Live at Roberto's TRI Studios - Slightly Stoopid was performed live on September 13, 2011. It was an honor being invited by the Grateful Dead and Furthur's Bob Weir into his state of the art TRI Studios. Built by our friends at Meyer Sound Labs, and utilizing the technology of their new Constellation sound system, Slightly Stoopid had the privilege to invite some of their close friends and family down to "Roberto's" TRI clubhouse for an unprecedented live webcast and in-studio performance.
Our good friend Tommy Chong came down and hosted the event and provided some "Wisdom". Our extended family of musical guests joining us and playing on the session, features Karl Denson, Ivan and Ian Neville of Dumpstaphunk, Don Carlos, and Bob Weir himself!
The result is a 31 song / 2 set acoustic and electric performance including behind the scenes rehearsal footage, and a rare interview segment moderated by Tommy Chong.
Last but not least, a portion of all proceeds will benefit 2 charitable organizations whom the band supports: Save the Children and World Food Programme

While it’s a rare commodity for a band to tour as consistently as Slightly Stoopid, the group’s diligent commitment to live music provides some insight into their loyal fan base and unique creative metamorphosis throughout their 17-year existence. Though it’s been a couple of years since the release of their last studio album, Top Of The World (August 14, 2012), the Ocean Beach, California-based group—led by co-founders and multi-instrumentalists Kyle McDonald and Miles
Doughty—have also found the same passionate dedication to their studio craft, holing up between tours in their own San Diego recording studio and record label complex. The balance of a prolific touring regimen between albums have helped to refine the tasty fusion and massive groove that permeates Stoopid’s trademark sound and seven album catalogue, as well as their live shows.
“We’re a touring act, and we’ve been on the road pretty much non-stop over the last decade,” explains Doughty, offering that the more recent creation of the band’s own local recording studio and rehearsal clubhouse (within the warehouse district of Mission Valley just inland of Ocean Beach) certainly aided and influenced their last release Top of the World, and has inspired their latest sessions, which the band anticipates could stretch into a few different recording projects.

Slightly Stoopid is an American band based in Ocean Beach, San Diego, California, who describe their music as "a fusion of acoustic rock and blues with reggae, hip-hop, and punk". As a band, they have released eight albums (two live) with their sixth studio album, entitled Slightly Not Stoned Enough To Eat Breakfast Yet Stoopid, released on July 22, 2008. The band was originally signed by Bradley Nowell from the band Sublime to his label Skunk Records while still in high school.
Slightly Stoopid was formed in 1995 in Ocean Beach, California by childhood friends Miles Doughty and Kyle McDonald. Soon after, Sublime frontman Bradley Nowell discovered the duo and asked them to perform a set at the Foot Hill Tavern in Long Beach, California. Nowell immediately signed them to his label, Skunk Records, while the band was still in high school. A pair of releases soon followed—1996's punk-tinged Slightly $toopid (featuring a guest appearance by Nowell on the song “Prophet” – later covered by Sublime and released on their box set, Everything Under the Sun) and 1998's surf-inspired The Longest Barrel Ride.

Though it’s been a couple of years since the release of their last studio album, Top Of The World (August 14, 2012), the Ocean Beach, California-based group—led by co-founders and multi-instrumentalists Kyle McDonald and Miles Doughty—have also found the same passionate dedication to their studio craft, holing up between tours in their own San Diego recording studio and record label complex. The balance of a prolific touring regimen between albums have helped to refine the tasty fusion and massive groove that permeates Stoopid’s trademark sound and seven album catalogue, as well as their live shows. “We’re a touring act, and we’ve been on the road pretty much non-stop over the last decade,” explains Doughty, offering that the more recent creation of the band’s own local recording studio and rehearsal clubhouse (within the warehouse district of Mission Valley just inland of Ocean Beach) certainly aided and influenced their last release Top of the World, and has inspired their latest sessions, which the band anticipates could stretch into a few different recording projects. While it’s a rare commodity for a band to tour as consistently as Slightly Stoopid, the group’s diligent commitment to live music provides some insight into their loyal fan base and unique creative metamorphosis throughout their 17-year existence. Though it’s been a couple of years since the release of their last studio album, Top Of The World (August 14, 2012), the Ocean Beach, California-based group—led by co-founders and multi-instrumentalists Kyle McDonald and Miles
Doughty—have also found the same passionate dedication to their studio craft, holing up between tours in their own San Diego recording studio and record label complex. The balance of a prolific touring regimen between albums have helped to refine the tasty fusion and massive groove that permeates Stoopid’s trademark sound and seven album catalogue, as well as their live shows.
“We’re a touring act, and we’ve been on the road pretty much non-stop over the last decade,” explains Doughty, offering that the more recent creation of the band’s own local recording studio and rehearsal clubhouse (within the warehouse district of Mission Valley just inland of Ocean Beach) certainly aided and influenced their last release Top of the World, and has inspired their latest sessions, which the band anticipates could stretch into a few different recording projects.

