The United States Senate career of Barack Obama began on January 4, 2005 and ended on November 16, 2008. He resigned his seat in the Illinois Senate to serve and would resign upon being elected President of the United States. Obama won the seat in an election against Alan Keyes who replaced Republican Primary election winner Jack Ryan. Prior to his election but after Ryan withdrew from the race, he rose to national prominence by delivering the 2004 Democratic National Convention keynote address. Upon his election, he became the fifth African American Senator in U.S. history, the third to have been popularly elected.
As a Senator, he served on a variety of committees and chaired the United States Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on European Affairs. His bill sponsorship and voting records indicates that he was a loyalist to the Democratic Party. He was considered to be among the most liberal by various analyses. In his first session, he was involved in immigration reform. Legislation bearing his name was passed for armament reduction and federal transparency as well as relief aid. In the first year of the 110th Congress, he worked on lobbying and campaign finance reform, election reform, climate control and troop reduction. In the second year, he legislated for oversight of certain military discharges, Iran divestment and nuclear terrorism reduction, but President George W. Bush vetoed his legislation for State Children's Health Insurance Program-related military family job protections.

Barack Obama, born Barack Hussein Obama on August 4, 1961, is the son of the Kenyan senior governmental economist Barack Obama Sr and Stanley Ann Dunham. He is the current President of the United States and is best known to be the first African American to hold the US office. Married to the gorgeous Michelle Obama, he is highly appreciated by the world for his marvelous job and holds a title of being the most powerful man on Earth. His journey from a simple community organizer to becoming the world's most powerful and respectable will leave you amazed.
Obama completed his graduation from the Columbia University and Harvard Law School. The leadership quality flowed in his blood since a very young age due to his experiences of being a civil rights attorney, professor of constitutional law at the University of Chicago Law School and a member of the 13th District in the Illinois Senate, to name a few. 2004 marked a great success in the President's political career with him receiving immense national attention while campaigning for the United States Senate. Barack Obama's presence as the President of the United States of America brought about an array of revolution in various fields. The end of America's Great Recession along with the birth of the 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, Unemployment Insurance Reauthorization as well as the Job Creation Act of 2010 were a great relief to the citizens. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, also called "Obamacare", the Don't Ask, Don't Tell Repeal Act of 2010 and the Dodd–Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act are the other initiatives taken in the domestic level by the President.

STORYLINE:
A United States Senator, Barack Obama visited Soweto in Johannesburg, South Africa on Wednesday as part of his African tour.
The Illinois Senator Barrack Obama paid tribute to the South Africans fight for freedom, saying they taught lessons to the world and helped inspire his own political career.
"So if it wasn't for some of the activities that happened here, I might not have been involved in politics and might not be doing what I am doing today in the United States," he added
He was accompanied around a museum by the sister of Hector Pietersen, the first schoolchild to be killed by police in the 1976 uprising in South Africa.
He was shown the history of the apartheid movement by videos and photographs.
Obama later toured an upholstery factory in the Soweto Industry area which was sponsored by United States Aid for International Development.
The Senator's African connection comes from his late father Doctor Barrack Obama ,a Kenyan economist who hailed from Kogello in the Siaya District.

Senator Barack Obama officially announced his bid for the presidency, portraying himself as a fresh face capable of leading a new generation.
He is the youngest contender among his fellow Democrats and would be the first black US president if elected.
"I stand before you today to announce my candidacy for President of the United States of America," he told thousands shivering in the cold at the campaign's kickoff on Saturday.
The 45-year-old is relatively new to national politics, but is already considered one of the top challengers in his party to front-runner Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton in the 2008 election.
The first-term US senator from Illinois sought to distinguish himself as a staunch opponent of the Iraq war and a White House hopeful whose lack of political experience is an asset.
"I know I haven't spent a lot of time learning the ways of Washington. But I've been there long enough to know that the ways of Washington must change," Obama said to some of the loudest applause of his 20-minute speech.
Obama is looking to cap his remarkable, rapid rise to prominence with the biggest political prize of all - the presidency.
His selective career began just 10 years ago in the Illinois Legislature.
He lost a bid for a US House seat, then won the Senate seat in 2004, a relatively smooth election made easier by Republican stumbles.
In his speech, Obama did not mention his roots as the son of a black man from Kenya and a white woman from Kansas, his childhood in Hawaii and Indonesia or the history he would make if elected.
That compelling biography has turned him into a political celebrity.
Instead, he focused on his life in Illinois over the past two decades, beginning with a job as a community organiser.
He said the struggles he saw people face inspired him to get a law degree and run for the Legislature, where he served eight years.
On Saturday, Obama chose to announce his bid at the building where Lincoln served as a state lawmaker.

