Created in 1953, "The American Road" is an epic documentary that tells both the history of the automobile in America and the story of the Ford Motor Company. Drawing on the Company's vast archive of films -- Henry Ford spent a great deal of time and money having crews film life in everyday America -- the movie shows how mass production of the automobile transformed life in America. The film was written by Joseph March, directed by George Stoney, narrated by Raymond Massey and one of the cinematographers is Robert Downey Sr. The film features images of Henry Ford, his wife Clara Ford, son Edsel, Henry Ford II, Benson Ford, Harvey Firestone, Barney Oldfield and others. The movie's score was by Alex North, the famed composer.
The modern end segment of the film showing highways and the Golden Gate Bridge -- which here appears in black and white -- was actually updated several times over the life of the film (this one apparently dates to the 1970s). You can see it in color elsewhere on this channel.
We encourage viewers to add comments and, especially, to provide additional information about our videos by adding a comment! See something interesting? Tell people what it is and what they can see by writing something for example like: "01:00:12:00 -- President Roosevelt is seen meeting with Winston Churchill at the Quebec Conference."
This film is part of the Periscope Film LLC archive, one of the largest historic military, transportation, and aviation stock footage collections in the USA. Entirely film backed, this material is available for licensing in 24p HD and 2k. For more information visit http://www.PeriscopeFilm.com

The Ford Model A of 1928–1931 (also colloquially called the A-Model Ford or the A, and A-bone among rodders and customizers) was the second huge success for the Ford Motor Company, after its predecessor, the Model T. First produced on October 20, 1927, but not sold until December 2, it replaced the venerable Model T, which had been produced for 18 years. This new Model A (a previous model had used the name in 1903–1904) was designated as a 1928 model and was available in four standard colors.
By 4 February 1929, one million Model As had been sold, and by 24 July, two million. The range of body styles ran from the Tudor at US$500 (in grey, green, or black) to the Town Car with a dual cowl at US$1200. In March 1930, Model A sales hit three million, and there were nine body styles available.
The Model A was produced through 1931. When production ended in March, 1932, there were 4,849,340 Model As made in all styles. Its successor was the Model B, which featured an updated 4-cylinder engine, as well as the Model 18 which introduced Ford's new flathead (sidevalve) V8 engine...
Features
Prices for the Model A ranged from US$385 for a roadster to $1400 for the top-of-the-line Town Car. The engine was a water-cooled L-head 4-cylinder with a displacement of 201 cu in (3.3 l). This engine provided 40 hp (30 kW; 41 PS). Top speed was around 65 mph (105 km/h). The Model A had a 103.5 in (2,630 mm) wheelbase with a final drive ratio of 3.77:1. The transmission was a conventional 3-speed sliding gear manual unsynchronised unit with a single speed reverse. The Model A had 4-wheel mechanical drum brakes. The 1930 and 1931 editions came with stainless steel radiator cowling and headlamp housings.
The Model A came in a wide variety of styles: Coupe (Standard and Deluxe), Business Coupe, Sport Coupe, Roadster Coupe (Standard and Deluxe), Convertible Cabriolet, Convertible Sedan, Phaeton (Standard and Deluxe), Tudor Sedan (Standard and Deluxe), Town Car, Fordor (2-window) (Standard and Deluxe), Fordor (3-window) (Standard and Deluxe), Victoria, Station Wagon, Taxicab, Truck, and Commercial.
The Model A was the first Ford to use the standard set of driver controls with conventional clutch and brake pedals; throttle and gearshift. Previous Ford models used controls that had become uncommon to drivers of other makes...