"Closer To The Sun" was performed live at Roberto's TRI Studios on September 13, 2011. It was an honor being invited by the Grateful Dead and Furthur's Bob Weir into his state of the art TRI Studios. Built by our friends at Meyer Sound Labs, and utilizing the technology of their new Constellation sound system, Slightly Stoopid had the privilege to invite some of their close friends and family down to "Roberto's" TRI clubhouse for an unprecedented live webcast and in-studio performance.
Our good friend Tommy Chong came down and hosted the event and provided some "Wisdom". Our extended family of musical guests joining us and playing on the session, features Karl Denson, Ivan and Ian Neville of Dumpstaphunk, Don Carlos, and Bob Weir himself!
The result is a 31 song / 2 set acoustic and electric performance including behind the scenes rehearsal footage, and a rare interview segment moderated by Tommy Chong.
Last but not least, a portion of all proceeds will benefit 2 charitable organizations whom the band supports: Save the Children and World Food Programme

Before a show at Nashville’s War Memorial Auditorium, Miles Doughty tells Premier Guitar’s John Bohlinger about the guitar and bass rigs he and Kyle McDonald share while fronting Slightly Stoopid.
Miles Doughty and Kyle McDonald split bass and guitar duties between them, sharing the same instruments throughout the night. The rigs have to accommodate both players’ personal tastes. For guitars, Slightly Stoopid seems to prefer double-humbucker-loaded Strat-style axes. The band’s No. 1 guitar features a relic’d body crafted by one of Doughty’s friends at Naked Guitars in San Diego. Doughtly added a Fender neck and loaded it up with a pair of Seymour Duncan pickups. He sometimes uses a pair of JB humbuckers, but occasionally will swap out the neck pickup for a Duncan Alnico II Pro Slash humbucker. He controls everything with a 3-way toggle switch.
Rounding out the trio of communal guitars is this headless Kiesel Vader model that houses two Kiesel K12 humbuckers. The band just got this guitar before they left on tour and according to Miles, “It makes you feel like a giant.”

Larry Ulibarri: "Everything is Awesome" tour, what's up with the name? Who named it and what does that stand for?
Miles Doughty: Well honestly the way it all kind of came together. The fans have really been asking for us and Dirty Heads to tour together for like a decade. Like they've just been saying "Hey, why don't you guys?" ya know, vice-versa, their fans, our fans, "Tour together." And the pieces all fell into place, and you know, obviously we were kind of bitin' off that Lego vibe of "Everything is Awesome", that movie that came out. And we thought it was kind of funny, ya know, a lot of us have kids now, so it was a funny thing to do.
Producer Wign'z: Now one of the pictures that you guys had was a Lego guy watching your show, and all the Lego performers on there, and like, it was awesome.
Miles: Yeah, it was pretty cool, I mean obviously there's so much you can do with it as far as artistically, and just the vibe of the whole tour, it felt like that title really kind of... "Everything IS Awesome", you know what I mean? Everything's going good, we got a new album that just dropped on June 30th called "Meanwhile... Back at the Lab".
Wign'z: It's a great album by the way, even that intro and that intro to start it off...
Miles: Dabbington...
Larry: Super cool!
Miles: We've actually been opening up our tour like that just because it kind of gives you that feel of the record. And like I said, and with the record coming out at the same time, and all this other stuff going on, the tour, you know "Everything is Awesome" really kind of is a fitting title.
Wign'z: You own your own record label though, right? It's all you guys, like from the drawings, like you said, you know, even the Lego images, that's all you guys right?
Miles: Yeah, we've had Stoopid Records since 2000 so we've always just put out our own music, you know, whenever we can, and we've had that, luckily, we've had that availability to do it, and the resources behind it and everything so it's been great.
Larry: A lot of artists, especially new artists, get stuck in like really long contracts that they never get out of so that's kind of cool that you guys run your own stuff.
Miles: Yeah, I mean we don't really... we're not even a band that... you don't see us doing a lot of video kind of things and weird like media stuff... We're not... We don't... that's never really been this band, you know, we've always been a band just, you know, we're some beach kids from Ocean Beach that, you know, we make the music that we like to make for ourselves and for our fans, and you know, we've never really have exploited ourselves on that media level of just, like...
Larry: Commercialism?
Miles: Yeah, commercialism, and even just the... you know, we do posts on Instagram and stuff of like cool pictures, but we don't sit there and do videos of ourselves just talking to everyone. It's just not something... to me, that's like, fake, and not really...
Wign'z: It's not what you're about, you're about the music!
Miles: Yeah. For us we've never been that kind of band, so it's cool that we just let the music speak for itself and just that vibe that we bring from Southern California.
Larry: One thing I like about you guys is that you really let your fans get in touch with you guys, I know you have a thing where you go in to Mexico, and people can just buy in and hang with you guys...
Wign'z: Closer to the Sun...
Miles: Closer to the Sun, yeah, it's at the Sapphire Resort down there in Puerto Morelos. It's amazing. We did it last year, and we're going to do it again this year in December, and it's honestly... I wasn't sure what to expect from it, because I've been on cruise ships where you're just kind of like "ohhh, I'm stuck, ya know". And it's one of those things when you're there at the resort, you have the ocean, you can go in to town, you can do all these things, but it's very intimate for the people that came down there. You'll see everybody at the resort, and they only let a thousand people go, total. So it's really cool. And it's a big... And it's not like a small place, it's a gigantic resort. They have like three or four massive pools and you're right on the ocean.