STORYLINE
Illinois Democratic Senator and Presidential hopeful, Barack Obama, told a US Senate Committee in New Orleans on Monday that President Bush's failure to mention the Katrina disaster during his State of the Union address contributed to questions about whether the government was committed to helping the battered city rebuild.
"The president came down and he said, we will do what it takes, we will stay as long as it takes to help citizens rebuild their communities and their lives," Obama said.
"Seventeen months later we heard not a single word, not one single word, in the president's State of the Union address about New Orleans."
New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin said he doesn't see the will to fix his hurricane-battered city when compared with the billions (b) of US dollars spent on the war in Iraq, and he suggested racism was part of the explanation.
"Katrina exposed an ugly underbelly of our country that most people were shocked to see around the world and I think it is more class than anything but there are racial issues associated with it also," Nagin said.
Seventeen months after Hurricane Katrina struck, Nagin also asked for Congress to change the laws and regulations to speed up the flow of federal aid.
As of 18 January, the US Federal Emergency Management Agency had agreed to pay 334 million (m) US dollars for infrastructure repairs in New Orleans, but the state of Louisiana has only forwarded 145 million (m) US dollars to the city so far.
Nagin said that not getting the necessary financial resources at a local level was making near impossible for New Orleans to recover.
State officials have said city leaders failed to provide required documentation, which Nagin called cumbersome.
Nagin's testimony comes nearly a week after US President George W. Bush drew criticism for failing to mention recovery efforts along the Gulf Coast in his State of the Union speech.
But he added it would take a "long time to finish the job."
He was escorted out of the room by security officials.

Illinois
Illinois (i/ˌɪlᵻˈnɔɪ/ IL-i-NOY) is a state in the midwestern region of the United States. It is the 5th most populous state and 25th largest state in terms of land area, and is often noted as a microcosm of the entire country. With Chicago in the northeast, small industrial cities and great agricultural productivity in central and northern Illinois, and natural resources like coal, timber, and petroleum in the south, Illinois has a diverse economic base and is a major transportation hub. Although today the state's largest population center is around Chicago in the northern part of the state, the state's European population grew first in the west, with French Canadians who settled along the Mississippi River, and gave the area the name, Illinois. After the American Revolutionary War established the United States, American settlers began arriving from Kentucky in the 1810s via the Ohio River, and the population grew from south to north. In 1818, Illinois achieved statehood. After construction of the Erie Canal increased traffic and trade through the Great Lakes, Chicago was founded in the 1830s on the banks of the Chicago River, at one of the few natural harbors on southern Lake Michigan.John Deere's invention of the self-scouring steel plow turned Illinois' rich prairie into some of the world's most productive and valuable farmlands, attracting immigrant farmers from Germany and Sweden. Railroads carried immigrants to new homes, as well as being used to ship their commodity crops out to markets.

