About WILLIAM CAMERON MENZIES
He was the consummate designer of film architecture on a grand scale, influenced by German expressionism and the work of the great European directors. He was known for his visual flair and timeless innovation, a man who meticulously preplanned the color and design of each film through a series of continuity sketches that made clear camera angles, lighting, and the actors’ positions for each scene, translating dramatic conventions of the stage to the new capabilities of film.

El primer cuarto de hora de 'La vida futura' ('Things to Come') asusta, impresiona… Narran sin solución de continuidad el horror de la guerra en primera persona, en primer plano. Todavía impactan más si nos atenemos al año en que fue estrenada: 1936, tres antes de que se declarase la trágica Segunda Guerra Mundial.
Con guión de H.G. Wells (1866-1946) basado en su propia novela 'La forma de lo que vendrá' (publicada en 1933, apenas meses después de que Adolf Hitler fuera nombrado canciller alemán), el escritor inglés vislumbraba lo que vendría con el ascenso del nazismo en Alemania y el fascismo en Italia, que expresaban de modo incontrastable las contradicciones fatales del capitalismo en la decadente Europa.
Claro está, el ya por entonces afamado autor de ciencia ficción no se atuvo a los acontecimientos históricos inmediatos; fue más allá: imaginó un guerra interminable, devastadora a escala universal. Incluso mucho más allá: hasta cuando aparece la "enfermedad errante" que profundiza el retroceso de la humanidad hasta la Edad Media.
Sin embargo, la civilización perdura en alguna parte con un concepto positivista que Wells acarrea del siglo XIX: "la hermandad de la eficiencia, la masonería de la ciencia" que salvaguarda la evolución humana cuando todo lo demás se ha acabado...
Con los mejores recursos de la época, el director norteamericano William Cameron Menzies (1896-1957) realiza una película maravillosa, una historia cinematográgica extraordinaria que tiene sus altibajos, por supuesto, pero que destaca por ser al mismo tiempo un excelente alegato pacifista en tiempos de guerra y un entretenimiento supremo.
'La vida futura' plantea también una encrucijada: se trata de una conminación a los hombres para que opten entre la conquista del conocimiento y del universo o la nada que subyace en los prejuicios colectivos, rémora que, de cuando en cuando, impide el progreso y pone en primer plano a siniestros personajes como los Hitler del siglo pasado.

TRAMA
In una notte stellata David, un ragazzino con l'hobby dell'astronomia, si ritrova a scrutare il cielo con il proprio mini-telescopio; ad un certo punto accade un fatto incredibile. Vede una navicella spaziale atterrare in un campo, non lontano da casa. Subito corre a chiamare i genitori, che si alzano malvolentieri, convinti che sia una fantasia del figlio dettata dalla sua sfegatata passione. Entrambi si recano a dare un'occhiata fino al vialetto fuori da casa. Non vedono nulla. Il padre avanza su un ponticello di legno oltre l'altura che porta al campo e all'improvviso viene risucchiato dalla sabbia sotto i suoi piedi. La madre e il figlio però non si accorgono di nulla.
Dopo alcuni minuti il padre riappare e con uno sguardo fisso nel vuoto riferisce ai famigliari di non avere visto nulla di strano, e ritornano in casa. Il figlio però si accorge che nel padre qualcosa è cambiato. Questi cambiamenti avvengono in moltissime persone, le quali tutte sono passate per il luogo dove secondo David sarebbe atterrata l'astronave.
La verità è sconcertante: sottoterra c'è davvero un'immensa astronave, gestita da un equipaggio di mostri spaziali, comandati telepaticamente dalla testa sottovetro di un alieno. Tramite una trappola infatti, le persone vengono catturate, facendole sprofondare nella sabbia in una buca collegata direttamente con la navicella. All'interno, in un laboratorio, queste persone vengono operate alla testa e dotate di un chip per il controllo della mente, un progetto che mira a conquistare il mondo. Chiunque poi abbia la forza di "rinsavire" verrebbe ucciso all'istante da una potente scarica, emessa dallo stesso chip.
Il piccolo David corre nell'osservatorio cittadino e riesce a convincere e a conquistare la fiducia della segretaria di un medico. I due poi dopo molta insistenza e anche prove concrete fanno accorrere l'esercito americano, con un enorme dispiegamento di forze; i militari riescono ad entrare nella navicella e ad uccidere molti esseri alieni e a liberare la gente ancora intrappolata, e poi installano una bomba. La navicella però accende i motori e fuoriesce dal sottosuolo con una terribile violenza. Inizia la fuga verso lo spazio, sennonché una volta arrivati al confine dell'atmosfera la bomba la fa esplodere, disintegrandola. David e la segretaria vengono premiati per avere contribuito a vincere la minaccia aliena.

