The name, Lower East Side, pretty much tells you that this neighborhood is located in the south-eastern part of Manhattan. It's roughly located between Houston Street to the north, the East River on the east, Canal Street to the south, and Bowery to the west.
Keep in mind that the boundaries of this neighborhood are not exactly defined because this area is in constant change and renewal and often it's hard to tell exactly where the Lower East side ends and where the adjacent neighborhoods start.
Brief History
The Lower East Side, also called L.E.S. by the locals, is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Manhattan. During the second half of the nineteenth century it was predominantly occupied by working class immigrants who arrived in New York and settled here in the many tenement buildings. It is a culturally diverse area formed by many different ethnic groups of the world who have been immigrating to New York over the centuries.
Tenement Museum:
Located on Orchard Street, the Tenement Museum is a 5-story tenement building where thousands of immigrants from 20 different nations lived between the mid-1800 to the early 1900s.
You can take a daily tour offered by the Tenement Museum to see how the immigrants lived. Tenement buildings were specifically built by greedy owners to house as many immigrants as possible. Immigrants often lived in crowded and squalid conditions. In tenements, families were stuffed in to small rooms, with no heat, no running water and no bathrooms.
Katz's Delicatessen:
In the early 1900s, the Lower East Side had a large population of Jewish immigrants who maintained their culture and heritage through the years.
Katz's Delicatessen is one of the oldest food establishments in the Lower East Side. It has been here since 1888 and it features its famous pastrami sandwich and many other kosher foods and cold cuts.
It has also appeared in several movies, like "When Harry Met Sally", "Donnie Brasco" and "Across the Universe".
Synagogues
As you walk around the Lower East Side you will notice various Synagogues on almost every street. They are a vivid sign of the Jewish heritage of the Lower East Side. Most of the synagogues have been declared landmarks since 1996.
The Bialystoker Synagogue was founded in 1865 by a group of orthodox Jews who came from the town of Bialystok, Poland.
The Angel Orensanz Center at 172 Norfolk Street is one of the largest and oldest synagogues built in New York City.
The Eldrige Street Synagogue was erected in 1887

Through interviews with a broad spectrum of Lower East residents, this documentary commissioned by Two Bridges Neighborhood Council explores the impact of gentrification on their lives.
As real estate prices have increased, many long-term residents have been displaced and a number of well-known family businesses have shut their doors. Landlords have used both legal and illegal means to evict residential and commercial tenants. Meanwhile, conditions have improved in the community. Crime is down and city services have improved.
The filmmakers interviewed long-term residents and new arrivals, people on all sides of the complex and controversial issue of gentrification. The film is intended to spark a dialogue — and eventually a campaign — to preserve the diversity, vitality, and unique culture of the Lower East Side.

The Lower East Side, sometimes abbreviated as LES, is a neighborhood in the southeastern part of the New York City borough of Manhattan, roughly located between the Bowery and the East River, and Canal Street and Houston Street.
It is one of the oldest neighborhoods of New-York city which has long been a lower-class worker neighborhood and often a poor and ethnically diverse section of New York. As well as Irish, Italians, Poles, Ukrainians, and other ethnic groups, it once had a sizeable German population and was known as Little Germany (Kleindeutschland).
And remembered especially as a place of Jewish beginnings too in contemporary, impoverished Ashkenazi American Jewish culture.

Lower East Side
The Lower East Side, sometimes abbreviated as LES, is a neighborhood in the southeastern part of the New York City borough of Manhattan, roughly located between the Bowery and the East River, and Canal Street and Houston Street. Traditionally an immigrant, working-class neighborhood, it began rapid gentrification in the mid-2000s, prompting The National Trust for Historic Preservation to place the neighborhood on their list of America's Most Endangered Places.
Boundaries
The Lower East Side is roughly bounded by the Bowery to the west, East Houston Street to the north, the F.D.R. Drive to the east and Canal Street to the south. The western boundary below Grand Street veers east off of the Bowery to approximately Essex Street.
The neighborhood is bordered in the south and west by Chinatown – which extends north to roughly Grand Street, in the west by NoLIta and in the north by East Village.
Historically, the "Lower East Side" referred to the area alongside the East River from about the Manhattan Bridge and Canal Street up to 14th Street, and roughly bounded on the west by Broadway. It included areas known today as East Village, Alphabet City, Chinatown, Bowery, Little Italy, and NoLIta. Parts of the East Village are still known as Loisaida, a Latino pronunciation of "Lower East Side." Avenue C is known directly as "Loisaida" and is home to the Loisaida Festival every summer.

Side
Side (Greek: Σίδη) is an ancient Greek city on the southern Mediterranean coast of Turkey, a resort town and one of the best-known classical sites in the country. It lies near Manavgat and the village of Selimiye, 78 km from Antalya in the province of Antalya.
It is located on the eastern part of the Pamphylian coast, which lies about 20 km east of the mouth of the Eurymedon River. Today, as in antiquity, the ancient city is situated on a small north-south peninsula about 1 km long and 400 m across.
History
Strabo and Arrian both record that Side was founded by Greek settlers from Cyme in Aeolis, a region of western Anatolia. This most likely occurred in the 7th century BC. Its tutelary deity was Athena, whose head adorned its coinage.
Dating from the tenth century B.C., its coinage bore the head of Athena (Minerva), the patroness of the city, with a legend. Its people, a piratical horde, quickly forgot their own language to adopt that of the aborigines.
Possessing a good harbour for small-craft boats, Side's natural geography made it one of the most important places in Pamphylia and one of the most important trade centres in the region. According to Arrian, when settlers from Cyme came to Side, they could not understand the dialect. After a short while, the influence of this indigenous tongue was so great that the newcomers forgot their native Greek and started using the language of Side. Excavations have revealed several inscriptions written in this language. The inscriptions, dating from the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC, remain undeciphered, but testify that the local language was still in use several centuries after colonisation. Another object found in the excavations at Side, a basalt column base from the 7th century BC and attributable to the Neo-Hittites, provides further evidence of the site's early history. The name Side may be Anatolian in origin, meaning pomegranate.

