Red Bull Hardline, the brainchild of Dan Atherton, has been dubbed one of the most epic downhill courses in the world. And there’s good reason for this. Red Bull Hardline with Jeep returned to the hills of mid-Wales this weekend to take on Dan Atherton’s beast of a trail that proved to be bigger and more technical than anything ever seen before in downhill mountain biking.

Progression was once again the word on everyone’s lips as the riders spent the majority of the weekend getting used to the huge features and technical elements of the track before setting down qualifying times on Saturday.
Former World Champion Gee Atherton was untouchable on Saturday; setting down the fastest qualifying time ensuring that he was the final rider down the course in the finals, but a tyre mechanical meant that he had to limp down the course leaving Ruaridh Cunningham to take the title.

Downhill
Downhill is an alpine skiing discipline. Unlike the other alpine skiing events, slalom, giant slalom, super giant slalom, and combined, which emphasize turning and technique, downhill is more about speed. Speeds of up to 130 km/h (81 mph) are common in international competition. Athletes must have an aerodynamically efficient tuck position to minimize drag and increase speed.
The term downhill skiing is also used as a synonym for alpine skiing, both for the FIS sport and the recreational activity.
History
The rules for the Downhill were originally developed by Sir Arnold Lunn for the 1921 British National Ski Championships. The 100 miles per hour (160 km/h) barrier was broken by Johan Clarey at the 2013 Lauberhorn World Cup, beating previous record of 98 mph, set by Italian Stefan Thanei in 2005.
Course
A typical course begins at or near the top of the mountain on a piste that is closed off to the public and groomed for the race. Gates are farther apart. The courses in the world's most notable ski areas are well-established and do not change significantly year to year.

Former World Champion Gee Atherton was untouchable on Saturday; setting down the fastest qualifying time ensuring that he was the final rider down the course in the finals, but a tyre mechanical meant that he had to limp down the course leaving Ruaridh Cunningham to take the title.

In competitive races, a continuous course is defined on each side by a strip of tape. If a rider leaves the course by crossing or breaking the tape they must return to the course at the point of exit, unless they do not gain a time advantage from crossing the tape, in which case they can continue with their run. Riders start at intervals, often seeded from slowest to fastest. Courses typically take two to five minutes to complete and winning margins are often less than a second. Riders are timed with equipment similar to that used in downhill skiing.
