About sixteen ethnic groups inhabit Sierra Leone, each with their own language and customs. The two largest and most influential are the Temne and the Mende people. The Temne are predominantly found in the north of the country, while the Mende are predominant in the south-east. Although English is the official language spoken at schools and government administration, the Krio language is the most widely spoken language in the country and unites all the different ethnic groups in the country, especially in their trade and social interaction with each other.
Like Kailahun before now, travelling to Kono had become a nightmare. Like Kailahun, Kono district's social infrastructure had badly broken: township roads were horrible, health service delivery was one of the poorest in country and, of course, there was no electricity supply in the whole the district. But with the APC's national development programme, the story of Kono district, like that of Kailahun, is changing dramatically. In this audio, MediaPro proudly presents to you the first episode of how the APC Government's Energy Revolution has turned Koidu a City glowing in electricity.
The West African force deployed in Sierra Leone, known as ECOMOG, forced the AFRC from power in the capital Freetown in mid-February 1998. They subsequently went on to take control of Kenema and other major towns. ECOMOG forces are continued to pursue AFRC/RUF forces in the east of the country, particularly in Kono and Kailahun Districts. Retreating AFRC/RUF forces have committed gross human rights abuses, including torture and ill-treatment - many women and girls have been raped - and deliberate and arbitrary killing of unarmed civilians. This video was filmed by Sierra Leonean cinematographer and journalist Valentine Manley.
The Kono highway in eastern #SierraLeone, funded by the African Development Bank and the Kuwaiti Fund. It used to be one of the worst roads leading to any district headquarter town in the country - perhaps second only to its neighbour, Kailahun. By Umaru Fofana May 10th, 2016

Between 2007 and 2013, the transformation of Makeni from a town that wallowed in pot holes and darkness for nearly 35 years into a city of happiness, light and paved roads clearly in 6 years demonstrates sustained development that is hardly written nor talked about to inform the outside world. There is remarkable development going on around in the history of Sierra Leone.
