A natural satellite is a celestial body that orbits another celestial body of greater mass (e.g., a planet, star, or dwarf planet), which is called its primary. For example, the Moon is a natural satellite of Earth, and Earth is a natural satellite of the Sun.
In the Solar System there are 173 known natural satellites which orbit within 6 planetary satellite systems. In addition, several other objects are known to have satellites, including three IAU-listed dwarf planets: Pluto, Haumea, and Eris.As of January 2012, over 200 minor-planet moons have been discovered. There are 76 known objects in the asteroid belt with satellites (five with two each), four Jupiter trojans, 39 near-Earth objects (two with two satellites each), and 14 Mars-crossers. There are also 84 known natural satellites of trans-Neptunian objects. Some 150 additional small bodies have been observed within the rings of Saturn, but only a few were tracked long enough to establish orbits. Planets around other stars are likely to have satellites as well, and although numerous candidates have been detected to date, none have yet been confirmed.

Although not the largest natural satellite in the Solar System, it is, among the satellites of major planets, the largest relative to the size of the object it orbits (its primary). It is the second-densest satellite among those whose densities are known. The Moon is in synchronous rotation with Earth, always showing the same face with its near side marked by dark volcanic maria that fill between the bright ancient crustal highlands and the prominent impact craters. It is the second-brightest regularly visible celestial object in Earth's sky (after the Sun), as measure...

Radar Observations of 2004 BL86 Detected a Moon Orbiting the Asteroid Asteroid 2004 BL86 passed Earth on Jan. 26, 2015 at 16:19 UTC (11:19am EST). This "movie" of the asteroid was generated from radar data collected on that date by NASA's Deep Space Network antenna at Goldstone, California. Twenty individual images were used. Radar observations allow scientists to better measure an asteroid's size, rotation and location. As a bonus, radar observations of 2004 BL86 detected a tiny moon orbiting the asteroid.
Dione is a natural satellite of Saturn discovered in 1684 b...

NATURAL OM IN MOUNT KAILASH FROM SATELLITE GOOGLE EARTH OM Auṃ or Oṃ, Sanskrit: ॐ) is a sacred sound and a spiritual icon in Indian religions. What is ARTIFICIAL SATELLITE? What does ARTIFICIAL SATELLITE mean? In the context of spaceflight, a satellite is an artificial object which has been intentionally placed into orbit. Such objects are sometimes called artificial satellites to distinguish them from natural satellites such as Earth's Moon. The world's first artificial satellite, the Sputnik 1, was launched by the Soviet Union in 1957. Since then, thousands of satellites have been launched into orbit around the Earth. Some satellites, notably space stations, have been launched in parts and assembled in orbit. Artificial satellites originate from more than 40 countries and have used the satellite launching capabilities of ten nations. About a thousand satellites are currently operational, whereas thousands of unused satellite...
SETI Talks archive: http://seti.org/talks The natural satellites of the giant planets of our Solar System are nearly all locked into resonances. There are spin-orbit resonances, resulting in synchronous rotations as for our Moon, but also orbital resonances between them. This configuration cannot be the result of a random process but is the consequence of slow dissipation acting over the ages, driving the system into a dynamical equilibrium. Quantifying this dissipation yields clues on the internal structure of these bodies and their parent planets. A good way to quantify this process is to elaborate accurate orbital ephemerides of these bodies, in which this dissipation is considered. For that, we must dispose of the last 100 years of astrometric observations. In this talk, Dr. Noyelle...
