95 percent of treatment centers in the United states use methods that contradict evidence. People addicted to opiods or heroin, usually enter an expensive detox center that keeps them for a few days.
After detox, part of the heroin addicts recovery usually includes a basic 12 step program. However, several studies reveal that 12 step programs have around a 3 to 15 % percent success rate, depending on which study you look at.
Professionals know that addicts can be in and out of rehabs over 10 times. The research is clear. The acute treatment of addiction produces very low success rates.
So what is the best heroin addiction treatment?
The best thing to do is to use methods that are supported by science, evidence and research. Using elements of mindful meditation and certain behavioral and cognitive training techniques have been shown by studies to reduce the frequency and intensity of cravings, relapse and withdrawal symptoms. The primary neurotransmitter affected are the endorphins which are the brains natural pain killing compounds. What heroin does is artificially stimulates the Endorphin receptors within the brain. This results in the brain sending a false signal that there are plenty of endorphins and that the brain's requirements for protein is satisfied. This is why many heroin addicts loose weight, they do not aware of when they need to eat. Research shows that they become nutritionally deficient because of this.
Because heroin affects the production of the body's natural neurotransmitters that kill pain, this can lead to long-term pain because the brain reacts in a defensive way to the spike of neurotransmitters from the long-term use of heroin. A very effective way to combat addiction is to use a holistic addiction treatment that is backed by science. The best thing for anyone to do with an addiction problem is to use science based techniques that rewire the brain and body out of habit loops so that the addiction is no longer necessary.

Addiction
Addiction is a state characterized by compulsive engagement in rewarding stimuli, despite adverse consequences. It can be thought of as a disease or biological process leading to such behaviors. The two properties that characterize all addictive stimuli are that they are reinforcing (i.e., they increase the likelihood that a person will seek repeated exposure to them) and intrinsically rewarding (i.e., something perceived as being positive or desirable).

Okay so next time your are having a craving. Instead of acting out on it. Observe the craving. Put the spot light on it. What does it feel like. Analyze it. You may start to notice once you consciously become aware of it and analyze it, it starts to fade. Realize that it is a false message sent from the brain. Addiction depletes neurotransmitters (or natural chemicals) in the brain. It also throws off the homeostatic state of the brain. But neurotransmitters are synthesized by nutrients.
Heroin is a class of drugs called opioids. This class of drugs also include morphine, codeine and methadone. The primary neurotransmitter affected are the endorphins which are the brains natural pain killing compounds. What heroin does is artificially stimulates the Endorphin receptors within the brain. This results in the brain sending a false signal that there are plenty of endorphins and that the brain's requirements for protein is satisfied. This is why many heroin addicts loose weight, they do not aware of when they need to eat. Research shows that they become nutritionally deficient because of this.
Because heroin affects the production of the body's natural neurotransmitters that kill pain, this can lead to long-term pain because the brain reacts in a defensive way to the spike of neurotransmitters from the long-term use of heroin. But the brain is malleable. It can change and rewire. Certain cognitive techniques have shown to change the brain.

Okay so next time your are having a craving. Instead of acting out on it. Observe the craving. Put the spot light on it. What does it feel like. Analyze it. You may start to notice once you consciously become aware of it and analyze it, it starts to fade. Realize that it is a false message sent from the brain. But basically, learning how to change the relationship you have with your cravings, or urges or intrusive thoughts, the more your brain starts to rewire and the cravings dissipate. No matter how many cravings. You are in control.
