A must watch movie for classic film lovers.
Repulsion (1965)
Starring: Catherine Deneuve, Ian Hendry, John Fraser
An eye lights up the screen with several movements in a Brownian motion. It creates the necessary effect of a troubled mind without giving much away. The movie on the screen is a 1965 Roman Polanski movie. It doesn't work in the traditional sense of a psychological movie but it takes you by surprise. The protagonist is a virgin from Brussels who lives in a dichotomy with her sexual inclinations. There is not much said or done through half of the movie. But the silent voices, the imaginary faces and the breaking walls begin to create a destruction of the characters mind at regular intervals. There is also a dead rabbit which is used as a constant reminder of where her mind is about to take the audience.
The character is really beautiful every man lusts for her. But she on the other hand is drawn to something which she herself can't fathom. A force which also makes her vomit at the sight of any kind of intimacy. She begins to be invaded in the very beginning by her sister's boyfriend. The couple keeps making love while she is in the other room leaving her at loggers end. She doesn't get any more respite when the man leaves his toiletries in her glass. There is also another man in her life who keeps hounding her. But he begins to be hounded by his own self doubt and insecurity. He begins to use her as his gateway to his entire problem. But this tends to become little more than what he had bargained for.
The trouble starts when the sister leaves Carol for a holiday. From here turns into a absurdest and psychological fare. Many of the shots in the flat are very unusual and also unsettling. This gives it a very uneasy feeling for the audience. There are some beautiful images of hands tugging at her even fondling her at times. But this used to stress the mental state and is not done very tastefully. The repulsion is more of a human condition which Carol faces on a day to day basis. This leaves her in a dream sort of state most of the time. She works at a Body shop where she tends to customers nails. It is more of repulsion to people which the director must have been going through at the time. There is a thin line which he draws between reality and imaginations. This makes it not very enjoyable to watch but leaves with a sense of what is going through her mind at that very moment. The film is like a study of how Carol's mind distorts to a point where there can't be any exit.

Samantha Geimer has been through a hell of an ordeal for the thirty seven years, and she's finally come out with a tell-all book telling her side of the story. Geimer was raped by Roman Polanski thirty-seven years ago, although his version of the story is completely different. No matter how you slice it, Samantha was a thirteen year old girl who was taken advantage of by a lecherous older man.
While most of the details of the case are well known, reading them in Samantha's own words makes it that much more viscerally disturbing. She explains that as soon as she got to the photoshoot, he asked her to take her shirt off -- and she writes, "My ticket to stardom showed up again. ... Sure the last time was super-uncomfortable, but that was the price of fame."
Later, they headed to Jack Nicholson's house and Samantha reveals that Roman first got her drunk on champagne, and then had her take a Quaalude tranquilizer. Basically, he drugged her so that she couldn't fight back. She reveals that she knew everything was going too far when Roman got into the hot tub with her.
She details the following incident, explaining, "I want out. Now. How f*****g stupid could I be? It's a hard thought to hold on to. The water is hot, and the steam is rising into the night ... I knew this wasn't right ... He pulls me a little closer by the waist and helps hold me up a little and moves me above one of the jets so I can feel the bubble tickling up between my legs. ... There's nothing good about it, but I know what he's getting at. Then everything hits at once. The steam, the heat, the alcohol, the pill and the panic. Have you ever been touched in a way that made you want to jump right out of your skin? This man had a reputation as a great lover. The problem is, he was not my great lover. I could have been any girl, as long as I was female and as long as I was young."
She reveals that Roman refused to listen to her refusals and started kissing her and performing oral sex, and eventually, she just gave up and her mind went 'far away'.
Ughh, how disgusting. Roman Polanski should be arrested and thrown in jail for this, but he's managed to stay in countries without extradition policies to the US. It's unfortunate that the international legal system essentially lets him get away with rape, but what can you do? I wish someone had the guys to drag him back here on his hands and knees, but I don't see that happening any time soon -- especially with the astonishing amount of support he seems to have in Hollywood.
In the late 1970s the film director Roman Polanski admitted to having unlawful sexual intercourse with a 13-year-old girl. He spent 42 days in prison then fled the United States because he feared being given a longer sentence. He was rearrested in Switzerland in 2009 and spent months in prison and under house arrest before being released.
Much has been said and written about what happened, but we have hardly heard anything from the girl herself. Now the woman at the centre of the decades-old scandal, Samantha Geimer, has written a book about how the event changed her life.
She told HARDTalk's Sarah Montague she feels the media and legal circus that followed was more painful than what happened that night.

