Yet in terms of Grand Slam titles won they now stand level with each other, after the older sibling claimed his first US Open title. 'I'm starting to move out the shadows a little bit but there's still a long way to go,' said Jamie after he and Brazilian partner Bruno Soares had clinically taken apart Guillermo Garcia-Lopez and Pablo Carreno Busta 6-3, 6-2 in the final. 'It's a great feeling, these are the hardest events to win, and the last couple of years I've played my best tennis at these tournaments.' Of course nobody would put winning two doubles and the Wimbledon mixed of 2007 on a par with what Andy has achieved, but neither is it to be underestimated either. And adding the US Open to January's Australian Open makes the joint career haul of one family from Dunblane look all the more impressive. Between them they have won at every Grand Slam bar the French Open, and there is also the matter of two Olympic gold medals among Andy's personal tally of 39 titles. Jamie admitted afterwards that watching his sibling has been a powerful incentive. 'I guess over the last few years, seeing him do so well all the time, I've wanted to have some of that success, as well,' he said. ' I think the last 18 months I have started to really kind of show what I can do. Jamie reached the Wimbledon and Flushing Meadows finals in 2015, but it was only when he broke up with Australian John Peers and teamed with Soares that the Major titles started to coming. So, too, did the world number one position, something which his brother is going to struggle to match in the altogether harder school of singles. They have also won the Davis Cup in tandem, and Jamie expects to be fit for next Friday's start of the semi-final against Argentina in Glasgow, despite the one serious alarm. After five games he had to call an injury timeout to have his neck manipulated after ricking it in his opening service game. 'It's not that comfortable now, but thankfully it didn't really affect me playing. I imagine I'll be absolutely fine for next week,' he said. Jamie was broken in that first game, but thereafter their doubles craft was too much for the two Spaniards, who are both top 50 singles players taking the two-man code more seriously this year. It is easy to see why the left-right combination of Murray and Soares is so effective, especially in a match like this. Soares returned serve especially well, contributing to the remarkable figure of the Spaniards winning only fifty per cent of points on their first serve. Murray complemented that with a devastating display at the net, where he has few equals anywhere in the game. The three breaks that took place from 2-2 in the first set were all executed by the 30 year-old Scot punching volleys through the opposition.
