Graham Holdings Company (formerly The Washington Post Company) is a diversified American conglomerate, best known for formerly owning the newspaper for which it was once named, The Washington Post, and Newsweek.
Its holdings include the online magazine Slate, Graham Media Group (formerly Post-Newsweek Stations), a group of five large-market television stations, higher education company Kaplan, and Trove (formerly WaPo Labs)—the developers of a news reader app. Graham Holdings Company also owned cable television and internet service provider Cable One until it was spun off in 2015.
Corporate history
The history of Graham Holdings Company dates back to 1877, when the Post was first published. The Washington Post Company was incorporated in the District of Columbia in 1889, and remained a District of Columbia corporation until it changed its place of incorporation to Delaware in 2003. It is a public company and its Class B common stock trades on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol GHC; it went public in 1971.

Egyptian tour guides held a mass protest on Sunday at what they say is a lack of security for foreign tourists. About 150 guides gathered outside Cairo's Egyptian Museum, chanting and holding up banners. A spokeswoman for the guides, Gladys Haddad, says 40 attacks against guides were recorded over the last year, including harassment of women. At a press conference at Orlando’s Orange County Convention Center, NYC & Company president and CEO Fred Dixon and Senior Vice President of Global Communications Chris Heywood were accompanied by representatives of the One World Observatory, which was unveiled in Lower Manhattan (29th May 2015); the Whitney Museum of American Art, opened on 1st May 2015 in Manhattan’s Meatpacking District; and the New York Wheel and Empire Outlets, debuting 2016-17 in St. George, Staten Island.
In addition, NYC & Company announced its first-ever bilingual family tourism campaign starring Dora as the City’s newest Official NYC Family Ambassador. In 2014, the City welcomed an estimated 17.2 million family visitors, a 3 percent increase from the year before. Starting on 2nd June 2015 nycgo.com/family, Dora will encourage family travel with kid-friendly NYC travel materials, guides and itineraries in both English and Spanish.
NYC & Company also rolled out its latest NYCGO Insider Guide, featuring Brooklyn’s Coney Island, the perfect summer travel destination. Directly following the press conference, NYC & Company hosted its fourth consecutive IPW Luncheon, NYC Center Stage, in conjunction with Broadway Inbound. Let's turn to India now. You're betting on the consumer there, but you know this comes as, just as economic growth slows out there and also there are concerns that the Fed tapering, they could really sink emerging market stocks, so why the consumer?
DAVID NADEL, PORTFOLIO MANAGER, ROYCE & ASSOCIATES, (ENGLISH) SAYING:
So the consumer story I think in India trumps a lot of these macro concerns. Certainly growth has slowed. It's going to come closer to 4% or 5% this year. India's used to 9% or 10% growth. China slowed a little bit too. And suddenly people have been running towards you know global MNCs or hiding in ETFs or just abandoning emerging markets altogether. Emerging markets, the BRIC countries have underperformed global markets for three straight years. So a lot of this I think is baked in. The consumer story though is unique. India has the fastest growing middle class anywhere of the four BRIC countries. And in eight years there will be more people in India than in the US or in the Eurozone who have $10,000 of disposable income. And in the case of India relative to China, the development of the middle class has been much more even. A lot of rural or countryside participation in this wealth, so rural wages have been advanced to get 15% a year and land values have skyrocketed, so suddenly all this disposable income.

So not as much inequality then as China. But if few Indians travel abroad, why then bet on Thomas Cook India?

Egyptian tour guides held a mass protest on Sunday at what they say is a lack of security for foreign tourists.
About 150 guides gathered outside Cairo's Egyptian Museum, chanting and holding up banners.
A spokeswoman for the guides, Gladys Haddad, says 40 attacks against guides were recorded over the last year, including harassment of women.
The guides claim they are attacked by souvenir vendors and unlicensed competitors fighting for turf at famed sites like the Valley of the Kings tombs in Luxor or Cairo's medieval citadel.
"I was attacked, I have rights and all those tour guides who are here, are coming here for the right of every single tour guide who was assaulted or who may be assaulted one day," said tour guide, Dina Yaacoub.
She appealed directly to Egyptian police, saying, "We are here just for one single thing - we want police of tourism security to come back on (the) ground, active, active not just in your office."
Tourism, a top foreign currency earner, has suffered from the turmoil following the 2011 uprising that forced President Hosni Mubarak to step down.
"I would like to tell those in the government and from the different Islamic groups who say that they do not want tourists to drink (alcohol) in Egypt that this is an industry of hospitality," said another guide, Raji Banna.
"If we do not have the tools for hospitality we should shut the tourism industry in Egypt and tell the (tourists) to go visit Israel, let Israelis receive the money that Egypt should have gained (from tourism), let them take the money and use it to strengthen their economy while ours gets weaker, " Banna added.
Income from tourism has been a major source of income for Egypt for many years, accounting for as much as 10 percent of gross domestic product.
Last year (2011), revenues fell by almost a third due to the ongoing protests and sporadic violence associated with them as the army and police attempt to restore order.

A poll conducted by Vince Schilling (of the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe) through his own Twitter account show results that completely reverse the findings. This is a commentary provided by Michael Kickingbear which is a follow up regarding the recent article published by the Washington Post, and it's assertion that 9-10 Native Americans do not find the name of the Washington "R" NFL team offensive. The Poll regarding the Washington Team is in itself flawed. 45 percent of the respondents the Post states are "Enrolled" with native American tribes. But they do not state which tribes they are. The REMAINING 55 percent are what they called "Self-Identified as Native American". Well, that can be any non-native that "thinks" they are native American but aren't sure.... 3.) Donald Trump, posing with a golden shovel marked with his brand name, broke ground last week on what will be a new addition to his hotel chain: renovation of the hulking Old Post Office building in Washington, D.C.
The company promises elegance and luxury in the $200-million redo of the 1899 building at Pennsylvania Avenue and 12th Street Northwest. It will be called Trump International Hotel, Washington, D.C.
The Old Post Office Tower, a landmark operated by the National Park Service, includes an observation deck where visitors can take in some of the best views of the Capitol. It will be closed until 2016 when the hotel is expected to open.
Trump and his businesswoman daughter Ivanka last Wednesday posed for photos in announcing the hotel that will bring 270 rooms and suites to the Romanesque Revival building, which takes up a city block. Trump doesn't own the building; the General Services Administration awarded him a 60-year lease.
The new hotel will transform the postmaster general's former offices into three-bedroom presidential suites, ranging from 3,500 to 5,000 square feet, a hotel announcement says. Each will have a master bedroom, dining room with fireplace, pantry-kitchen and a shower and steam room.

Guest rooms will measure 600 square feet with high ceilings and historic touches kept intact. There also are plans for a 13,000-square-foot grand ballroom as well as a spa, fitness center and restaurants.
"Our commitment to historic preservation and long history of redeveloping landmark properties is reflected in our design approach, which is inspired by the legacy of this great structure and executed in a manner that captures the sophistication and luxury of our brand," Ivanka Trump said in a statement.
