In Britain, which seems to have an insatiable appetite for wartime history, the sacrificed soldiers of World War II were resurrected by the Brexit campaign. The lead up to the EU referendum saw both sides appeal to the legacy of WWII to make their case. It seemed like political campaigners were prepared to speak on behalf of long-since-dead soldiers — so we went to meet with some living war veterans, all men in their 90s, to talk about the upcoming Brexit.

The American Civil War ended almost a century and a half ago (April 9th, 1865) with the surrender of the Confederate forces at the Appomattox Court House in Northern Virginia. About 54 years ago, in December 1959, the last reported surviving veteran of the Civil War, Walter Washington Williams, passed away in Houston, Texas at the reported age of 117. President Dwight Eisenhower declared it a national day of mourning and gave him an honorary rank. Congress recognized his passing on the floor. Reporters, writers, and well-wishers all came to Houston to pay respects to the man who was America’s last direct living link to the war that divided the United States for a time. Of course, this all may have been a lie.

Joy Lofthouse is a veteran of the Air Transport Auxiliary during World War Two and now, at 92-years-old, the former Spitfire pilot returned to the skies.
Seven decades after her last flight in the iconic plane, Joy described the experience as “lovely: it was perfect”, making her feel "quite young.”
The ATA made an enormous contribution to the war effort by taking over from service pilots the task of ferrying Royal Air Force and Royal Navy warplanes between factories, maintenance units and front-line squadrons.

For 47 years, Master Sergeant James Holt was one of the hundreds of unaccounted Americans from the war until new DNA technology identified parts of his remains. As David Martin reports, Holt's return was met with a special and spontaneous salute.

Veteran
A veteran (from Latin vetus, meaning "old") is a person who has had long service or experience in a particular occupation or field; "A veteran of..."
This page refers to military veterans, i.e., a person who has served or is serving in the armed forces. Those veterans that have had direct exposure to acts of military conflict may also be referred to as war veterans (although not all military conflicts, or areas in which armed combat takes place, are necessarily referred to as wars).
Public attitude towards veterans
Military veterans often receive special treatment in their respective countries due to the sacrifices they made during wars. Different countries handle this differently: some openly support veterans through government programs, while others ignore them. Veterans are also subject to illnesses directly related to their military service such as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). War veterans are generally treated with great respect and honour for their contribution to the world and country by their own nationals. Conversely there are often negative feelings towards the veterans of foreign nations held long after the war is over; for example towards the German Nazi soldiers, yet they are no less veterans of war than those of the winning side. There are exceptions. Veterans of unpopular or lost conflicts may be discriminated against. Veterans of short or small conflicts are often forgotten when the country fought bigger conflicts. In some countries with strong anti-military traditions (e.g., Germany after 1945), veterans are neither honoured in any special way by the general public, nor have their dedicated Veterans Day, although events are sometimes orchestrated by minority groups.

The American Civil War ended almost a century and a half ago (April 9th, 1865) with the surrender of the Confederate forces at the Appomattox Court House in Northern Virginia. About 54 years ago, in December 1959, the last reported surviving veteran of the Civil War, Walter Washington Williams, passed away in Houston, Texas at the reported age of 117. President Dwight Eisenhower declared it a national day of mourning and gave him an honorary rank. Congress recognized his passing on the floor. Reporters, writers, and well-wishers all came to Houston to pay respects to the man who was America’s last direct living link to the war that divided the United States for a time. Of course, this all may have been a lie.

The American Civil War ended almost a century and a half ago (April 9th, 1865) with the surrender of the Confederate forces at the Appomattox Court House in Northern Virginia. About 54 years ago, in December 1959, the last reported surviving veteran of the Civil War, Walter Washington Williams, passed away in Houston, Texas at the reported age of 117. President Dwight Eisenhower declared it a national day of mourning and gave him an honorary rank. Congress recognized his passing on the floor. Reporters, writers, and well-wishers all came to Houston to pay respects to the man who was America’s last direct living link to the war that divided the United States for a time. Of course, this all may have been a lie.

Vince Emanuele is a former US Marine of two tours to Iraq. He refused to do a third. He is now the organiser for the Michigan chapter of Veterans For Peace and serves on the national Board of Directors of Iraq Veterans Against the War. Filmed in Sydney on July 10 2013 by GLTV, the public meeting was held to highlight the ongoing US empire wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and to link the plight of returning veterans to the military industrial complex and the culture of militarism that pervades US society.