Seventeen months after Hurricane Katrina struck, Nagin also asked for Congress to change the laws and regulations to speed up the flow of federal aid. As of 18 January, the US Federal Emergency Management Agency had agreed to pay 334 million (m) US dollars for infrastructure repairs in New Orleans, but the state of Louisiana has only forwarded 145 million (m) US dollars to the city so far. Nagin said that not getting the necessary financial resources at a local level was making near impossible for New Orleans to recover. State officials have said city leaders failed to provide required documentation, which Nagin called cumbersome. Nagin's testimony comes nearly a week after US President George W. Bush drew criticism for failing to mention recovery efforts along the Gulf Coast in his State of the Union speech. But he added it would take a "long time to finish the job." He served three terms representing the 13th District in the Illinois Senate from 1997 to 2004, running unsuccessfully for the United States House of Representatives in 2000. In 2004, Obama received national attention during his campaign to represent Illinois in the United States Senate with his victory in the March Democratic Party primary, his keynote address at the Democratic National Convention in July, and his election to the Senate in November. He began his presidential campaign in 2007 and, after a close primary campaign against Hillary Rodham Clinton in 2008, he won sufficient delegates in the Democratic Party primaries to receive the presidential nomination. He then defeated Republican nominee John McCain in the general election, and was inaugurated as president on January 20, 2009. Nine months after his inauguration, Obama was named the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize laureate. During his first two years in office, Obama signed into law economic stimulus legislation in response to the Great Recession in the form of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 and the Tax Relief, Unemployment Insurance Reauthorization, and Job Creation Act of 2010. He resigned his seat in the Illinois Senate to serve and would resign upon being elected President of the United States. He resigned his seat in the Illinois Senate to serve and would resign upon being elected President of the United States. A United States Senator, Barack Obama visited Soweto in Johannesburg, South Africa on Wednesday as part of his African tour.
The Illinois Senator Barrack Obama paid tribute to the South Africans fight for freedom, saying they taught lessons to the world and helped inspire his own political career.
"So if it wasn't for some of the activities that happened here, I might not have been involved in politics and might not be doing what I am doing today in the United States," he added
He was accompanied around a museum by the sister of Hector Pietersen, the first schoolchild to be killed by police in the 1976 uprising in South Africa.
He was shown the history of the apartheid movement by videos and photographs.
Obama later toured an upholstery factory in the Soweto Industry area which was sponsored by United States Aid for International Development.
The Senator's African connection comes from his late father Doctor Barrack Obama ,a Kenyan economist who hailed from Kogello in the Siaya District.

Senator Barack Obama officially announced his bid for the presidency, portraying himself as a fresh face capable of leading a new generation.
He is the youngest contender among his fellow Democrats and would be the first black US president if elected.
"I stand before you today to announce my candidacy for President of the United States of America," he told thousands shivering in the cold at the campaign's kickoff on Saturday.
The 45-year-old is relatively new to national politics, but is already considered one of the top challengers in his party to front-runner Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton in the 2008 election.
The first-term US senator from Illinois sought to distinguish himself as a staunch opponent of the Iraq war and a White House hopeful whose lack of political experience is an asset.
"I know I haven't spent a lot of time learning the ways of Washington. But I've been there long enough to know that the ways of Washington must change," Obama said to some of the loudest applause of his 20-minute speech.
Obama is looking to cap his remarkable, rapid rise to prominence with the biggest political prize of all - the presidency.
His selective career began just 10 years ago in the Illinois Legislature.
He lost a bid for a US House seat, then won the Senate seat in 2004, a relatively smooth election made easier by Republican stumbles.
In his speech, Obama did not mention his roots as the son of a black man from Kenya and a white woman from Kansas, his childhood in Hawaii and Indonesia or the history he would make if elected.
That compelling biography has turned him into a political celebrity.
Instead, he focused on his life in Illinois over the past two decades, beginning with a job as a community organiser.
He said the struggles he saw people face inspired him to get a law degree and run for the Legislature, where he served eight years.
On Saturday, Obama chose to announce his bid at the building where Lincoln served as a state lawmaker.

Illinois Democratic Senator and Presidential hopeful, Barack Obama, told a US Senate Committee in New Orleans on Monday that President Bush's failure to mention the Katrina disaster during his State of the Union address contributed to questions about whether the government was committed to helping the battered city rebuild.
"The president came down and he said, we will do what it takes, we will stay as long as it takes to help citizens rebuild their communities and their lives," Obama said.
"Seventeen months later we heard not a single word, not one single word, in the president's State of the Union address about New Orleans."
New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin said he doesn't see the will to fix his hurricane-battered city when compared with the billions (b) of US dollars spent on the war in Iraq, and he suggested racism was part of the explanation.
"Katrina exposed an ugly underbelly of our country that most people were shocked to see around the world and I think it is more class than anything but there are racial issues associated with it also," Nagin said.
Seventeen months after Hurricane Katrina struck, Nagin also asked for Congress to change the laws and regulations to speed up the flow of federal aid.
As of 18 January, the US Federal Emergency Management Agency had agreed to pay 334 million (m) US dollars for infrastructure repairs in New Orleans, but the state of Louisiana has only forwarded 145 million (m) US dollars to the city so far.
Nagin said that not getting the necessary financial resources at a local level was making near impossible for New Orleans to recover.
State officials have said city leaders failed to provide required documentation, which Nagin called cumbersome.
Nagin's testimony comes nearly a week after US President George W. Bush drew criticism for failing to mention recovery efforts along the Gulf Coast in his State of the Union speech.
But he added it would take a "long time to finish the job."
He was escorted out of the room by security officials.