As real estate prices have increased, many long-term residents have been displaced and a number of well-known family businesses have shut their doors. Landlords have used both legal and illegal means to evict residential and commercial tenants. Meanwhile, conditions have improved in the community. Crime is down and city services have improved. The Lower East Side, sometimes abbreviated as LES, is a neighborhood in the southeastern part of the New York City borough of Manhattan, roughly located between the Bowery and the East River, and Canal Street and Houston Street. The name, Lower East Side, pretty much tells you that this neighborhood is located in the south-eastern part of Manhattan. It's roughly located between Houston Street to the north, the East River on the east, Canal Street to the south, and Bowery to the west.
Keep in mind that the boundaries of this neighborhood are not exactly defined because this area is in constant change and renewal and often it's hard to tell exactly where the Lower East side ends and where the adjacent neighborhoods start.
Brief History
The Lower East Side, also called L.E.S. by the locals, is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Manhattan. During the second half of the nineteenth century it was predominantly occupied by working class immigrants who arrived in New York and settled here in the many tenement buildings. It is a culturally diverse area formed by many different ethnic groups of the world who have been immigrating to New York over the centuries.
Tenement Museum:
Located on Orchard Street, the Tenement Museum is a 5-story tenement building where thousands of immigrants from 20 different nations lived between the mid-1800 to the early 1900s.
You can take a daily tour offered by the Tenement Museum to see how the immigrants lived. Tenement buildings were specifically built by greedy owners to house as many immigrants as possible. Immigrants often lived in crowded and squalid conditions. In tenements, families were stuffed in to small rooms, with no heat, no running water and no bathrooms.
Katz's Delicatessen:
In the early 1900s, the Lower East Side had a large population of Jewish immigrants who maintained their culture and heritage through the years.
Katz's Delicatessen is one of the oldest food establishments in the Lower East Side. It has been here since 1888 and it features its famous pastrami sandwich and many other kosher foods and cold cuts.
It has also appeared in several movies, like "When Harry Met Sally", "Donnie Brasco" and "Across the Universe".
Synagogues
As you walk around the Lower East Side you will notice various Synagogues on almost every street. They are a vivid sign of the Jewish heritage of the Lower East Side. Most of the synagogues have been declared landmarks since 1996.
The Bialystoker Synagogue was founded in 1865 by a group of orthodox Jews who came from the town of Bialystok, Poland.
The Angel Orensanz Center at 172 Norfolk Street is one of the largest and oldest synagogues built in New York City.
The Eldrige Street Synagogue was erected in 1887

Patricia Field is a NYC fashion fixture! Made famous for her costume designing in The Devil Wears Prada and Sex and the City: the Movie and sequel, her boutique is another MUST. I love playing dressup here and splurging on accessories!

Need to get around? Rent a bike! I have yet to try this but it seems fabulous! Save your feet and cover more ground. These bikes and bike spots are all over the city. A perfect way to burn calories and see more of the city faster.

Summer in NYC isn't really summer until you get your butt on a rooftop. My pick was Jimmy Rooftop. Sunday's after 3pm are bomb! Amazing music courtesy of DJ Cato. I believe it is doorman discretion, which means, dress your best and don't travel with a bunch of dudes. You get an amazing view of the sun setting over the Hudson River and you get to splash around in the pool if you so choose. I chose this spot because I used to work here and loved it!

Yes! Go to Church! After you party it up Saturday night or Sunday afternoon bring your sinful behind to this awesome church! You don't have to be religious to attend. This is a non-denominal church and people from all over the world come here for the amazing sermons and not to mention the interior. This Church is a converted theatre and a must see. Now go and pray!

James Kalm straddles his trusty bike and brings viewers along for a whirlwind kick off tour to welcome in the new year 2016. Starting on the burgeoning Lower East Side, we'll visit the Hionas Gallery and Dennis Hollingsworth's "Paint Sculpturally/ Sculpt Painterly". This show presents works that seem to veer from the 2D to the 3D and back. Dennis makes an appearance and talks about his move from Los Angeles. Then it's on to Williamsburg and the last hurrah for Pierogi in their historic North 9th Street location. John Milisenda has taught basic photography, the Zone System and Photographic Chemistry at Drexel University, the New School For Social Research and Parsons School of Design. He has written for Modern Photography and Photo Methods magazine.
Milisenda made the images in this lecture when he was a teenager, before he attended Pratt Institute to study art. Many of the subjects in these photographs are teenagers with whom he grew up. These photographs have appeared on photo blogs and websites worldwide. His images are in both museums and private collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, the New Orleans Museum of Modern Art, and Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris. He has self-published 17 books of his photography.
