Ammassalik Island (Danish: Ammassalik Ø) is an island in the Sermersooq municipality in southeastern Greenland, with an area of 772 km2 (298.1 sq mi).
Separating Ammassalik Island from the mainland of Greenland are the wide Sermilik Fjord in the west and the Ikaasartivaq Strait in the northeast. To the east and southeast, the progressively wider southern half of the Ammassalik Fjord separates the island from the remainder of the eponymous Ammassalik Archipelago. Islands in the archipelago include Kulusuk Island, across the Torsuut Tunoq sound, and Apusiaajik Island, the largest. Ammassalik Island's southern coast borders the Irminger Sea, a marginal sea of the open North Atlantic. The town of Tasiilaq is located on the island's southeastern side. The highest point of the island is a glaciated peak in the northern part, at 1,352 m (4,435.7 ft).
The only permanently inhabited settlement on the island is Tasiilaq town on the south coast of the island, with 1,893 inhabitants as of 2009, the most populous community on the eastern coast, and the seventh-largest town in Greenland.
Tunu, originally Østgrønland ("East Greenland"), was one of the three counties (amt) of Greenland until 31 December 2008. The county seat was at the main settlement, Tasiilaq. Population in 2005 was around 3,800.
The county was made up of two former municipalities, Ammassalik Municipality and Illoqqortoormiut, while part of the Northeast Greenland National Park covered the northern half of the county.
It was bordered in the east by the Greenland Sea, Norwegian Sea, Denmark Strait and the North Atlantic Ocean. To the west lies Kitaa.

East Greenland is probably the most isolated part of this great country, and here old traditions are still very much upheld. In winter hunting and ice fishing are a part of the way of life and dog sledges are used to travel between locations. For visitors dog sledding is a great way to experience both the magnificent landscape and nature of this isolated area and to get a feel for the traditional arctic way of life. On this tour we will set out from Tasiilaq for a tour of the Ammassalik Island. We will see the Sermilik ice fjord, visit the small settlement of Tiniteqilaaq where we will dine with a local family. before turning back through the middle of the Ammassalik Island to Tasiilaq. There we have time to visit the town or to go on an (optional) snow shoe hike to the valley of flowers...

Ian Wright's journey to the Arctic takes him through the volcanic landscapes of Iceland and the frozen wilderness of Greenland. Beginning in Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland, Ian joins the crew of a replica Viking ship to learn about Iceland's history and Viking ancestors. He then sets out for a plane journey to Vatnajokul, but the unpredictable Icelandic weather proves a major obstacle and the plane is grounded. Traveling east, Ian hitches a lift to the natural wonders of Gulfoss, a 32 meter waterfall and Geysir, where boiling water is shot 20 meters in the air every 3 minutes. Next, Ian tastes the local delicacy - fermented shark. The shark is left in rock covered boxes for two months and then hanging for several more. As if this isn't enough, the shark is accompanied by Icelandic potat...
Heat waves, droughts and floods have been wreaking havoc across the globe in recent weeks, and now scientists say a 250 square kilometer island of ice has broken off from a glacier in Greenland. As, VOA's Carla Babb reports, some are blaming this huge chunk of ice on global warming, while others say such breaks in the Arctic ice are a normal occurrence.
Impressions from our trip with Borea Adventures (http://borea.is) through the Westfjords of Iceland in Juli 2014. It was six days trip from Monday to Saturday. We were eight guest and our guide. It was a marvelleous journey through a magical landscape. The organization, the logistics, the travel was perfect. We spotted whales, seals, arctix fox and other wildlife. Most of the kayaks were Perfection Essence 17. Some of the guests brought their very own Greenland style paddles, almost everybody had his/her own dry suit.

Originally I'd planned a trip to Ammassalik Island, East Greenland to do an 80km or so trail around the south west of the island along with a little more exploring to over 2 weeks on the island. However a few months before the trip I badly injured my back which was slow to recover, I lost fitness and so the originally planned trip was't an option. So this is a video of footage and pictures taken around the hills and waters near Tasiilaq, the main settlement of the area which I explored during my stay. The weather was dry and scorching hot (up to 29c) which I didn't expect, the midgies, mozzies and black fly were a pain, but it was a fantastic trip to a wonderful part of the world. I hope you enjoy this glimpse of Greenland an check out my blog www.moder-dye.blogspot.co.uk for more inf...