The following information is from a newspaper article in the summer of 1953 - likely Canandaigua's 'Daily Messenger'.
The article started with: "Mr. and Mrs. Everett Blazey of the Rochester Road and members of the family are the central characters in a 16mm color film being made on the Blazey farm for the Ford Motor Company.
This film entitled "The American Farmer" is being made by NPO Productions of New York for inclusion in the Ford Motor Company's series, "Americans at Home". With one exception the entire cast is made up of the Blazey family and their neighbors.
William (Tony) Imof, a non-professional actor from New York will be included in portions of the film. (The article further describes how the 600 acre Blazey farm nearly fit the requirements for the film.)
The Blazey farm produces cash crops such as peas, hay, grain, dry beans and sweet and field corn and usually carries between 50 to 100 Holstein heifer feeders.
The 30 minute movie will show the everyday activities of Mr. and Mrs. Blazey ; their son Everett Jr., who farms as a partner of his father; a younger son, Edward; and a daughter Roberta. The Blazey's have two other daughters, Mrs. William Borncamp and Mrs. Richard E. Hook whose homes are both near Cheshire.
Long active in community affairs and farm association work, Mr. Blazey holds the following offices; a member of the executive committee of the Ontario County Farm Bureau; president of the Ontario County Agricultural Society and a director of the Farm and Home Bureau and 4-H Club Association. In addition, he is vice president of the Farmers Production Credit Association, a director of Thompson Hospital, a Justice of the Peace in the Town of Farmington, a member of the advisory committee of the Canandaigua Office of the Lincoln Rochester Trust Company and a director of the Genessee Valley Regional Marketing Authority.
He is also a trustee of the Perinton Methodist Church. His hobby is flying his own light plane and he is a member of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association and a charter member of the New York State Flying Farmers Associations.
Fully as active, Mrs. Blazey is chairman of the County Home Bureau Executive Committee, a member of the executive committee of the county 4-H Clubs, former chairman of the Mertensia Home Bureau Unit and leader of the Jolly Homemakers 4-H Club of which her daughter, Roberta is vice president. She is also active in church and Red Cross work.
When the film is completed and edited Mr. Baer (unit manager for NPO Productions) indicated that up to 200 copies will be available through Ford dealers and through other usual channels of distribution for 16 mm movies.
With favourable weather, Peasley Bond, unit cameraman, expects to complete operations by Aug 15. Including wives and children 11 members of the NPO production unit are staying at the Greenwood Inn, East Lake Road, Canandaigua.
About this YouTube Movie.
A digital copy of this film was provided to me via Roberta Blazey a few years ago. It was digitized from a VHS film and hence lost much of the original 16mm quality. However, the story is there and the audio quality is quite good.
My mother, Olive (Mrs. Richard E. Hook) told me part of the later parts of the film were captured in Alberta because the harvest had past at the Blazey farm. Also, interestingly enough, parts of the thunderstorm were enhanced when a local water truck sprayed water over the roof of the house to simulate a downpour. Special effects…way back in 1953.
As a student in Canandaigua Elementary school I can remember seeing this filmed played over the years in our school auditorium. I was always proud of those days - in the mid to late 1960s.
Mr. and Mrs. Everett Blazey are now deceased as well as Everett Jr. Edward Blazey lives with his wife Mary in Lima, New York. Robert and her husband Patrick live in Canandaigua. Joan Borncamp (nee Blazey) lives in Canandaigua and Olive Hook (nee Blazey) lives in Kingston, Ontario Canada.

A cowboy is an animal herder who tends cattle on ranches in North America, traditionally on horseback, and often performs a multitude of other ranch-related tasks. The historic American cowboy of the late 19th century arose from the vaquero traditions of northern Mexico and became a figure of special significance and legend. A subtype, called a wrangler, specifically tends the horses used to work cattle. In addition to ranch work, some cowboys work for or participate in rodeos. Cowgirls, first defined as such in the late 19th century, had a less-well documented historical role, but in the modern world have established the ability to work at virtually identical tasks and obtained considerable respect for their achievements. There are also cattle handlers in many other parts of the world, particularly South America and Australia, who perform work similar to the cowboy in their respective nations.
The cowboy has deep historic roots tracing back to Spain and the earliest European settlers of the Americas. Over the centuries, differences in terrain, climate and the influence of cattle-handling traditions from multiple cultures created several distinct styles of equipment, clothing and animal handling. As the ever-practical cowboy adapted to the modern world, the cowboy's equipment and techniques also adapted to some degree, though many classic traditions are still preserved today...

Hereford (cattle) is a beef cattle breed, widely used both in intemperate areas and temperate areas, mainly for meat production.
Originally from Herefordshire, England, United Kingdom, more than five million pedigree Hereford cattle now exist in over 50 countries. The Hereford cattle export trade began from United Kingdom in 1817, starting in Kentucky, United States, spreading across the United States and Canada through Mexico to the great beef-raising countries of South America. Today, Hereford cattle dominate the world scene from Australasia to the Russian steppes. They can be found in Israel, Japan and throughout continental Europe and Scandinavia.
They are found in the temperate parts of Canada, the United States and Russia, as well as the temperate parts of Australia, the centre and east of Argentina, in Uruguay, and New Zealand, where they make up the largest proportion of registered cattle. They originally found great popularity among ranchers of the American Southwest, testament to the hardiness of the breed; while originating in cool, moist Britain, they have proven to thrive in much harsher climates on nearly every continent.
The World Hereford Council is based in the United Kingdom; the Secretary General, Mrs. Jan Wills, is from New Zealand. There are currently 17 member countries with 20 Hereford societies and 10 nonmember countries, with a total of eight societies...

