Kangeq or Kangek (Kalaallisut: "Promontory") is a former settlement in the Sermersooq municipality in southwestern Greenland. It is located on the same island that formed the first Danish colony on Greenland between 1721 and 1728.
The more recent settlement was a traditional fishing village, before its abandonment in 1973.
As a coastal settlement, Kangeq was positioned on the migration route of the ancient Inuit peoples. Archeological finds from the Dorset culture era have been found near Kangeq. The Dorset people had vanished from the Nuuk region prior to 1000 CE.
Since the arrival of the Thule people who settled here permanently, Kangeq was a traditional Inuit coastal village, not dissimilar to Atammik and Napasoq in the north, just beyond the border with the Qeqqata municipality.
The island of Kangeq, dubbed Haabets Oe ("Island of Hope"), formed the site of Hans Egede's first settlement in Greenland after his landing on July 3, 1721. The settlement was relocated to the mainland by Major Claus Paarss in 1728.
Greenland (Greenlandic: Kalaallit Nunaat [kaˈlaːɬit ˈnunaːt]; Danish: Grønland [ˈɡ̊ʁɶnˌlanˀ]) is an autonomous country within the Danish Realm, located between the Arctic and Atlantic Oceans, east of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. Though physiographically a part of the continent of North America, Greenland has been politically and culturally associated with Europe (specifically Norway and Denmark, the colonial powers, as well as the nearby island of Iceland) for more than a millennium. In 2008, the people of Greenland passed a referendum supporting greater autonomy; 75% of votes cast were in favour. Greenland is the world's largest island, over three-quarters of which is covered by the only permanent ice sheet outside of Antarctica. With a population of about 56,480 (2013), it is the least densely populated country in the world.
Greenland has been inhabited off and on for at least the last 4,500 years by Arctic peoples whose forebears migrated there from what is now Canada.Norsemen settled the uninhabited southern part of Greenland beginning in the 10th century, and Inuit peoples arrived in the 13th century. The Norse colonies disappeared in the late 15th century. In the early 18th century, Scandinavia and Greenland came back into contact with each other, and Denmark-Norway affirmed sovereignty over the island.
Nuuk Airport (Greenlandic: Mittarfik Nuuk; Danish: Godthåb Lufthavn; (IATA: GOH, ICAO: BGGH)) is an airport in Nuuk, the capital of Greenland. The airport is a technical base and focus city for Air Greenland, the flag-carrier airline of Greenland, linking the capital with several towns in western and south-western part of the country, including the airline hub at Kangerlussuaq Airport. With connections to Iceland, Nuuk Airport is also one of 6 international airports in Greenland but serves only destination within Greenland and Iceland. International connections are made with flights to either Keflavík International Airport in Iceland or Kangerlussuaq Airport.
In the early 1960s, water planes of the newly established Air Greenland landed in Nuuk Port. In 1965, the airline invested in developing a more robust fleet based on the large Sikorsky S-61 helicopter, which continued to serve the town for the next four decades, even after the construction of an airport in Nuuk capable of serving the short takeoff and landing de Havilland Canada Dash-7 aircraft, which dominated at the airport since the 1970s.
Greenland is struggling to drop a title that no country wants. It has the highest suicide rate in the world - with one in four people attempting to take his or her own life. In the final part of our special series from the Danish territory, Al Jazeera's Nazanine Moshiri has the story from the capital, Nuuk.

Crystal memories
Touched by your voice, in the moonlight
"Nothing lasts." you said.
But everything still holds meaning in my heart
Hidden deep in my mind
River to the time
That we once shared together-
the pictures are still on the wall and why.
shining smiles, like snow flakes.
all melted and gone away
Only answer was to live.
and I am still here-
with your memories...
dreaming hopelessly.
holding in my heart
all the flowers you left...
Crystallized moments
Shattered into frozen pieces in my tears
River of moonlight
I hear your voice echoing.
but I'm here, alone...
Crystal melodies
moments so sweet, I remember
"Nothing lasts." you said.
Then why is pain still confusing memories
Only time will go on
River has its end
Our light was blown by the wind
My fingers reach out and find no one there
Rainy sky, please tell me my emptiness will be filled
Only answer was to live.
and I am still here-
with your memories...
walking hopelessly.
holding in my eyes
all the colors you left..
broken melodies
No more singing, no more laughing in the sun
River of moonshine
I hear your voice echoing
