The National Medal of Arts is an award and title created by the United States Congress in 1984, for the purpose of honoring artists and patrons of the arts. A prestigious American honor, it is the highest honor specifically given for achievement in the arts conferred to an individual artist on behalf of the people. Honorees are selected by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), and ceremoniously presented the award by the President of the United States. The medal was designed for the NEA by sculptor Robert Graham.
In 1983, prior to the official establishment of the Medal, the following artists and patrons received a medal from President Reagan, arranged by the President's Committee on the Arts and the Humanities:

On Oct. 5, 1995, Bill Monroe, "the Father of Bluegrass Music" was awarded the National Medal of Arts by President Bill Clinton. I was there in person, representing the International Bluegrass Music Museum. The event was held in a huge tent on the White House lawn, and it was a moving ceremony for all the recipients that day, including Monroe, Bob Hope, and many more. I could not take any video or still photos, but the whole official video of that day's presentations is online at http://www.c-span.org/video/?67492-1/national-arts-humanities-awards. This three-minute segment is an excerpt: the part of the awards presentation in which Bill Monroe received his medal. A proud moment for Big Mon, which I was honored to witness. . .
On February 13, 2012, President Obama awarded the 2011 National Humanities Medal to Teo Ruiz at the White House. Teo was being awarded for his inspired teaching and writing. His erudite studies have deepened our understanding of medieval Spain and Europe, while his long examination of how society has coped with terror has taught important lessons about the dark side of western progress. The National Medal of Arts is the highest award given to artists by the United States government honoring the extraordinary accomplishments of those engaged in the creation and production of arts. President Barack Obama presented the awards earlier this month (Sept. 10, 2014) in a ceremony at the White House with recipients ranging from authors and actors to visual artists and philanthropists. Columbus-based artist Ann Hamilton was among eleven who received citations during the ceremony, including actress Sally Field and author Stephen King.
Stephen King was recently awarded a National Medal of Arts, the highest level of award for artists given by the United States government. As a congratulations, I made up a list of my top 5 favorite horrifying novels by Stephen King. I grew up reading King's novels and they have continued to be an important part of my life into adulthood. I've read more of his books and short stories than I can remember, but these 5 are the ones that stick out in my mind. I was so excited to hear a medal would be given to Stephen King this year - his work has taught me the art of fear and the subtleties of horror, and I can certainly credit him as one of the biggest inspirations for this channel and my love of horror in general. Come Play with Me, Echoes of Time, Ghost Story, and Gloom Horizon by Ke...