This astonishing travelogue created by the Ford Motor Company shows a trip across the world made by two intrepid men and their brand new 1958 Ford Fairline, across continental Europe and Asia -- a trip that would be virtually impossible today. The journey was part of the World Highways Expedition of 1957. The film starts in Dearborn, Michigan where two Danny Ames and Phil Remy depart on a trip around the world, through sixteen countries and 15,000 miles of road. It starts with a drive to New York and then departure aboard the ship SS New York to London, then to Paris by airplane. The real journey then begins from Switzerland, across the Alps to Portofino, Italy, Pisa, Venice and Rome. The trip then continues through Yugoslavia, Athens, Greece and Istanbul, Turkey. Now the trip enters an incredible phase, including a drive across Anatolia, Iran and the Hindu Kush, Afghanistan. In this section the Buddhas of Bamiyan are seen. The journey continues through Lahore, Pakistan, India, Thailand and Angkor Wat, Cambodia. The film ends with a visit to Saigon, Vietnam and a boat crossing to San Francisco and back to Dearborn, Michigan.
The director of the film Kevin McClory served as the location director for Michael Todd on "Around the World in Eighty Days".
Inspired by the film Around the World in Eighty Days, the Ford Motor Company hired Filmways in New York to produce a series of commercials and a documentary about two guys driving a new 1958 Ford from LeHavre, France, across Europe, through Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India and on to Saigon. To realize this task required a caravan of five vehicles: two identical Fords (in case one couldn't make it), two small trucks—one packed with spare parts and the other with a generator for lighting and camping gear for the rough, remote areas of the trip; a station wagon carried the camera equipment with refrigeration for the film stock. Personnel consisted of 18 men: 5 drivers, each an expert in some mechanical area, 2 camera crews, a still photographer, a doctor, a navigator, a J. Walter Thompson ad agency guy, and rotating interpreters from each country.
"One Road," Mr. McClory explained in a New York Times article, is the color-film record of the World Highways Expedition, an automobile and truck caravan, which he headed for Filmways, a local television and commercial film production company. The twenty-two-man crew, he said, "landed in Saigon on July 15 and by Oct. 31 we had driven through Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Malaya, Burma, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran, Turkey, Greece, Yugoslavia, Italy, Switzerland, France and England."
"One Road," the producer-director elaborated, "could be called a travelogue but this is too prosaic a word to describe it. We shot enough stuff, I think, to prove our point that these places can be traveled through by car and, more importantly, that it soberly and honestly adds to our knowledge of these wonderfully cooperative peoples. I feel we show both the countries and the people in a respectable light."
The Ford Fairlane was an automobile model sold between 1955 and 1970 by the Ford Motor Company in North America. The name was taken from Henry Ford's estate, Fair Lane, near Dearborn, Michigan.
The Buddhas of Bamiyan were two 6th-century monumental statues of standing buddha carved into the side of a cliff in the Bamyan valley in the Hazarajat region of central Afghanistan, 230 km (140 mi) northwest of Kabul at an altitude of 2,500 meters (8,200 feet). Built in 507 AD (smaller) and 554 AD (larger), the statues represented the classic blended style of Gandhara art.
They were dynamited and destroyed in March 2001 by the Taliban, on orders from leader Mullah Mohammed Omar, after the Taliban government declared that they were idols.

