When Jason Morris' son Cole was two years old, he broke his thighbone and spent several weeks in a full-body cast. The medical bills came to about $13,000, but Morris, his wife, and six children don't have health insurance. Instead they belong to Samaritan Ministries, an organization of devout Christians who chip in to cover each other's medical bills. Following the usual process at Samaritan, members from all over the country mailed the Morris family small checks that added up to enough money to cover all the bills. "We had the emotional side of it," says Morris, "but the financial side of it was completely taken care of." Samaritan has about 86,000 members spread among all 50 states, which makes it the largest of three "health care sharing ministries" in the U.S. Households of three or ...

Dr. Peter Landless, a former member of President Nelson Mandela’s cardiology team and a recipient of South Africa’s Southern Cross Medal, is the new Health Ministries director for the Seventh-day Adventist Church. The post is one that includes charting the course of health promotion, which has made Seventh-day Adventists the longest-living people group ever studied. The latest results of the ongoing Adventist Health Study 2 -- funded in part by the U.S. National Institutes of Health -- were reported by major international news media in June. In 2009, the Seventh-day Adventist Church became the first denomination to collaborate with the World Health Organization as it sought faith-based partnerships to help implement including the UN Millennium Development Goals in local areas. The denomina...

It's the fifth anniversary of the Iraq War and with talk of it not being even half-way through, we are approaching the 4000th American combat death. More importantly, a recent World Health Organization report based on Iraqi Health Ministry figures estimated that 151,000 Iraqi civilians were killed between March 2003, the start of the invasion, and June 2006. Many of the reports of civilian deaths are disputed. What cannot be argued, however, is another grave consequence of the Iraq War: the displacement crisis as a mass exodus of Iraqis flee the instabilities and ever-increasing sectarian violence at home, tearing their families apart. In mid-January 2008, with the support of the United Nations High Commission For Refugees (UNHCR), I traveled to Amman, Jordan to photograph and record a...
El Fish" is a title taken from a street tacos (mexican fast food) stall which is in front of the building where the Health Ministry is. It constitutes a world in the interior of a taco, populated by a great variety of microscopic beings, humanized amoebas, purulent breeding grounds mixed with meat, bones and guacamole all these seasoned with some sex and cannibalism. An analogy of Mexico City, where excess constitutes an eclecticism of such a difficult digestion as survival.
