A View from Europe
Many speak and write about Abkhazia in heated terms.
This small country had first to withstand a brutal war, and then a harsh economic blockade. It has since proclaimed its independence and is striving to achieve international recognition. Beyond its frontiers, very few know the pre-history of this state.
Here two Englishmen introduce this Black Sea country to an international audience.
The author of the script and the presenter is Professor George Hewitt, a specialist on the Caucasus (particularly its languages) who has visited Abkhazia many times.
But his companion in this trip, a member of the House of Lords in the British Parliament, Lord Nicholas Rea, is here for the first time. Whilst Professor Hewitt acquaints the audience with the history and culture of Abkhazia, Lord Rea off-screen independently studies the life of this society.
When they meet again at the end of the film, the presenter and his companion share the same conclusion: despite the difficult conditions, Abkhazia has managed to construct and develop a democratic society. It has now existed for 15 years and continues to progress successfully and independently, transforming itself into a fully-fledged State.
The film is addressed to the widest possible audience and for this purpose has been translated into many languages.

Gagra (Georgian: გაგრა; Abkhaz and Russian: Гагра) is a town in Abkhazia,[note 1] sprawling for 5 km on the northeast coast of the Black Sea, at the foot of the Caucasus Mountains. Its subtropical climate made Gagra a popular health resort in Imperial Russian and Soviet times.
It had a population of 26,636 in 1989, but this has fallen considerably due to the ethnic cleansing of Georgians in Abkhazia and other demographic shifts during and after the War in Abkhazia (1992–93).
Gagra is the centre of the district of the same name. It is located in the western part of Region of Abkhazia, and river Psou serves as a border with Krasnodar Kray of Russia.

Abkhazia
Abkhazia (Abkhaz: Аҧсны́ Apsny [apʰsˈnɨ]; Georgian: აფხაზეთი Apkhazeti [apʰxazɛtʰi]; Russian: Абхазия Abkhaziya) is a partially recognised state controlled by a separatist government on the eastern coast of the Black Sea and the south-western flank of the Caucasus.
Abkhazia considers itself an independent state, called the Republic of Abkhazia or Aphsny. This status is recognised by Russia, Nicaragua, Venezuela, Nauru and also by the partially recognised state of South Ossetia and the unrecognised Transnistria and Nagorno-Karabakh.
The Georgian government, the United Nations and the majority of the world's governments consider Abkhazia a part of Georgia's territory, though Georgia does not control it. Under Georgia's official designation it is an autonomous republic, called the Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia.

Gagra (Georgian: გაგრა; Abkhaz and Russian: Гагра) is a town in Abkhazia,[note 1] sprawling for 5 km on the northeast coast of the Black Sea, at the foot of the Caucasus Mountains. Its subtropical climate made Gagra a popular health resort in Imperial Russian and Soviet times.
It had a population of 26,636 in 1989, but this has fallen considerably due to the ethnic cleansing of Georgians in Abkhazia and other demographic shifts during and after the War in Abkhazia (1992–93).
Gagra is the centre of the district of the same name. It is located in the western part of Region of Abkhazia, and river Psou serves as a border with Krasnodar Kray of Russia.
