Iran (/aɪˈræn/ or i/ɪˈrɑːn/;Persian: Irān – ایران [ʔiːˈɾɒːn]), also known as Persia (/ˈpɜːrʒə/ or /ˈpɜːrʃə/), officially the Islamic Republic of Iran (جمهوری اسلامی ایران – Jomhuri ye Eslāmi ye Irān [d͡ʒomhuːˌɾije eslɒːˌmije ʔiːˈɾɒːn]), is a country in Western Asia. It is bordered to the northwest by Armenia, the de facto Nagorno-Karabakh, and Azerbaijan; with Kazakhstan and Russia across the Caspian Sea; to the northeast by Turkmenistan; to the east by Afghanistan and Pakistan; to the south by the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman; and to the west by Turkey and Iraq. Comprising a land area of 1,648,195 km2 (636,372 sq mi), it is the second-largest country in the Middle East and the 18th-largest in the world. With 78.4 million inhabitants, Iran is the world's 17th-most-populous country. It is the only country that has both a Caspian Sea and an Indian Ocean coastline. Iran has long been of geostrategic importance because of its central location in Eurasia and Western Asia, and its proximity to the Strait of Hormuz.
The long-running conflict between Saudi Arabia and Iran reached new heights this week after the kingdom severed diplomatic relations with Tehran. The diplomatic rupture, which has heightened tensions in the Middle East, came after Saudi executed 47 people on January 2, including a prominent Shia cleric - Nimr al-Nimr. Within hours of the death sentence being carried out, Iranian protesters ransacked the Saudi embassy in Tehran and started fires. Iranian media had depicted Nimr as a peaceful dissident, and the execution as a provocative act. In Saudi Arabia, the national security narrative prevailed - Nimr's execution was justified as part of its "war on terrorism". The coverage in both countries and the international media, has since played up a sectarian divide - one that pits Sunni ...

My name's Michael and I'm the Marketing Manager for Wild Frontiers. I'm here at the magnificent site of Persepolis in Iran. I've been in Iran for two weeks now and so far I've been enchanted by this fascinating country. CITIES The capital Tehran is most people's starting point, and in this busy city you can see ostentatious ornaments from the royal household in the crown jewels museum, and wander around the Shah's old residence, Golestan Palace. Just north of Tehran you can visit the Elburz Mountains for skiing in the winter or hiking in the summer. But the real highlights lie elsewhere. In the off-the-beaten-track city of Yazd you'll find a cityscape dotted with the ingenious wind tunnels -- which could be described as the world's first air-conditioning system - the ancient Zoroastria...
Travel video about destination Esfahan in Iran. With its historic centre, Esfahan is situated on the banks of the Zayandeh Rud River and is a gem of ancient Persia. In the centre of the historic city centre is the modest Pillar Halls Mosque which is thought to have been built above a fire temple. In around 1087, Seljuk vizier, Nizam Ol-Molk, had the pillar hall and its many small brick domes, completed. Due to a fire lit by the Assassins in 1121 A.D., the original mosque was destroyed. Following the death of Shah Abbas, around thirty thousand Christian Armenians settled in the Julfa district where they built the Savior Cathedral. Its interior features the history of the Christianisation of Armenia that is depicted on several illustrated panels created by the Holy Gregor. The grandeur of...

Tehran has been the capital of the Persian Empire since 1795. Founded by Mohammed Aga Khan it is a vibrant place that ranks among the most densely populated cities on Earth. Its biggest transformation in its recent history was due to religious leader, Ayatollah Khomeyni, who in 1979 established the Iranian Republic, a theocracy within the teachings of the Koran. The Saad-Abad Palace complex was the first summer residence of the Qadjarian kings. Following several extensions, from the 1920’s eighteen palaces were used by Reza Shah Pahlevi and his family. The city of Kashan prospered under the Safavid, Shah Abbas The First, who designed the Bagh...

Last week, Turkey overcame a failed attempted coup and has since seen massive political upheaval. As President Recep Tayyip Erdogan manages government institutions, with mass detentions, sackings and suspensions sweeping across the country, many question what effect the political instability will have on Turkey's economy. The Asia-Europe crossroad is hooked on foreign capital, but how will foreign investors feel about deals with a country that has seen countless bombings and ongoing political unrest? Travel and tourism revenues have already seen a decline as a result of the recent bombings, with the future of the industry at a real risk. This comes at a time where the country's current budget deficit - for example the difference between cost of imports and exports - sits at 4.5 percent ...

With 10 percent of the world’s petroleum resources in its possession, Iran is one of the world’s energy superpowers. Fossil fuel resources account for only part of the Islamic Republic’s vast potentials....

The historic nuclear agreement between the US and Iran was sealed a month ago - but since then, the media in both countries have become battlegrounds for fierce political debate. Both governments are trying sell the deal - a challenge to sway public opinion in the face of loud opposition from conservative hardliners from both countries. The US and Iran are home to skeptics, conservatives who argue the risks in the agreement outweigh the benefits. And there is also a PR push from an Israeli leader who has had plenty of airtime to state what his country has to lose from the detente. Talking us through the story is Reza Marashi, the research director at the National Iranian American Council; Barbara Slavin, a senior fellow at the Atlantic Council and Washington Correspondent for Al Monit...
