Stephen Oris Drew (born March 16, 1983, in Hahira, Georgia) is a shortstop in Major League Baseball who plays for the Arizona Diamondbacks. He is the younger brother of former Boston Red Sox outfielder J.D. Drew and former major leaguer Tim Drew.
Drew went to Lowndes High School in Valdosta, Georgia. Following in the footsteps of his brother, J.D., he played college baseball at Florida State University under head coach Mike Martin where he was Baseball America's Freshman of the Year, and ACC Rookie of the Year.
Drew started out in Class A+ with the Lancaster JetHawks in 2006. Drew did very well with the JetHawks batting .389 and 10 home runs. Drew would later be pulled up to Double-A and play for the Tennessee Smokies. Drew would hit .218 and 4 home runs for the Smokies. He would later be pulled up to Triple-A and play for Tucson.
Drew was selected to the 2006 All-Star Futures Game.
On July 13, 2006, during a game against the Milwaukee Brewers, Craig Counsell injured his ribs, prompting the call-up of Drew from the D-Backs Triple-A affiliate, the Tucson Sidewinders. He made his major league debut on July 15 against the Milwaukee Brewers. Also making his major league debut that day (for the Brewers), was Tony Gwynn Jr., son of former major leaguer Tony Gwynn. He would record his first major league hit against the Dodgers in a game against his brother J.D. Drew would finish the season with a .316 Batting Average, 5 HR, and 23 RBI.
Benjamin P. "Ben" Cherington (born July 14, 1974, Meriden, New Hampshire) is an American professional baseball executive, the general manager of the Boston Red Sox of Major League Baseball. On October 25, 2011, he succeeded Theo Epstein as general manager, having worked in the team's baseball operations office since 1999, before Epstein's arrival. Cherington served Boston as an area scout, baseball operations assistant, coordinator of international scouting, and assistant director (and then director) of player development from 1999–2005.
Cherington is a graduate of Amherst College where he was a member of the Gamma chapter of Psi Upsilon fraternity, and has a Masters in Sports Management from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. He was originally hired by Dan Duquette, then the Red Sox' general manager, in 1999 after spending the previous season as an advance scout for the Cleveland Indians.
From December 12, 2005, through January 19, 2006, he served as co-general manager of the team with Jed Hoyer during Epstein's absence from the team, with club president/CEO Larry Lucchino and veteran former Major League GM Bill Lajoie also playing key roles during that period. After Epstein's return, Cherington became vice president, player personnel, through January 2009, then senior vice president and assistant GM from 2009 through his promotion to executive vice president and general manager on October 25, 2011.
Dennis Callahan (c. 1941 – February 8, 2012) was an American politician from Annapolis, Maryland. He had been a mayor of Annapolis and a director of the Recreation and Parks Department of Anne Arundel County, Maryland. He ran unsuccessfully in the Democratic primary for Anne Arundel County Executive in 2006. The general election winner, Republican John R. Leopold, appointed Callahan chief administrative officer of Anne Arundel County, a position he held at the time of his death.
As director of the Recreation and Parks Department, he was at the center of two controversial park developments. One of the park developments involved the Smith Farm on the Broadneck Peninsula. The plan called for tearing down most of a horse farm and building ball fields over the land, leaving limited space for a community equestrian center. Local citizens organized against this proposal, and groups such as WHOA (We Hold Officials Accountable), SACReD (South Arundel Citizens for Responsible Development), and the Anne Arundel Green Party literally stood in front of the bulldozers to stop the farm from being torn down. Eventually the farm was preserved and is now the Andy Smith Equestrian Center.
Dustin Luis Pedroia (born August 17, 1983, in Woodland, California) is an American professional baseball second baseman. Pedroia has won several awards in Major League Baseball, including the 2007 American League Rookie of the Year and the 2008 AL MVP award. He also won a Silver Slugger as a second baseman and a Gold Glove in 2008 and 2011. He finished second overall in the AL in batting average in 2008. In addition to his offensive performance, Pedroia has been a major defensive contributor to the Red Sox.
Pedroia is listed by Major League Baseball and the Red Sox as 5' 8" (173 cm) and 165 pounds. In 2003 a USA Today article gave his height as 5' 7" (170 cm), and when he was in college the NCAA and Arizona State University gave his height as 5' 8".
Pedroia attended Woodland Senior High School in Woodland, California. Pedroia batted .445 his senior year and was chosen as his league's most valuable player. Good childhood friend and high school teamate Frankie Vartuli gave him some inspirational words before he started his college season. What was said on the rainy Thursday night during the phone conversation was, "In order to excel, you must be completely dedicated to your chosen sport. You must also be prepared to work hard and be willing to accept constructive criticism. Without one-hundred percent dedication, you won't be able to do this." Vartuli used the famous quote from Willie Mays to inspire the 5 foot 7 phenom to excel in college.
Jacoby McCabe Ellsbury ( /dʒəˈkoʊbi/ jə-KOH-bee; born September 11, 1983) is an American professional baseball center fielder with the Boston Red Sox of Major League Baseball.
Ellsbury attended Madras High School, where he was a 4-year letterman in football and baseball, and played varsity basketball his sophomore through senior years. Ellsbury's career batting average of .567 and being caught stealing only once are Oregon High School State Records. He also holds the Oregon record for stolen bases in a game, with 7. Ellsbury was first drafted by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in the 23rd round of the 2002 MLB Draft, but did not sign. He was then drafted 23rd overall by Boston in 2005, after three years at Oregon State University. Ellsbury is the only Red Sox player in history to join the 30-30 club, a feat he accomplished on September 25, 2011, against the Yankees.
Ellsbury is officially enrolled as a member of the Colorado River Indian Tribes and is the first Native American of Navajo descent to reach the Major Leagues. As of 2008, he was one of only three active non-Hispanic Native American players in Major League Baseball, along with Kyle Lohse of the St. Louis Cardinals and Joba Chamberlain of the New York Yankees. Ellsbury is English and German on his paternal side.