The city of Detroit, the largest city in the state of Michigan, developed from a small fur trading post of New France to a world-class industrial powerhouse and the fourth largest American city by the mid 20th century. The city, settled in 1701, is the first European settlement above tidewater in North America.[3] After a devastating fire in 1805, Augustus B. Woodward devised a street plan similar to Pierre Charles L'Enfant's design for Washington, D.C. Detroit's monumental avenues and traffic circles fan out in radial fashion from Campus Martius Park in the heart of the city, which facilitates traffic patterns along the city's tree-lined boulevards and parks. Main thoroughfares radiate outward from the city center like spokes in a wheel.
During the 19th century, Detroit grew into a thriving hub of commerce and industry, and the city spread along Jefferson Avenue, with multiple manufacturing firms taking advantage of the transportation resources afforded by the river and a parallel rail line. In the late 19th century several Gilded Age mansions were built just east of Detroit's current downtown. Detroit was referred to by some as the Paris of the West for its architecture, and for Washington Boulevard, recently electrified by Thomas Edison.Throughout the 20th century various skyscrapers were built centered on Detroit's downtown.
Following World War II, the auto industry boomed and the metropolitan area became one of the largest in the United States. Immigrants and migrants have contributed significantly to Detroit's economy and culture. In the 1990s and the new millennium, the city has experienced increased revitalization. Many areas of the city are listed in the National Register of Historic Places and include National Historic Landmarks.

John Wilkes Booth (May 10, 1838 – April 26, 1865) was an American stage actor who assassinated President Abraham Lincoln at Ford's Theatre, in Washington, D.C., on April 14, 1865. Booth was a member of the prominent 19th-century Booth theatrical family from Maryland and, by the 1860s, was a well-known actor.[1] He was also a Confederate sympathizer, vehement in his denunciation of Lincoln, and was strongly opposed to the abolition of slavery in the United States.[2]
Booth and a group of co-conspirators originally plotted to kidnap Lincoln, but later planned to kill him, Vice President Andrew Johnson, and Secretary of State William H. Seward in a bid to help the Confederacy's cause.[3] Although Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia had surrendered four days earlier, Booth believed the American Civil War was not yet over because Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston's army was still fighting the Union Army. Of the conspirators, only Booth was completely successful in carrying out his respective part of the plot. Booth shot Lincoln once in the back of the head. The President died the next morning. Seward was severely wounded but recovered. Vice-President Johnson was never attacked at all.
Following the assassination, Booth fled on horseback to southern Maryland, eventually making his way to a farm in rural northern Virginia 12 days later, where he was tracked down. Booth's companion gave himself up, but Booth refused and was shot by a Union soldier after the barn in which he was hiding was set ablaze. Eight other conspirators or suspects were tried and convicted, and four were hanged shortly thereafter.
After Lincoln's landslide re-election in early November 1864 on a platform advocating passage of the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution to abolish slavery altogether,[88] Booth devoted increasing energy and money to his kidnap plot.[89][90] He assembled a loose-knit band of Southern sympathizers, including David Herold, George Atzerodt, Lewis Powell (also known as Lewis Payne or Paine), and John Surratt, a rebel agent.[82][91] They began to meet routinely at the boarding house of Surratt's mother, Mrs. Mary Surratt.[91]
By this time, Booth was arguing so vehemently with his older, pro-Union brother Edwin about Lincoln and the war that Edwin finally told him he was no longer welcome at his New York home. Booth also railed against Lincoln in conversations with his sister Asia, saying, "That man's appearance, his pedigree, his coarse low jokes and anecdotes, his vulgar similes, and his policy are a disgrace to the seat he holds. He is made the tool of the North, to crush out slavery."[92] As the Confederacy's defeat became more certain in 1865, Booth decried the end of slavery and Lincoln's election to a second term, "making himself a king", the actor fumed, in "wild tirades", his sister recalled.[93]
Booth attended Lincoln's second inauguration on March 4 as the invited guest of his secret fiancée, Lucy Hale. In the crowd below were Powell, Atzerodt, and Herold. There was no attempt to assassinate Lincoln during the inauguration. Later, however, Booth remarked about his "excellent chance ... to kill the President, if I had wished."[78]
On March 17, Booth learned that Lincoln would be attending a performance of the play Still Waters Run Deep at a hospital near the Soldier's Home. Booth assembled his team on a stretch of road near the Soldier's Home in the attempt to kidnap Lincoln en route to the hospital, but the president did not appear.[94] Booth later learned that Lincoln had changed his plans at the last moment to attend a reception at the National Hotel in Washington where, coincidentally, Booth was then staying.