Roman Polanski
Rajmund Roman Thierry Polański (born 18 August 1933), known professionally as Roman Polanski, is a French-Polish film director, producer, writer, and actor. Having made films in Poland, the United Kingdom, France, and the United States, he is considered one of the few "truly international filmmakers". Born in Paris to Polish parents, he moved with his family back to Poland (Second Polish Republic) in 1937, shortly before the outbreak of World War II. He survived the Holocaust, was educated in Poland (People's Republic of Poland), and became a director of both art house and commercial films.
Polanski's first feature-length film, Knife in the Water (1962), made in Poland, was nominated for a United States Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. He has since received five more Oscar nominations, along with two Baftas, four Césars, a Golden Globe Award and the Palme d'Or of the Cannes Film Festival in France. In the United Kingdom he directed three films, beginning with Repulsion (1965). In 1968 he moved to the United States and cemented his status by directing the horror film Rosemary's Baby (1968), for which Ruth Gordon won an Academy Award as Best Supporting Actress.

An eye lights up the screen with several movements in a Brownian motion. It creates the necessary effect of a troubled mind without giving much away. The movie on the screen is a 1965 Roman Polanski movie. It doesn't work in the traditional sense of a psychological movie but it takes you by surprise. The protagonist is a virgin from Brussels who lives in a dichotomy with her sexual inclinations. There is not much said or done through half of the movie. But the silent voices, the imaginary faces and the breaking walls begin to create a destruction of the characters mind at regular intervals. There is also a dead rabbit which is used as a constant reminder of where her mind is about to take the audience.
The character is really beautiful every man lusts for her. But she on the other hand is drawn to something which she herself can't fathom. A force which also makes her vomit at the sight of any kind of intimacy. She begins to be invaded in the very beginning by her sister's boyfriend. The couple keeps making love while she is in the other room leaving her at loggers end. She doesn't get any more respite when the man leaves his toiletries in her glass. There is also another man in her life who keeps hounding her. But he begins to be hounded by his own self doubt and insecurity. He begins to use her as his gateway to his entire problem. But this tends to become little more than what he had bargained for.
The trouble starts when the sister leaves Carol for a holiday. From here turns into a absurdest and psychological fare. Many of the shots in the flat are very unusual and also unsettling. This gives it a very uneasy feeling for the audience. There are some beautiful images of hands tugging at her even fondling her at times. But this used to stress the mental state and is not done very tastefully. The repulsion is more of a human condition which Carol faces on a day to day basis. This leaves her in a dream sort of state most of the time. She works at a Body shop where she tends to customers nails. It is more of repulsion to people which the director must have been going through at the time. There is a thin line which he draws between reality and imaginations. This makes it not very enjoyable to watch but leaves with a sense of what is going through her mind at that very moment. The film is like a study of how Carol's mind distorts to a point where there can't be any exit.

Later, they headed to Jack Nicholson's house and Samantha reveals that Roman first got her drunk on champagne, and then had her take a Quaalude tranquilizer. Basically, he drugged her so that she couldn't fight back. She reveals that she knew everything was going too far when Roman got into the hot tub with her.
She details the following incident, explaining, "I want out. Now. How f*****g stupid could I be? It's a hard thought to hold on to. The water is hot, and the steam is rising into the night ... I knew this wasn't right ... He pulls me a little closer by the waist and helps hold me up a little and moves me above one of the jets so I can feel the bubble tickling up between my legs. ... There's nothing good about it, but I know what he's getting at. Then everything hits at once. The steam, the heat, the alcohol, the pill and the panic. Have you ever been touched in a way that made you want to jump right out of your skin? This man had a reputation as a great lover. The problem is, he was not my great lover. I could have been any girl, as long as I was female and as long as I was young."
She reveals that Roman refused to listen to her refusals and started kissing her and performing oral sex, and eventually, she just gave up and her mind went 'far away'.
Ughh, how disgusting. Roman Polanski should be arrested and thrown in jail for this, but he's managed to stay in countries without extradition policies to the US. It's unfortunate that the international legal system essentially lets him get away with rape, but what can you do? I wish someone had the guys to drag him back here on his hands and knees, but I don't see that happening any time soon -- especially with the astonishing amount of support he seems to have in Hollywood.
In the late 1970s the film director Roman Polanski admitted to having unlawful sexual intercourse with a 13-year-old girl. He spent 42 days in prison then fled the United States because he feared being given a longer sentence. He was rearrested in Switzerland in 2009 and spent months in prison and under house arrest before being released.
Much has been said and written about what happened, but we have hardly heard anything from the girl herself. Now the woman at the centre of the decades-old scandal, Samantha Geimer, has written a book about how the event changed her life.
She told HARDTalk's Sarah Montague she feels the media and legal circus that followed was more painful than what happened that night.

