In 1774 Joseph Priestley, a Presbyterian minister and chemist, identified a gas that was later named oxygen; in 1798 Nelson defeated the French at the Battle of the Nile; in 1831 a new London Bridge, since replaced, opened to traffic; in 1834 the British Empire began gradually to abolish slavery; in 1914 Germany declared war on Russia; in 1944 the Warsaw Rising began.
Nature notes
There is a new moth to look out for in gardens in southern England and especially around London. This is the jersey tiger moth, which is one of the relatively few day-flying moths. Sitting on a flower with its upper wings spread out, it is quite eye-catching, since it is black with creamy diagonal stripes. However, it is even more remarkable when it parts its upper wings, for then its brilliant orange, black-spotted lower wings flash out. In this way it startles birds that are tempted to eat it. It was once found only in the Channel Islands and on the Devon coast. However, in the past few years it has become much more common and is probably spreading still further north. Meanwhile the very similar garden tiger, a nocturnal moth that occasionally appears by day, has become much rarer. It has marbled, rather than striped, upper wings. Its hairy orange caterpillars are the so-called woolly bears that walk along garden paths.
