Five Minutes Tardy - MySpace http://www.myspace.com/fiveminutestardy BIO: Jeff Winkle I've been writing songs (mainly for guitar and piano) for about 15 years now, since I taught myself to play on my dad's old Ibanez classical guitar in college and came up with my first tune, "Fantastic Plastic", a thoroughly ridiculous and disturbing paean to credit cards. These days my principal gig is as a professor of Classical Languages and Literature, but I still attempt to kick things approaching old school with my cover band Five Minutes Tardy and my (very) sometimes folk-rock venture, Godric. I also enjoy travel, Indian food, and those low-budget Sonic Burger ads. Band: Five Minutes Tardy The idea for Five Minutes Tardy (so-named for one of the member's keen ability to never quite be on time) actually originated in June of 2001 during a backyard party where two of its founding members (John Barton, drums, and Brett Kempema, lead vocals) were watching another local band perform. Both having been in bands before, the common statement throughout the night was, "We can do this." The idea became a reality soon after when the two, both of whom are teachers, picked up another teacher, Brian Staggs, to play guitar. The basic structure in place, the three played around with acoustic guitar driven songs. It wasn't until Staggs invited Jeff Winkle (lead guitar and keys) to a practice that the FMT sound was truly defined. Winkle played the opening riff to U2's "Where the Streets Have No Name", and the band immediately knew the direction in which they wanted to go. The only piece missing was a bass player, so the group searched the teacher ranks some more and found Dave Hundt who had much experience playing in other bands as well. Jam sessions turned into true practices which soon turned into performances. Starting relatively low-key, the band found themselves getting a rather faithful following and decided to increase their workload. They started working more clubs and pubs in the West Michigan area and played at several fundraiser events. Hundt decided to move on from the band as his job took him elsewhere, which led to the formation of the existing lineup. Needing a bass player, FMT found Sam Dertien to fill the void. In his initial practice, Dertien was spot-on with the bass line from the Barenaked Ladies "Brian Wilson". FMT had found its man. Most of the music played by the band is modern rock, although they also have an assortment of classic rock and alternative covers. Though some claim they could be a BNL tribute band due to their sound and personalities, FMT selects their music based on what they feel the crowd will get into. On any given night, in addition to U2 and BNL, the band will play covers of the Goo Goo Dolls, Weezer, the Foo Fighters, the Steve Miller Band, Green Day, and the Counting Crows. They might also include some Marvin Gaye or Elvis Costello. It all goes back to good sounds, good lyrics, and great fun. Five Minutes Tardy has also increased its library of original music as well. Winkle's smart and sometimes witty lyrics set to music have quickly become crowd favorites, and recording sessions are in the works. FMT continues to play the West Michigan scene and has also made appearances in northern Michigan and Ohio.
