Lima

Lima /ˈliːmə/ is the capital and the largest city of Peru. It is located in the valleys of the Chillón, Rímac and Lurín rivers, in the central coastal part of the country, overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Together with the seaport of Callao, it forms a contiguous urban area known as the Lima Metropolitan Area. With a population of almost 10 million, Lima is the most populous metropolitan area of Peru, and the third largest city in the Americas (as defined by "city proper"), just behind São Paulo and Mexico City.

Lima was founded by Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro on January 18, 1535, as Ciudad de los Reyes. It became the capital and most important city in the Spanish Viceroyalty of Peru. Following the Peruvian War of Independence, it became the capital of the Republic of Peru. Today, around one-third of the Peruvian population lives in the metropolitan area.

Lima is home to one of the oldest higher learning institutions in the New World. The National University of San Marcos, founded on May 12 of 1551, during Spanish colonial regime, is the oldest continuously functioning university in the Americas.

Marina Lima

Marina Correia Lima (Portuguese pronunciation: [maˈɾinɐ ˈlimɐ], born September 17, 1955) is a Brazilian singer and songwriter. She is a prominent female pioneer of Brazilian rock music.

Career

She began composing songs at age 17.

From the age of five to twelve, Mas before achieving major success with the 1984 album Fullgás, which included the hit singles "Fullgás", "Me Chama" (written by Lobão), "Veneno" and "Mesmo que Seja Eu".

In 1986 she released the first home video concert by a Brazilian artist, "Todas Ao Vivo" which chronicled the tour in support of her 1985 album "Todas" and included several of her previous hits as well as backstage interviews. The late 80s saw Marin".

Marina finally returned to prominence with the release of 2003's Acústico MTV (the Brazilian equivalent of the MTV Unplugged series), which spawned two top 10 hit singles (the new track "Sugar" and a reworked version of her 1984 hit "Fullgas") and became her best selling album in over a decade. The DVD (the first of her career) was also one of the year's best sellers. Her most recent album is No Osso - Ao Vivo, from 2015.

It's Not Enough

"It's Not Enough" is a song recorded by The Who, written by Pete Townshend and his partner Rachel Fuller, and featured on the band's 2006 album Endless Wire. It also appears on a reissue of the Who's compilation album Then and Now and in Townshend's rock musical The Boy Who Heard Music. The lead single from Endless Wire, "It's Not Enough" peaked at #37 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, their first US chart hit since "Eminence Front" in 1982.

History

The song originally started life with music and lyrics by Rachel Fuller, but Pete Townshend liked the music and wrote different lyrics to use for the song that appears on Endless Wire. He later explained the origins of the song: "Watching Le Mepris, the '60s film by Jean-Luc Godard starring Brigitte Bardot, I found myself wondering why it is that we choose people to partner who we feel aren't quite right. Bardot asks her lover, 'Do you adore my legs?' He nods. 'My breasts?' He nods. 'My arms?' He nods. She goes over her entire body. He nods every time. When she's finished she gets up and tells him, 'It's not enough'". Bardot and the film 'Le Mepris' are mentioned specifically in the song.

Clan of Xymox

Clan of Xymox, also known as simply Xymox, are a Dutch rock band formed in 1981. Clan of Xymox featured a trio of songwriters — Pieter Nooten, Ronny Moorings and Anka Wolbert — and gained success in the 1980s, releasing their first two albums on a prestigious independent UK label, a third and fourth album on a major US label and scoring a hit single in the United States. Early pioneers of the dark and moody electronic music known as dark wave, their 1980s releases included synthpop/electronic dance music.

Though the band is still active and continues to tour and release records, of the original songwriters (Nooten, Moorings and Wolbert), only Moorings remains in the band today. After the departure of Nooten and Wolbert in the early 1990s, their music turned increasingly goth.

History

4AD and the Peel Sessions (1981–1988)

The band formed as a project of Ronny Moorings and Anka Wolbert in Nijmegen, Netherlands in 1981, before moving to Amsterdam and joining Frank Weyzig and Pieter Nooten who added their own contributions. Assuming the name "Xymox", the group released a mini-album, Subsequent Pleasures, in 1983. They were invited by Brendan Perry to support Dead Can Dance on a UK tour and were signed to the indie label 4AD, which released their eponymous debut album in 1985. The track 7th Time, with Anka Wolbert on lead vocals, was picked up by John Peel, leading to the band recording two of the Peel Sessions at the BBC, in June and November 1985. Peel referred to the band's dark and melancholic sound as "darkwave".
