The name Nida has been used for two tropical cyclones in the western north Pacific Ocean. The name was contributed by Thailand and means a name of woman.
Typhoon Nida, known in the Philippines as Typhoon Dindo, was the fourth tropical cyclone and second named storm of the 2004 Pacific typhoon season. Nida was the second super typhoon of the 2004 season, reaching a peak intensity of 160 miles per hour (260 km/h). Forming southeast of the Philippines, the storm strengthened as it moved northwest. The typhoon brushed the eastern Philippines causing heavy rains across the island archipelago. Nida later accelerated northeast, missing Japan to the east while becoming an extratropical cyclone. A total of $1.3 million (2004 USD) in damage occurred, and Nida left 31 fatalities.
On May 12, a persistent area of thunderstorms formed within a monsoon trough 220 miles (350 km) southwest of Palau. Satellite imagery revealed a weak low-level circulation. Initially, the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) forecast the storm to not strengthen. The following day, forecasters saw that the storm was strengthening and upgraded the system to tropical depression status. Forecasters at the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration designated the storm as Tropical Depression Dindo.
Typhoon Nida, known in the Philippines as Tropical Storm Vinta, was the most intense tropical cyclone in the Northwest Pacific Ocean during the 2000s, tied with Jangmi in 2008, tied with Rick of 2009 Pacific hurricane season in terms of one-minute maximum sustained winds.
Early on November 21 the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) reported that an area of convection had persisted within a monsoon trough about 880 km, (545 mi) to the southeast of Guam. At this time the system was moving around the subtropical ridge of pressure, with an anticyclone over the cyclone helping the convection to consolidate over a broad and elongated low level circulation center which was located in an area of minimal vertical wind shear. Later that morning a Tropical Cyclone Formation Alert was released as deep convection increased in organization with multiple bands of convection starting to wrap into the developing low level circulation center. The system was then declared as a tropical depression by the JMA later that day before the JTWC followed suit early the next day, who assigned the designation of 26W to the depression. During November 22, the depression remained weak, before during the next day both the JMA and the JTWC upgraded the depression to a tropical storm, with the JMA assigning the international number of 0922 and name of Nida as it started to move along a subtropical ridge.