About WILLIAM CAMERON MENZIES
He was the consummate designer of film architecture on a grand scale, influenced by German expressionism and the work of the great European directors. He was known for his visual flair and timeless innovation, a man who meticulously preplanned the color and design of each film through a series of continuity sketches that made clear camera angles, lighting, and the actors’ positions for each scene, translating dramatic conventions of the stage to the new capabilities of film.

El primer cuarto de hora de 'La vida futura' ('Things to Come') asusta, impresiona… Narran sin solución de continuidad el horror de la guerra en primera persona, en primer plano. Todavía impactan más si nos atenemos al año en que fue estrenada: 1936, tres antes de que se declarase la trágica Segunda Guerra Mundial.
Con guión de H.G. Wells (1866-1946) basado en su propia novela 'La forma de lo que vendrá' (publicada en 1933, apenas meses después de que Adolf Hitler fuera nombrado canciller alemán), el escritor inglés vislumbraba lo que vendría con el ascenso del nazismo en Alemania y el fascismo en Italia, que expresaban de modo incontrastable las contradicciones fatales del capitalismo en la decadente Europa.
Claro está, el ya por entonces afamado autor de ciencia ficción no se atuvo a los acontecimientos históricos inmediatos; fue más allá: imaginó un guerra interminable, devastadora a escala universal. Incluso mucho más allá: hasta cuando aparece la "enfermedad errante" que profundiza el retroceso de la humanidad hasta la Edad Media.
Sin embargo, la civilización perdura en alguna parte con un concepto positivista que Wells acarrea del siglo XIX: "la hermandad de la eficiencia, la masonería de la ciencia" que salvaguarda la evolución humana cuando todo lo demás se ha acabado...
Con los mejores recursos de la época, el director norteamericano William Cameron Menzies (1896-1957) realiza una película maravillosa, una historia cinematográgica extraordinaria que tiene sus altibajos, por supuesto, pero que destaca por ser al mismo tiempo un excelente alegato pacifista en tiempos de guerra y un entretenimiento supremo.
'La vida futura' plantea también una encrucijada: se trata de una conminación a los hombres para que opten entre la conquista del conocimiento y del universo o la nada que subyace en los prejuicios colectivos, rémora que, de cuando en cuando, impide el progreso y pone en primer plano a siniestros personajes como los Hitler del siglo pasado.

TRAMA
In una notte stellata David, un ragazzino con l'hobby dell'astronomia, si ritrova a scrutare il cielo con il proprio mini-telescopio; ad un certo punto accade un fatto incredibile. Vede una navicella spaziale atterrare in un campo, non lontano da casa. Subito corre a chiamare i genitori, che si alzano malvolentieri, convinti che sia una fantasia del figlio dettata dalla sua sfegatata passione. Entrambi si recano a dare un'occhiata fino al vialetto fuori da casa. Non vedono nulla. Il padre avanza su un ponticello di legno oltre l'altura che porta al campo e all'improvviso viene risucchiato dalla sabbia sotto i suoi piedi. La madre e il figlio però non si accorgono di nulla.
Dopo alcuni minuti il padre riappare e con uno sguardo fisso nel vuoto riferisce ai famigliari di non avere visto nulla di strano, e ritornano in casa. Il figlio però si accorge che nel padre qualcosa è cambiato. Questi cambiamenti avvengono in moltissime persone, le quali tutte sono passate per il luogo dove secondo David sarebbe atterrata l'astronave.
La verità è sconcertante: sottoterra c'è davvero un'immensa astronave, gestita da un equipaggio di mostri spaziali, comandati telepaticamente dalla testa sottovetro di un alieno. Tramite una trappola infatti, le persone vengono catturate, facendole sprofondare nella sabbia in una buca collegata direttamente con la navicella. All'interno, in un laboratorio, queste persone vengono operate alla testa e dotate di un chip per il controllo della mente, un progetto che mira a conquistare il mondo. Chiunque poi abbia la forza di "rinsavire" verrebbe ucciso all'istante da una potente scarica, emessa dallo stesso chip.
Il piccolo David corre nell'osservatorio cittadino e riesce a convincere e a conquistare la fiducia della segretaria di un medico. I due poi dopo molta insistenza e anche prove concrete fanno accorrere l'esercito americano, con un enorme dispiegamento di forze; i militari riescono ad entrare nella navicella e ad uccidere molti esseri alieni e a liberare la gente ancora intrappolata, e poi installano una bomba. La navicella però accende i motori e fuoriesce dal sottosuolo con una terribile violenza. Inizia la fuga verso lo spazio, sennonché una volta arrivati al confine dell'atmosfera la bomba la fa esplodere, disintegrandola. David e la segretaria vengono premiati per avere contribuito a vincere la minaccia aliena.
