Man dies in crash on circuit at Queensland Raceway

A competitor has died after he crashed into a tyre wall during a sprint at Queensland Raceway on Wednesday afternoon.

A man, 68, was racing in a midweek sprint at the Willowbank motor racing circuit when he missed a turn on the track and crashed into a tyre wall at 2.30pm.

Paramedics performed CPR on the man however he died at the scene.

Midweek sprints at the Raceway are designed for road registered, unregistered and race cars and are held over 12 rounds with results counting towards end-of-year trophies.

It is understood Wednesday's sprint involved 4 x 5 laps on the Clubman Circuit.

Forensic Crash Unit have seized the vehicle and police will assess whether a mechanical failure or medical condition caused the crash.

A police spokeswoman said "everything was on the table".

Workplace Health and Safety were making inquiries.
