Bewteen 2000-2009, I lost the 3 most important people in my life: my partner, my mother and my grandmother. In 2007 I decided to take a much needed time out from life and moved back to my hometown primarily to grieve the loss of my partner and mother and to spend time with my grandmother, who was dealing with major complications from diabetes. In 2009, RuPaul’s Drag Race season 1 came on the air and it was a great way to lose myself into laughter after dealing with such heavy issues in my life. It was also a period in my life where for the first time I had time to invest into my own artistic interests. I started teaching myself photography, video editing and most importantly, music/sound production. One of the main ways I taught myself music skills was remixing Drag Race alumni’s musical releases. I have always had particular taste in music so whenever one of the queens released a single, I saw it as a challenge to reconstruct their tracks and put my own twist on it seeing I don't have typical musical tastes. In no way was I trying to make the originals sound better nor did I ever have the ambition to be some great producer etc. I try to help people understand that it's my version of "Fan Art". It's my way of putting hours of editing, passion and appreciation into a musical/visual experience in hopes that it honors the artist It's intended for. A simple acknowledgement is always the best reward so naturally when it's dismissed or ignored, it's a total crush. However, the rare times I get a response, repost or direct thank you message from the occasional queen, it's the highest honor and moment of pride. Although I’ve done about 30 Drag Race remixes over the years, the only ones to give me any kind of acknowledgement were: Alaska, Gia Gunn, Laganja, Tatianna, Tommy Lee (who produced Violet Chachki’s EP) and James St. James. Alaska not only wrote me back personally to thank me, but posted my remix on her Facebook page and that day I had more youtube hits than all my videos combined. I was also impressed to see Alaska had posted a video of her track Hieee which was a compilation of her showing a variety of fan art she had been given throughout the years. When I posted my remix of Laganja Estranja's Legs, she replied with "yassss go on!" that simple comment showed that she appreciated my "fan art". Not a lot of people realize doing a fan remix is exactly that, another art form to show my appreciation. It also takes hours, days and sometimes weeks to do ONE remix with a video edited and synched to match it and one actually has to take the time to watch and listen to understand that unlike visual fan art which is an immediately consumed experience. Aside from remixing singles released by the queens, I also made a few “bitch tracks” which are (for those who don’t know) a collection of soundbites from either Drag Race, Ring My Bell and Untucked strategically set over beats I’ve constructed from scratch. Gia Gunn even gave me permission to use her name for the track I made “HDS” which was the ultimate reward. I've done one for Latrice and Detox but unfortunately they slid under the radar. Even when someone simply clicks a "like" button, although it may not seem like a lot, it could mean the world to the fan who posted their fan art so I always encourage anyone who's reached any level of success to always remember the fans who appreciate them. This was also my way of showing a different "sound" or sonic aesthetic that isn't standard when it comes to music often associated with gay culture. I have no desire to be a celebrity, a big producers nor am I seeking fame of any kind. I realize my productions are amateur still and considering I've never set foot in a studio and taught myself everything I know despite not being the most "tekky" kindof guy, all I can hope for is that my love and appreciation shines through over and above everything else.
