9th CONFIGURATION
I arrive at the asylum, a makeshift funny farm
An old abandoned castle where Section 8’s can do no harm
I’ve been sent here on assignment, the new doctor in charge
To analyze the patients; to see who’s real and who’s a fraud
(Then there’s you) the paparazzi’s favorite, (Captain) the schizo-astronaut
(One day) you lost your marbles in the capsule, right before it was ready for lift off
O, Captain, why are you afraid of the Moon?
Tell me your secret; I’ll share mine with you
Why did you refuse?
Le Voyage dans la Lune
You broke out of the castle; got lost into the night
You found a little biker-bar where you thought that you could hide
The King of The Angels recognized the superstar
The Demons and The Horsemen broke you like some cheap guitar
(Then there’s you) they called me to come save you, (Captain) my battered astronaut
(One day) Twinkle, twinkle Killer Kane came out; killed every biker on the lot
O, Captain, why are you afraid of the Moon?
Tell me your secret; I’ll share mine with you
Why did you refuse?
Le Voyage dans la Lune …dans la Lune, dans la Lune
(Then there’s you) you will find your marbles (Captain); get permission to take off
(One day) your status reinstated to ride on that Galactic-Molotov
Now, give me your Saint’s Medallion and just a little time
I will prove to you and the whole world there is pure-self-sacrifice
O, Captain, why are you afraid of the Moon?
Now, tell me your secret, I’ve shared mine with you
O, Captain, My Captain, please tell me the truth
What kind of spaceman is afraid of the Moon?
Why did you refuse? It’s only the Moon
Why did you refuse?

What is real? What is imaginary? Is the distinction just in our mind?
“Illusion” is an immersive interactive installation about the art of seeing and experiencing, created by awarded filmmakers and visual artists Laia Cabrera and Isabelle Duverger in collaboration with interactivity designer Aniol Saurina Masó, that offers the chance to step into an illusion of infinite space.
The piece departs from the notion of “visual illusions”, a powerful means by which to challenge our mind and the inner and subjective approach to time and space. Through projection mapping, mirrors, augmented reality, interactivity, video art, music and animation, we invite our audience to experience a sensorial journey onto magical realms and thought-provoking realities. “Illusion” is a mirage, a playful art installation that blurs the line between true and false, merging the physical and digital worlds.
In “Illusion”, we are creating a sense of proximity with elements we are used to be surrounded by, contrasting with how differently we relate to them. We are awakening the senses as the audience plays with fire, water, energy, switching viewpoint from being inside to being above, transitioning to breaking walls (symbolically and literally), opening doors to unexpected landscapes, from the universe to the infinitesimal and interacting at all time with them. "Illusion" is an experiential art installation where mirrors also play the role of breaking the rules of gravity.
In this infinity mirrored room, one can travel from an animated urban landscape, breaking walls to unleash the beauty and power of nature, sea waves, forest and fireflies, a peaceful escape room to aerial views of the Mediterranean coast, paint and ink creating abstract forms that evoke the connection between micro and macro, neons that react to your movements creating shapes, and words that remind us about the meaning of illusion, a mirage but also a trill and hope.

Spring Break Art Show, as part of Armory Arts Week, 4 Times Square, New York, NY March 6-12, 2018
“This room is magic. Walk in and touch the black dots to discover a mysterious world of dreams, fantasy and hidden places”
In 'Self On The Shelf', filmmaker and videoartist Laia Cabrera and animator and video mapper Isabelle Duverger co-created an interactive immersive installation for Spring Break Art Show, as part of the Armory Arts Week, turning a small boy's bedroom into a nightmarish dreamscape in honor of the eponymous elf which has become the symbol of our children's intimate acceptance of 21st century surveillance realities.
Through immersive interactive projection mapping, video art, sound design, illustration and animation, Laia Cabrera and Isabelle Duverger, in collaboration with interaction designer Nicola Carpeggiani, created a child's bedroom and bring it to life as it responded to a series of clues or hints, which were given to visitors as they entered the room.
Extracted from a 2012 journal entry about Chris' son and his relationship with James, his first Elf on the Shelf, the concept of this stranger from the North Pole was born. The dramatic visual effects transformed the room as the viewer explored feelings, emotions and limits between reality and fantasy.
There were black dots hidden on various objects in the room which the audience had to find. Once the viewer touched the objects, the room-its walls, the music, the entire environment transformed. If you touched the glass by the side of the bed, you were suddenly immersed inside the water. If you touched the mirror, your reflection was broadcast through clouds on multiple walls, from different angles so that the viewer was literally stunned as they tried to figure out where the camera was located.
Reviews:
Watering the Imagination at the Spring Break Art Show
"Several other exhibitions were visually compelling or inventive, or so fully realized that I couldn’t help but spend the necessary time to suss out their meanings. The show Self on the Shelf was one of those technology-driven extravaganzas, when I touched a black dot on a quotidian furnishing in what was designed to look like a bedroom, the whole scene shifted and music and images wafting across the walls made me feel like by touching the button, I had entered a wormhole."
Seph Rodney for Hyperallergic, March 8, 2018
Our 21 Favorite Moments From SPRING/BREAK Art Show
"This year’s theme, “Stranger Comes to Town,” explores tensions of otherness, through concepts of migration, assimilation, and the nature of belonging. We’ve selected some of our favorite booths, moments and encounters at this year’s show:

Politics, Strangers & Art Not to Miss at Spring/Break 2018
“Self on The Shelf” by Laia Cabrera and Isabelle Duverger. Curated by Christine Miele.
"Self on The Shelf was a distinct departure from the installations and room presentations that dominated the fair. Presenting as a child's bedroom, the work was enlivened through the act of finding and pressing a black button to present a series of changing environment that combined a childlike innocence with adult self-examination that didn't scour. In an unexpected twist, the work contained a live projection component so participates could see themselves appear on the walls as part of the art installation. It's all part of the dreamlike environment and secret places that is more nice than not.
Self on The Shelf was dreamed up by a pair of visual artists with skills in projected mapping, film, video, animation and visual art. Experiencing the installation was not nearly as complicated as the list of skills needed to create the fanciful work. The work is inspired by a childhood toy by the curator's son. His "Elf on the Shelf" was a toy that was a stand in for Santa Claus and, as part of his Christmas team, could report back on whether he was naughty or nice to determine the level of gifts delivered on Christmas Eve.
The Self on The Shelf can transform into both sweet dreams or nightmares where elves take over the room or storms envelop the room. Other actions will create the room to transform into a pool, a drawing that unfolds or to place the visitor in the room as way of looking themselves in the mirror.
Overall, the installation was a fun breathe in an art fair with work that could be heavy on the heart or harsh on the eyes."

An Immersive Interactive Video Mapping and Sound Art Installation by Laia Cabrera and Isabelle Duverger
Curated by Chris Miele / Interaction by Nicola Carpeggiani

Shifting Gaze
Shifting Gaze is a film-art-music installation about choice, desire and memory conceived and directed by Laia Cabrera (filmmaker and video artist) and created in collaboration with Erica Glyn (music, composer and singer) and Isabelle Duverger (animation and mapping). Shifting Gaze is a film about identity, about making choices, a memory in act.
Drawing from the body, faces, urban patterns, nature and remains of activity, the piece explores a notion of choice, linked to desire and memory –choice being the present, memory representing the past and desire, the drive for a future. Underneath these mirrored imageries lie many stories about limits, freedom and self-perception.
"Quantum" is a series of videoart pieces about time, life and space by Laia Cabrera and Isabelle Duverger

"Lovefield" from the Videoart-Animation-Music performance "Until There: Neo-Imagery & Indie Time". A Visual Concert with Laia Cabrera, For Feather-Erica Glyn and Isabelle Duverger at Monkey Town, NYC, June 8th, 2009
with musicians Rohin Khemani, David Weintraub and Ian Riggs.
"Until There" starts with images and movement as a visual storytelling, a sensual journey of the imaginary world of the filmmaker and visual artist, Laia Cabrera. Four screens with two video streams will surround you with a unique visual experience of timelessness and human landscape. She uses a variety of media: projected imagery merging cinematic arts, dance, photography, theater, visual arts, writing etc... As a part of the performance, Laia Cabrera will be working with visuals and drawing animation by Isabelle Duverger projected live in conjunction with indie pop/rock For Feather with lead singer Erica Glyn. The band has mastered the art of turning the mundane into the marvelous. Quirky melodies pull rather than push the listener, keeping things light with spacious harmonies evoking the early Beatles.
