Detroit Zoological Society Executive Director Ron Kagan will share a view of the future that includes a different relationship between human and non-human animals. Ron Kagan is the Executive Director and CEO of the Detroit Zoological Society. An advocate and activist for compassionate conservation and animal welfare, Ron is a leader in environmental and humane education. Over the past thirty years, Ron’s career background includes working and consulting for numerous zoos and aquaria. Ron has authored several papers in scientific journals, encyclopedic entries, and book chapters on both museum and zoological subjects.

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Vaccination and desexing of animals such as dogs are a common practice and considered completely routine in Australia. However, in developing communities where access to basic resources, funding and Veterinarian training are limited, animal welfare can prove to be a challenge. Charmaine shares the mental and physical struggles of addressing these challenges.
Charmaine has been highly engaged with the veterinary community since her graduation from the University of Melbourne in 2004. Her qualifications include the Bachelor of Veterinary Science with first-class honours, Bachelor of Animal Science in pain pharmacology research, ANZCVS Membership in Veterinary Pharmacology and Bachelor of Business Studies in management.
Charmaine is President of Vets Beyond Borders (VBB). She is also on the Australia and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists’ Chapter of Veterinary Pharmacology, and is on the committee of the Australian Veterinary Association’s Australian Vets in Industry special interest group.

Animal welfare
Animal welfare is the well-being of animals. The standards of "good" animal welfare vary considerably between different contexts. These standards are under constant review and are debated, created and revised by animal welfare groups, legislators and academics worldwide.Animal welfare science uses various measures, such as longevity, disease, immunosuppression, behavior, physiology, and reproduction, although there is debate about which of these indicators provide the best information.
Concern for animal welfare is often based on the belief that non-human animals are sentient and that consideration should be given to their well-being or suffering, especially when they are under the care of humans. These concerns can include how animals are slaughtered for food, how they are used in scientific research, how they are kept (as pets, in zoos, farms, circuses, etc.), and how human activities affect the welfare and survival of wild species.
Animal welfare was a concern of some ancient civilizations but began to take a larger place in Western public policy in 19th-century Great Britain. In the 21st century, it is a significant focus of interest in science, ethics, and animal welfare organizations.

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Vaccination and desexing of animals such as dogs are a common practice and considered completely routine in Australia. However, in developing communities where access to basic resources, funding and Veterinarian training are limited, animal welfare can prove to be a challenge. Charmaine shares the mental and physical struggles of addressing these challenges.
Charmaine has been highly engaged with the veterinary community since her graduation from the University of Melbourne in 2004. Her qualifications include the Bachelor of Veterinary Science with first-class honours, Bachelor of Animal Science in pain pharmacology research, ANZCVS Membership in Veterinary Pharmacology and Bachelor of Business Studies in management.
Charmaine is President of Vets Beyond Borders (VBB). She is also on the Australia and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists’ Chapter of Veterinary Pharmacology, and is on the committee of the Australian Veterinary Association’s Australian Vets in Industry special interest group.

Tyson Fires 10 U.S. Workers Over Animal Cruelty
Tyson Foods Inc said it has fired 10 workers who were captured abusing breeder chickens in Virginia in a secretly recorded video released by an animal rights group on Thursday. The company also said it will retrain workers who handle live poultry on animal welfare policies after the latest instances of abuse came to light. The video by the activist group Compassion Over Killing showed Tyson workers at several facilities punching, kicking and flinging live birds. Scientists from Scotland’s Rural College are hosting a virtual discussion on how best to care for our animals. The animal welfare experts will be online on Friday 2 October at 1pm and school classes can join them by using Google+ Hangout or through YouTube.
The event has been organised to celebrate 50 years since a significant report on livestock welfare which highlighted the need for scientific methods of assessing animal welfare and called for better more consistent care. As the report is a foundation stone of modern day animal welfare research, the scientists will also discuss the journey from that publication to modern day animal welfare science and what lies in store in the years ahead.

The EU and US have very different rules on the treatment of farm animals. The EU recognizes animals as sentient beings and requires Member states to respect their welfare, banning some of the worst forms of cruelty, many of which are common in the United States. Progress has been more limited in the U.S., but animal welfare activists won a major victory with California’s passage of a new law banning eggs produced in battery cages.
The EU has proposed non-binding language on animal welfare in the draft text in the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP), but animal welfare advocates worry that this weak language will only make things worse. In fact, other language in TTIP intended to harmonize standards could jeopardize laws like the California ban and make it more difficult to raise animal welfare or food safety standards.