Interview conducted by Eileen Hurst. William Phillips joined the U.S. Army in 1963 at the age of 18, with the goal of having a career in the military. He attended basic training at Fort Jackson, SC which lasted for 12 weeks. He then went to Fort Gordon, GA for Advanced Infantry Training and upon his graduation he went immediately to Jump School. Jump School consisted mainly of practicing jumps and techniques. He also went to Ranger School and Special Warfare School before going over to Vietnam. In these schools he learned techniques in communications and intelligence gathering, along with other Special Forces skills. He was part of the 5th Special Forces Group with a base in Danang, however much of his time was spent as part of small team of both Americans and Vietnamese soldiers that ran reconnaissance missions in Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, and up and down the Ho Chi Minh Trail, as part of the Special Operations Group. His first assignment on this team was as a radio man, and then after six to seven missions he was made team leader. Phillips describes what the missions were like, what their basic objectives were, and the outcome of some of those missions. After a year in Vietnam, he was transferred to the 8th Special Forces in Panama, where the duties of the Special Forces team were more typical than they had been in Vietnam. There he was part of teams that would go into South America and teach indigenous people warfare techniques among other assignments. After a year in Panama, Phillips volunteered for an additional year of service in Vietnam. He was sent back to the same unit, and assigned the same sort of missions, although he notes that the Tet Offensive changed the missions somewhat. His unit was very a dangerous unit to be a part of, they had a 130% casualty rate, 20% were killed in action, and Phillips himself was wounded five times. He again volunteered for a third tour in Vietnam, and he did not return to the United States until 1970. Although he had intended to make a career in the military, he instead decided to leave so that he could marry. He was discharged in 1971, and went to college on the GI Bill. Phillips also discusses daily life and the PTSD that he suffered from.

Jake Clark is the creator and executive director of Malibu-based Save A Warrior (SAW); a five and half day ‘war detox’ for active duty and returning Warriors at risk for PTS-related suicide.
Jake is a two-time, prior service returning Warrior (1983 – 1988; 2002 – 2011) with consecutive Post 9/11 Peacekeeping tours to Kosovo; a previous autonomous region within Serbia, which
following the collapse of the former Yugoslavia had further devolved amidst genocidal atrocities.
During his break in military service, Jake served in sworn law enforcement positions for the U.S. Secret Service, the Los Angeles Police Department and as a special agent for the Federal Bureau of Investigation in the Los Angeles Field Office.
As a member of a combined FBI / DEA Task Force, Jake was assigned to the Southwest Border (SWB) initiative whose focus was interdicting major drug traffickers and money laundering operations.
In 2012, while attending Pepperdine University’s Graziadio School of Business and Management on a Post 9/11 GI Bill and Yellow Ribbon scholarship, Jake interrupted his graduate studies
to create Save A Warrior. He resides in Southern California.

GUEST BIO:
Jake Clark is the creator and executive director of Malibu-based Save A Warrior (SAW); a five and half day ‘war detox’ for active duty and returning Warriors at risk for PTS-related suicide.
Jake is a two-time, prior service returning Warrior (1983 – 1988; 2002 – 2011) with consecutive Post 9/11 Peacekeeping tours to Kosovo; a previous autonomous region within Serbia, which
following the collapse of the former Yugoslavia had further devolved amidst genocidal atrocities.
During his break in military service, Jake served in sworn law enforcement positions for the U.S. Secret Service, the Los Angeles Police Department and as a special agent for the Federal Bureau of Investigation in the Los Angeles Field Office.
As a member of a combined FBI / DEA Task Force, Jake was assigned to the Southwest Border (SWB) initiative whose focus was interdicting major drug traffickers and money laundering operations.
In 2012, while attending Pepperdine University’s Graziadio School of Business and Management on a Post 9/11 GI Bill and Yellow Ribbon scholarship, Jake interrupted his graduate studies
to create Save A Warrior. He resides in Southern California.

Tuesday, June 6th, 1944: D-Day. At 0630 hours 12,000 aircraft, 7,000 naval vessels, 160,000 brave Allied troops and 195,000 brave Allied sailors began the largest amphibious invasion in history. This invasion marked the beginning of the Normandy campaign and was code-named Operation Overlord.
Friday, June 6th, 2014 marked the 70th anniversary of this historic event and once again many our brave World War II veterans were on the move; this time to Bedford, Virginia, site of the National D-Day Memorial. To celebrate and honor the men and women who planned, worked, fought and died for our freedom in the Normandy invasion campaign, the Rotary Clubs of North Carolina and Virginia led the project to organize and sponsor the travel of every surviving veteran in those states to the memorial for the celebration.
