This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Traditionally all PhDs went on to become academic professors. Times have changed. This speaker offers an idea to help prepare graduate students for the real world.
Nadia Jaber is a graduate student at Stony Brook University, pursuing a PhD in Molecular and Cellular Biology. Her thesis work focuses on how mammalian cells discard the chemical signals used to communicate with one another. During her graduate training, she realized she wanted something different than the traditional academic career path that PhDs are geared for. Exploring her interests, she found a passion in science and health communications and has since begun the Advanced Certificate in Health Communications offered by the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science. Her goal is to use her science background to disseminate important health and science information in order to empower the general public to make educated decisions.
Outside of science and communications, Nadia likes to try new recipes, paint quotes for her Etsy shop, take kickboxing classes and sail around Northport.

Doctor of Philosophy
A Doctor of Philosophy degree (PhD or Ph.D. or DPhil) or a Doctorate of Philosophy, from the Latin Doctor Philosophiae (for DPhil) or Philosophiae Doctor (for PhD or Ph.D.), is a type of doctorate awarded by universities in many countries.
The degree varies considerably according to the country, institution, and time period, from entry-level research degrees to higher doctorates. A person who attains a doctorate of philosophy is automatically awarded the academic title of doctor. During the studies that lead to the degree, the student is called doctoral student or PhD student, but also "doctoral candidate" at the appropriate stage.
In the context of academic degrees, the term philosophy does not refer solely to the field of philosophy, but is used in a broader sense in accordance with its original Greek meaning, which is "love of wisdom". In most of Europe, all fields (history, philosophy, social sciences, mathematics and natural philosophy/natural sciences) other than theology, law, and medicine (the so-called professional, vocational, or technical curriculum) were traditionally known as philosophy, and in Germany and elsewhere in Europe the basic faculty of liberal arts was known as the faculty of philosophy.

Residential Energy Feedback: Research, Technology, and Potential for the Informed Home
Research Summary: Scientists and elected officials agree that climate change is an issue that can no longer be ignored and residential energy use is a prime target for reducing emissions, accounting for over 20% of annual emissions. One promising strategy for promoting conservation is the provision of feedback about energy use. Feedback -- the process of giving people information about their behavior to reinforce and/or change behavior--is receiving increasing attention due to changes in technology and infrastructure that allow information to be collected, processed, and sent back to consumers quickly and cheaply. Many programs and products have emerged in recent years, demonstrating political and technical potential for wide-scale provision of energy feedback. However, past work has been critiqued for its lack of theoretical rigor; many have called for more attention to the conditions under which theories are successful in explaining conservation. This research presents an interdisciplinary, mixed methods approach to understanding the role of feedback in residential energy conservation through five distinct, yet interrelated approaches: (1) literature review and integration into a new Eco-Feedback Intervention Theory (eFIT) (2) meta-analysis of past research on residential energy feedback, (3) taxonomy of energy feedback technology, (3) mixed-methods analysis of naturalistic energy feedback users, and (4) introduction and psychometric testing of a Usability Perception Scale (UPscale). As a whole, it seeks to extend what is known about energy feedback and to make suggestions for future research and practice. While there much research addressing whether feedback works, there has been little research into the more nuanced questions of how and for whom it works best. The present research aims to address this need.
Biography: Beth founded and directs the Transformational Media Lab in the Center for Unconventional Security Affairs (CUSA), where she studies the psychology of leveraging new media and technology for social impact. Current projects investigate public acceptance of technology, documentary film, and digital activism. Beth has over a dozen publications in venues ranging from Peace Studies to Persuasive Technology and lectures regularly on Transformational Media and the Psychology of Sustainability. She is active in the American Psychological Association's Division 34 (Environmental Psychology), currently serving as Treasurer and Program Chair for the 2014 Convention. Beth holds a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Psychology and Spanish from the University of Redlands and a Masters in Public Administration (MPA) from California State University, Long Beach. Prior to beginning her doctoral studies, she spent a decade working in K-12 education, holding positions as a teacher, counselor, curriculum consultant, and school administrator. After graduation, Beth will be staying at CUSA and working on the NSF-funded Flood RISE project, investigating the role of parcel-level flood modeling coupled with transformative communication strategies to improve flood resilience. The project aims to articulate a strategy for effectively translating climate science into actionable information to catalyze behavioral change.

Shailza is a beautiful successful actress, living happily with her husband Deepak. One day on their marriage anniversary, Deepak & Shailza decided to go for a vacation, to a lovely resort, at a beautiful hill station, in order to spend romantic time with each other. On reaching the hill station, Shailza gets negative vibes in circumstances & some mysterious incident happens. After1-2 days, Shailza gets life threats from an unknown person. She tells Deepak about all the incidents that happen with her. Deepak convinces her that all this is her mind's mashup and all this is due to work stress. But after more threats, the couple gets upset and decides to leave the resort. While on their way back home; they meet with an accident; some goons attack the couple’s car. In the accident Deepak gets a head injury, while Shailza is kidnapped by the goons.
Inspector Aryan is investing the kidnapping case of Shailza; he enquires with Deepak about the accident day. On the other hand, the leader of the kidnappers, Akash and his team Soni, Babu & Jagan, call Deepak for ransom money. Inspector Aryan gets a clue and reaches the place, where Deepak is going to give money to the kidnappers. On police interruption, goons get furious and they threaten Deepak, since he informed the police. Deepak gets angry with police for their interference and for putting Shailza’s life in trouble. After many turns & twists, the suspense is revealed, the police rescue the Shailza and the real culprits are punished.
