for a bright future for the world's first wireless factory at Hall Street, Chelmsford. Cliff agreed to be interviewed by CourtRedHanded (CRHnews) while attending the unique Marconi Exhibition taking place at the original Marconi Wireless and Telegraphy works which Marconi established in 1898. A full scale replica of the Titanic's wireless room takes pride of place at Hall Street whose factory workers saved the lives of Titanic/Lusitania survivors and countless thousands. The worlds first Wireless and Telegraphy factory at Marconi's Hall Street works, hailed as the ‘birthplace of radio' , is featuring a unique exhibition which highlights the part played by these unsung heroes. There are photographs of women, redundant silk weavers, whose nimble fingers spun the copper wires and the tough guys who sweated in the noisy machine shop. Without the SOS equipment they made, 1.500 from the Titanic and Lusitania disasters would have perished, not to mention countless other shipwrecked souls who survived other sinkings. Although MSW is staging an exhibition, its aim has never been to open a Marconi Museum, but to promote the setting up of STEM (Science Technology Engineering Maths) Clubs in the Birthplace of Radio to encourage young people to become future Marconi's and even rocket scientists! To celebrate the history and legacy of Marconi and the Marconi Company in Chelmsford, this commemorative event is hosted between March and May 2016 in the Grade II listed building prior to its conversion into residential and commercial units. This Exhibition has been organised by the Marconi Heritage Group in affiliation with the Chelmsford Civic Society, at the request of the developers MAC Design and Build Ltd to allow the public access to the significant industrial heritage of the building. Archival material from a variety of sources will be showcased, in many cases for the first time. Contributors include The International Marconi Museum in Bologna, The Museum of the History of Science, Oxford, the Essex Record Office, Chelmsford Museums and several private collections. Local families with their own small collections of Marconi-related memorabilia have also contributed. Two lifelong Marconistas recreated the famous 1901 photograph portraying the Great Man and his Right Hand Man with cutting edge equipment on the final day of 'Building the Wireless Age' exhibition at Hall Street, Chelmsford, on Sunday, May 29, 2016. The awesome display included a coherer receiver and spark coil, both originals manufactured at the world's first wireless factory, a Siemens Morse inker that was badged and sold by Marconi, a grasshopper key and a Marconi galvanometer. A fitting end indeed to a remarkable 'Marconi Spring' - three months of weekend public openings before the listed building isdestined to be converted into apartments, a smaller mirror image of the awful fate suffered earlier by the once mighty New Street factory. Can you imagine any other country, say America, Russia, or the Pitcairn Islands, boasting the world's first wireless factory allowing it to become flat!!!!! Whatever did Marconi the man who built this City on electronic rock and roll, do wrong? # Without Marconi's world's first wireless factory at Hall Street, Chelmsford, the Lizard Station would originally have had no communication equipment - apart from the huge aerials - and yet Chelmsford City Council have done nothing to preserve the heritage factory which saved the lives of the Titanic survivors - but they like to boast on road signs that the City is the 'Birthplace of Radio' although most have never even visited it. THE OLDEST SURVIVING MARCONI WIRELESS STATION IN THE WORLD The Museum and Amateur Radio Station at the Lizard Marconi Wireless Station site are run by the National Trust with the Amateur licence being held by the Radio Officers Association. In 1900 the Marconi International Marine Communication Company Ltd was registered and Guglielmo Marconi came to stay at the Housel Bay Hotel in his quest to locate a coastal radio station to receive signals from ships equipped with his apparatus. He was to lease a plot “in the wheat field adjoining the hotel” and the Lizard Wireless Telegraph Station still stands today. Recently restored by the National Trust, it is fitted with spark transmitter and coherer receiver and looks as it did in 1901, when Marconi received the distance record signals of 186 miles from the Isle of Wight. In 1910 the station received an SOS call, which was two years before the Titanic, and was the first recorded reception of SOS by a coast station. The Lizard Wireless Station is the oldest Marconi station to survive in its original state in the world and is located to the west of the Lloyds Signal Station in what appears to be a wooden hut. It is owned by the National Trust and run entirely by a team of volunteers. In addition to the 1901 display, has a fully operational amateur radio station. The Lizard Wireless Station was set up by the Marconi Company at the end of 1900 to supply a ship-shore radio service with ships passing Lizard Point. It also served as a research centre and a monitoring station for the trans Atlantic Poldhu Wireless station at Poldhu Cove, Mullion. The museum is housed in the refurbished original buildings, the interior being, as far as possible, a true facsimile of the station at the start of the 20th century. The establishment of the museum, which is run by the National Trust volunteers. It is open on various days and at various times throughout the year see the opening times page. Opening depends on the weather and staff availability. The equipment is demonstrated to visitors and the volunteers are delighted to give a history of the station.
