Seeing Cell Division Like Never Before
Using a combination of fluorescent microscopy and cutting-edge cryo-electron tomography, researchers in the labs of Luke Chao and Tom Bernhardt in the Blavatnik Institute at Harvard Medical School have provided never-before-seen views of double-membraned bacteria as they divide.
The work offers new insights into the division process and may aid in the fight against antibiotic resistance, since these drugs typically target bacteria as they divide, when the cell wall and membranes are weakest.
Led by postdoctoral research fellows Paula Navarro and Andrea Vettiger, the two groups made the discoveries possible by combining their expertise in bacterial cell division, bacterial genetics, and cutting-edge imaging.
Results were published Sept. 12 in Nature Microbiology.

Animal Cell | #aumsum #kids #science #education #children
Animal Cell.
The Animal cell is surrounded by a semi-permeable cell membrane.
The cell membrane allows only specific materials to move in and out of the cell.
The different parts of the cell are called organelles. Nucleus, Mitochondria, Endoplasmic Reticulum, Golgi Apparatus, Lysosomes.
The cytoplasm is a jelly like substance. Cytoplasm provides a surface for all the organelles in the animal cell.
Nucleus being the control center of cell decides and controls most of the functions going on in the cell.
Mitochondria are the sites for cellular respiration in cells. They are the powerhouses of the cell because they release energy rich compounds called ATP.
ATP is needed for the functioning, growth and maintenance of the body.
Let us now study about the endoplasmic reticulum.
The endoplasmic re...

Killer T cell attacking cancer
Cambridge University's Under the Microscope is a collection of videos that show glimpses of the natural and man-made world in stunning close-up. Check out the rest of the series here: http://bit.ly/A6bwCE
In this video we see a killer T cell of the immune system attacking a cancer cell.
Professor Gillian Griffiths:
"Cells of the immune system protect the body against pathogens. If cells in our bodies are infected by viruses, or become cancerous, then killer cells of the immune system identify and destroy the affected cells. Cytotoxic T cells are very precise and efficient killers. They are able to destroy infected or cancerous cells, without destroying healthy cells surrounding them.

The endoplasmic reticulum is a large network of membrane bound sheets. They help in transporting and exchanging materials between the various regions of the cytoplasm.
The endoplasmic reticulum is of two types:
The smooth endoplasmic reticulum
The rough endoplasmic reticulum.
The smooth endoplasmic reticulum helps in the formation of lipids.
Lipids are essential components of the cell membrane.
The rough endoplasmic reticulum has ribosomes. Ribosomes help in building proteins in the rough endoplasmic reticulum.
The protein is processed inside the golgi apparatus. The proteins are packaged and sent outside.
The golgi apparatus is involved in the formation of lysosomes.
The lysosomes contain powerful digestive enzymes that help in cell digestion.
When the cell is damaged, the lysosome bursts. After the lysosome bursts, digestive enzymes get released. The digestive enzymes digest their own cell. Hence, lysosomes are called suicide bags of the cell.

The Wellcome Trust funded laboratory of Professor Gillian Griffiths, at the Cambridge Institute for Medical Research, investigates just how this is accomplished. By understanding how this works, we can develop ways to control killer cells. This will allow us to find ways to improve cancer therapies, and ameliorate autoimmune diseases caused when killer cells run amok and attack healthy cells in our bodies."
Cytotoxic T cells are just 10 microns in length: approximately one-tenth the width of a human hair. These movies are 92 times real time.
The original footage shown was made by Alex Ritter, a PhD student on the NIH-OxCam programme, in the laboratory of Professor Gillian Griffiths at the Cambridge Institute for Medical Research and the Department of Medicine of the Clinical School of the University of Cambridge. The images were acquired using an Andor Revolution spinning disk system with an Olympus microscope. Professor Griffiths is a Wellcome Trust Principal Research Fellow.

How to use Spreadsheets (part 1)
Spreadsheets are probably the most useful business tool you'll ever use. They can be used for a huge range of tasks from accounts through to quotations, invoices, stock management and pretty much everything to do with the day-to-day operations of a small business. The only folk telling you not to use spreadsheets are those who sell software that probably isn't as good as a spreadsheet :-). A few folk asked about some very basic Microsoft Excel spreadsheet training so here you go! Just covering the absolute fundamentals in this one. Please post any questions in the comments.

The tutorial includes examples of professional and beautiful Excel reports that follow these design principles.

But a little formatting goes a long way. The good news is "less is more" so it really doesn't take much effort to get this right. If you have the proper structure in place as shown at the beginning of the video, the rest will be easily done. Remember: "Organize before you serve".
Putting into practice and making a habit of as many of the Excel spreadsheet design principles outlined in this video will elevate your spreadsheets far above those around you. Who knows; it could be the reason for your next promotion!