United States President Abraham Lincoln was shot on Good Friday, April 14, 1865, while attending the play Our American Cousin at Ford's Theatre as the American Civil War was drawing to a close.[1] The assassination occurred five days after the commander of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia, General Robert E. Lee, surrendered to Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant and the Union Army of the Potomac.
Lincoln was the first American president to be assassinated.[2] An unsuccessful attempt had been made on Andrew Jackson 30 years before in 1835, and Lincoln had himself been the subject of an earlier assassination attempt by an unknown assailant in August 1864. The assassination of Lincoln was planned and carried out by the well-known stage actor John Wilkes Booth, as part of a larger conspiracy in a bid to revive the Confederate cause.
Booth's co-conspirators were Lewis Powell and David Herold, who were assigned to kill Secretary of State William H. Seward, and George Atzerodt who was tasked to kill Vice President Andrew Johnson. By simultaneously eliminating the top three people in the administration, Booth and his co-conspirators hoped to sever the continuity of the United States government.
Lincoln was shot while watching the play Our American Cousin with his wife Mary Todd Lincoln at Ford's Theatre in Washington, D.C.. He died early the next morning. The rest of the conspirators' plot failed; Powell only managed to wound Seward, while Atzerodt, Johnson's would-be assassin, lost his nerve and fled. The funeral and burial of Abraham Lincoln was a period of national mourning.

In late 1860, Booth had been initiated in the pro-Confederate Knights of the Golden Circle in Baltimore.
In March 1864, Ulysses S. Grant, the commanding general of all the Union's armies, decided to suspend the exchange of prisoners-of-war. As harsh as it may have been on the prisoners of both sides, Grant realized the exchange was prolonging the war by returning soldiers to the outnumbered and manpower-starved South. John Wilkes Booth, a Southerner and outspoken Confederate sympathizer, conceived a plan to kidnap President Lincoln and deliver him to the Confederate Army, to be held hostage until the North agreed to resume exchanging prisoners.[5]:130–134 Booth recruited Samuel Arnold, George Atzerodt, David Herold, Michael O'Laughlen, Lewis Powell (also known as "Lewis Paine"), and John Surratt to help him. Surratt's mother, Mary Surratt, left her tavern in Surrattsville, Maryland, and moved to a house in Washington, D.C., where Booth became a frequent visitor.
While Booth and Lincoln did not know each other, Lincoln did know about Booth and enjoyed watching him perform at Ford's Theatre.
Lincoln watched Booth perform in numerous plays, including one called the Marble Heart at Ford's Theatre on November 9, 1863. The Washington Chronicle called it a "beautiful emotional play" and Booth earned rave reviews for his role in the production. According to the book Lincoln's Sanctuary: Abraham Lincoln and the Soldiers' Home, Lincoln enjoyed Booth's performance so much he sent a note backstage inviting him to the White House so they could meet. Booth, a rebel sympathizer and Confederate spy, evaded the president's invitation. Booth didn't give Lincoln a specific reason why he couldn't visit but he later told his friends "I would rather have the applause of a Negro to that of the president!" According to the book Inside Lincoln's White House, the actor Frank Mordaunt later corroborated this story:
"Lincoln was an admirer of the man who assassinated him. I know that, for he said to me one day that there was a young actor over in Ford's Theater whom he desired to meet, but that the actor had on one pretext or another avoided any invitations to visit the White House. That actor was John Wilkes Booth."
Booth attended Lincoln's second inauguration on March 4, 1865, as the invited guest of his secret fiancée Lucy Hale, daughter of John P. Hale, soon to become United States Ambassador to Spain. Booth afterwards wrote in his diary, "What an excellent chance I had, if I wished, to kill the President on Inauguration day!"
On March 17, 1865, Booth informed his conspirators that Lincoln would be attending a play, Still Waters Run Deep, at Campbell Military Hospital. He assembled his men in a restaurant at the edge of town, intending that they should soon join him on a nearby stretch of road in order to capture the President on his way back from the hospital. But Booth found out that Lincoln had not gone to the play after all. Instead, he had attended a ceremony at the National Hotel in which officers of the 142nd Indiana Infantry presented Governor Oliver Morton with a captured Confederate battle flag.[5]:185 Booth was living at the National Hotel at the time and could have had an opportunity to kill Lincoln had Booth not been at the hospital.
Meanwhile, the Confederacy was falling apart. On April 3, Richmond, Virginia, the Confederate capital, fell to the Union army. On April 9, 1865, the Army of Northern Virginia, the main army of the Confederacy, surrendered to the Army of the Potomac at Appomattox Court House. Confederate President Jefferson Davis and the rest of his government were in full flight. Despite many Southerners giving up hope, Booth continued to believe in his cause.