Producer Wign'z: Now one of the pictures that you guys had was a Lego guy watching your show, and all the Lego performers on there, and like, it was awesome.
Miles: Yeah, it was pretty cool, I mean obviously there's so much you can do with it as far as artistically, and just the vibe of the whole tour, it felt like that title really kind of... "Everything IS Awesome", you know what I mean? Everything's going good, we got a new album that just dropped on June 30th called "Meanwhile... Back at the Lab".
Wign'z: It's a great album by the way, even that intro and that intro to start it off...
Miles: Dabbington...
Larry: Super cool!
Miles: We've actually been opening up our tour like that just because it kind of gives you that feel of the record. And like I said, and with the record coming out at the same time, and all this other stuff going on, the tour, you know "Everything is Awesome" really kind of is a fitting title.
Wign'z: You own your own record label though, right? It's all you guys, like from the drawings, like you said, you know, even the Lego images, that's all you guys right?
Miles: Yeah, we've had Stoopid Records since 2000 so we've always just put out our own music, you know, whenever we can, and we've had that, luckily, we've had that availability to do it, and the resources behind it and everything so it's been great.
Larry: A lot of artists, especially new artists, get stuck in like really long contracts that they never get out of so that's kind of cool that you guys run your own stuff.
Miles: Yeah, I mean we don't really... we're not even a band that... you don't see us doing a lot of video kind of things and weird like media stuff... We're not... We don't... that's never really been this band, you know, we've always been a band just, you know, we're some beach kids from Ocean Beach that, you know, we make the music that we like to make for ourselves and for our fans, and you know, we've never really have exploited ourselves on that media level of just, like...
Larry: Commercialism?
Miles: Yeah, commercialism, and even just the... you know, we do posts on Instagram and stuff of like cool pictures, but we don't sit there and do videos of ourselves just talking to everyone. It's just not something... to me, that's like, fake, and not really...
Wign'z: It's not what you're about, you're about the music!
Miles: Yeah. For us we've never been that kind of band, so it's cool that we just let the music speak for itself and just that vibe that we bring from Southern California.
Larry: One thing I like about you guys is that you really let your fans get in touch with you guys, I know you have a thing where you go in to Mexico, and people can just buy in and hang with you guys...
Wign'z: Closer to the Sun...
Miles: Closer to the Sun, yeah, it's at the Sapphire Resort down there in Puerto Morelos. It's amazing. We did it last year, and we're going to do it again this year in December, and it's honestly... I wasn't sure what to expect from it, because I've been on cruise ships where you're just kind of like "ohhh, I'm stuck, ya know". And it's one of those things when you're there at the resort, you have the ocean, you can go in to town, you can do all these things, but it's very intimate for the people that came down there. You'll see everybody at the resort, and they only let a thousand people go, total. So it's really cool. And it's a big... And it's not like a small place, it's a gigantic resort. They have like three or four massive pools and you're right on the ocean.