Rajmund Roman Thierry Polański (París, 18 de agosto de 1933), conocido como Roman Polanski, es director de cine, productor, guionista y actor. Su padre era un pintor polaco de origen judío y su madre procedía de Rusia. En 1943 su madre, católica, fue clasificada como judía y enviada al campo de concentración de Auschwitz donde murió. Su padre y su hermana sobrevivieron a los campos de concentración.
Desde muy joven se interesó por el cine y el teatro y comenzó una carrera como actor ("Sanson" de Andrzej Wajda). Después de dirigir varias películas y ganar premios, se trasladó a Estados Unidos donde en 1967 rodó "El baile de los vampiros".
La película "El pianista" (2001), ambientada en Polonia durante la 2ª Guerra Mundial y con un pianista judío como protagonista, fue rodada entre este país, Alemania y la ciudad de Praga. En 2002 recibió la Palma de Oro de la 55 edición del Festival de Cannes y tres Oscar (actor, guión y director).
El 31 de enero de 2014 se estrena en España "La venus de las pieles" con esposa Emmanuelle Seigner como protagonista.

Repulsion is a 1965 British psychological horror film directed by Roman Polanski, based on a scenario by Gérard Brach and Roman Polanski. It was Polanski's first English language film, and was shot in London, making it his first feature made outside Poland. Plot
Carol Ledoux (Catherine Deneuve), a Belgian manicurist who bites her nails, lives in Kensington, London, with her older sister Helen (Yvonne Furneaux). Carol practically sleepwalks through her days, and interacts awkwardly with men. A would-be suitor, Colin (John Fraser), is flummoxed by her behaviour and she rebuffs his advances, disgusted by them. She hides her head in her pillow against her sister's cries of sexual pleasure with her married boyfriend, Michael (Ian Hendry). When Helen leaves on a holiday to Italy with Michael, Carol appears even more distracted at work, gets sent home, stays in the apartment, leaves a raw, skinned rabbit out to rot, and begins to hallucinate, first seeing the walls cracking, a man breaking in and molesting her, then hands reaching out to grab and attack her. Colin breaks into her apartment when she refuses to acknowledge his adoration and he apologizes for his transgression. When he says he wants to "be with" her "all the time," she bludgeons him to death with a candlestick, dumps the body into the overflowing bathtub, and nails the broken door shut. Later, the imperious landlord (Patrick Wymark) breaks in, looking for the late rent payment. Carol pays him and sits on the sofa, staring into space. He remarks on the decaying state of the apartment, and attempts to ingratiate himself by bringing her a glass of water as he leers at her in her nightgown. When he first propositions her, then sexually assaults her, she gets away. But he comes at her again and she slashes him to death with a straight razor.
When Helen and Michael return, they discover the dead bodies. Michael runs for help. Helen, distraught, finds Carol hiding under the bed in a catatonic state. Neighbors arrive -- curious, concerned and shocked. Michael returns and carries Carol out, staring creepily at her wide-open eye, face and body. A family photograph on the mantel shows Carol as a girl, turned towards a male figure in the photograph with a look that could kill.

Review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes reports that 100% of 48 film critics have given the film a positive review, with a rating average of 8.8 out of 10. Metacritic, which assigns a weighted average score out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, gives the film a score of 91 based on 7 reviews.
Film critic Bosley Crowther of The New York Times gave the film a positive review stating, "An absolute knockout of a movie in the psychological horror line has been accomplished by Roman Polanski in his first English-language film." Jim Emerson, filling in for Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times, included the film in his list entitled "102 Movies You Must See Before...".
Upon the film's release to DVD, Dave Kehr reviewed the film for The New York Times praising the film's techniques and themes, saying "Mr. Polanski uses slow camera movements, a soundtrack carefully composed of distracting, repetitive noises (clocks ticking, bells ringing, hearts thumping) and, once Carol barricades herself in the cramped, dark apartment, explicitly expressionistic effects (cracks suddenly ripping through walls, rough hands reaching out of the darkness to grope her) to depict a plausible schizophrenic episode."
Accolades
At the 15th Berlin International Film Festival in 1965, Repulsion won both the FIPRESCI Prize and the Silver Berlin Bear-Extraordinary Jury Prize. The film was also nominated for a BAFTA in Best Black and White Cinematography.

In 1977, Roman Polanski was arrested in Los Angeles on charges he gave drugs and had sex with a 13-year-old girl he was photographing for Vogue. Eleven months later, having pled guilty to one count, he fled to Europe before sentencing. This film examines that year-long period, using archival footage of the media frenzy and of Polanski's life before the charges, clips from his films, and contemporary interviews with many of the principles - attorneys, the victim, and Polanski's friends and associates.
