Perth woman left $10,000 down after Global Plus Holidays collapse

A Perth woman has lost nearly $10,000 in the fall-out from a Northbridge-based travel agent, Global Plus Holidays, which has collapsed in July.

The company shut its offices abruptly in July, with angry customers left to learn their flights had never been booked, or were booked and then cancelled - with the agency allegedly pocketing the refund.

Elisabeth Poland says her mother, 76, has lost nearly $10,000 in the scam, after she booked flights to fly her to Greece for her wedding.

Ms Poland claims her ticket to attend the wedding was cancelled and $7,500 was stolen from her mother's credit card on July 24.

"I went online and I couldn't see my ticket anymore, because I'm an Emirates member and I was flying Emirates," she said.

"I rang myself and Emirates said 'the agency called and cancelled your ticket and we've refunded them the money'.

"I was heading to Greece to be a part of my mother's wedding party... I am devastated that this has happened and now it looks as though I won't be able to go."

Ms Poland said the collapsed agency was popular with Perth's eastern European community, with many caught up in the scam.

"There's one person I spoke to who is overseas at the moment with his wife and two young children and they can't get back [to Perth] because their flights have been cancelled also," she said.

Another Perth man, Zoran Jankulovski from Yokine, said he had also lost around $4,500 in the collapse after buying his parents-in-law wedding anniversary flights to Macedonia.

"They were supposed to fly out last Wednesday and two days before we received a letter on the front door saying the company's gone into receivership and we called Emirates, because the tickets were booked through Emirates, and they said 'no the tickets have been booked, but your tickets haven't been paid for'," he said.

"Last minute, I went back online and we purchased tickets again.

"Just a bit advice to people booking tickets like that, go to a reputable company, and when you pay for it, expect to get the ticket right there on the spot, don't wait on empty promises."

Consumer Protection estimates around 40 people have been affected by the closure, losing around $150,000.

Some of the people who have contacted the government agency are overseas and unsure whether their return tickets are now valid.
