The next in a series of lessons on the grammar of the Romance languages. Learn how verbs developed from Classical Latin through Vulgar Latin and into the Romance languages. Verbs have a meaningful stem and a grammatical ending. Vulgar Latin *cantas "you sing" has a stem cant- "sing" and an ending -as "you X". The verb's ending shares information about the person (1st, 2nd or 3rd) and number (singular or plural) of its subject. It also contains a thematic vowel, which hints at its Latin conjugation (verb group). The four conjugations: I (thematic a), II (thematic e), III (thematic ĕ), IV (thematic i). A few languages (notably French) have come to expect subject pronouns with verbs: French 'je chante' but not just *'chante' for "I sing". Latin, Vulgar Latin and the majority of modern Roma...

What is BRITISH LATIN? What does BRITISH LATIN mean? BRITISH LATIN meaning, definition & explanation. British Latin or British Vulgar Latin was the Vulgar Latin spoken in Great Britain in the Roman and sub-Roman periods. While Britain formed part of the Roman Empire, Latin became the principal language of the elite, especially in the more Romanized southern and eastern parts of the island. However, it never substantially replaced the Brittonic language of the indigenous Britons, especially in the less Romanized north and west. In recent years, scholars have debated the extent to which British Latin was distinguishable from its continental counterparts, which developed into the Romance languages. With the end of Roman rule, Latin was displaced as a spoken language by Old English in most...

marriage (n.) Look up marriage at Dictionary.com c. 1300, "action of marrying, entry into wedlock;" also "state or condition of being husband and wife, matrimony, wedlock;" from Old French mariage "marriage; dowry" (12c.), from Vulgar Latin *maritaticum (11c.), from Latin maritatus, past participle of maritatre "to wed, marry, give in marriage" (see marry (v.)). The Vulgar Latin word also is the source of Italian maritaggio, Spanish maridaje. Meaning "a union of a man and woman for life by marriage, a particular matrimonial union" is early 14c. Meanings "the marriage vow, formal declaration or contract by which two join in wedlock;" also "a wedding, celebration of a marriage; the marriage ceremony" are from late 14c. Figurative use (non-theological) "intimate union, a joining as if by ma...

Traffic on roads may consist of pedestrians, ridden or herded animals, vehicles, streetcars, buses and other conveyances, either singly or together, while using the public way for purposes of travel. The word traffic originally meant "trade" (as it still does) and comes from the Old Italian verb trafficare and noun traffico. The origin of the Italian words is unclear. Suggestions include Catalan trafegar 'decant', an assumed Vulgar Latin verb transfricare 'rub across', an assumed Vulgar Latin combination of trans- and facere 'make or do', Arabic tafriq 'distribution', and Arabic taraffaqa, which can mean 'seek profit'.
