Meth
On the streets it is referred to as Crystal, Ice, and Crank. Methamphetamines are viciously addictive and provide the hyperactivity effects of Cocaine along with the delusional effects of LSD. As opposed to getting a short `high' from other drugs, this one will keep users pumped up from 6 to 12 hours and create feelings of paranoia, invulnerability, increased strength, euphoria, and may cause some to react in a violent fashion. As for health concerns, it rots the teeth, suppresses the appetite, induces insomnia, and causes brain damage among other things. Its ease of use makes it even more insidious as it can be swallowed, snorted, injected, or smoked and it is cheap to buy or can be easily manufactured by almost anyone.
Amphetamines can be found in virtually every community from the smallest towns to the largest cities and it radiates through all walks of life from the lowest to highest social classes. It is estimated that there are 26 million worldwide users of this drug. When law enforcement in the United States began to make a concerted effort to eliminate methamphetamine labs, supply then began to come from Mexico using routes already established by Cocaine Cartels.
The World's Most Dangerous Drug is only 50 minutes long but this is more than enough time to fully realize the shocking and devastating effects of methamphetamines. There are some graphic photos and a few disturbing video clips but they are necessary elements in complimenting and reinforcing the main message of this program. National Geographic has made a decent documentary here, and whether viewers want to watch this for educational purposes or just out of curiosity perhaps, I recommend it to everyone.

What does a meth user look like? You’re probably not picturing Courtney – and that’s one reason why it’s so important to hear his story.
In the 1990s and early 2000s, meth became the most widely used illicit drug among urban gay men. "Early characterizations of the meth problem in the gay community depicted the party boy or the middle-class white man as the prototype of the meth user," says Dr. Perry Halkitis, professor of applied psychology, global public health, and medicine at New York University.
Public health campaigns in the early 2000s targeted white gay meth users as a way of combating the AIDS epidemic. This, Halkitis believes, created a stigma among middle- and upper-class white gay men and pushed the drug underground in the gay community. And while Halkitis says meth use is still common among all subsets of the gay population, a recent study of his found meth now disproportionately affects HIV-positive and African-American gay men.
To make this short, filmmaker Spencer Macnaughton spent weeks of chatting online with many men and attending a Crystal Meth Anonymous meeting at New York's LGBT Community Center, where 38 gay male ex-meth users shared their recovery stories. Quiet towns across rural Australia are in the grip of an Ice epidemic. Major international drug cartels are working with local outlawed motorcycle gangs to push crystal meth to a captive market of children.
"It's dark. It's scary. It's dirty", says 19-year-old Aaron, a recovering Ice addict. Aaron began using when he was 15 and soon got addicted to the enormous dopamine hit, unrivalled by any other drug. He explains how at his lowest point on the drug, "I tried to hang myself in my mum's shed". Aaron's story is not unique. In the last year 350,000 Australians have smoked, snorted or injected crystal methamphetamine, and the problem is getting worse. In a community of 4,000, one in ten are using the drug. "There's been reports of 10-year-olds presenting at the Emergency Department here", says one clinical nurse. Orphan Jake saw his fortunes turn when he was recruited to deal by a motorcycle gang when he was only 11-years-old. "It was like winning the lotto or getting a licence to print money", he says. In areas with a desperate lack of treatment facilities and under resourced or non-existent police, a generation is being condemned to a life of drug abuse and crime.

Methamphetamine
Methamphetamine (contracted from N-methyl-alpha-methylphenethylamine) is a strong central nervous system (CNS) stimulant that is mainly used as a recreational drug. Methamphetamine hydrochloride is approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) under the trade name Desoxyn for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and obesity in adults and children, and is sometimes prescribed off label for narcolepsy and idiopathic hypersomnia. It is rarely prescribed due to concerns involving human neurotoxicity and its high potential for recreational use, among other concerns, and the availability of safer substitute drugs with comparable treatment efficacy. Methamphetamine exists as two enantiomers: dextromethamphetamine and levomethamphetamine.Methamphetamine properly refers to a specific chemical, the racemic free base, which is an equal mixture of levomethamphetamine and dextromethamphetamine in their pure amine forms. Dextromethamphetamine is a much stronger central stimulant than levomethamphetamine. Both enantiomers are neurotoxic and addictive.

As opposed to getting a short `high' from other drugs, this one will keep users pumped up from 6 to 12 hours and create feelings of paranoia, invulnerability, increased strength, euphoria, and may cause some to react in a violent fashion. As for health concerns, it rots the teeth, suppresses the appetite, induces insomnia, and causes brain damage among other things. Its ease of use makes it even more insidious as it can be swallowed, snorted, injected, or smoked and it is cheap to buy or can be easily manufactured by almost anyone.
Amphetamines can be found in virtually every community from the smallest towns to the largest cities and it radiates through all walks of life from the lowest to highest social classes. It is estimated that there are 26 million worldwide users of this drug. When law enforcement in the United States began to make a concerted effort to eliminate methamphetamine labs, supply then began to come from Mexico using routes already established by Cocaine Cartels.
The World's Most Dangerous Drug is only 50 minutes long but this is more than enough time to fully realize the shocking and devastating effects of methamphetamines. There are some graphic photos and a few disturbing video clips but they are necessary elements in complimenting and reinforcing the main message of this program. National Geographic has made a decent documentary here, and whether viewers want to watch this for educational purposes or just out of curiosity perhaps, I recommend it to everyone.

"There's been reports of 10-year-olds presenting at the Emergency Department here", says one clinical nurse. Orphan Jake saw his fortunes turn when he was recruited to deal by a motorcycle gang when he was only 11-years-old. "It was like winning the lotto or getting a licence to print money", he says. In areas with a desperate lack of treatment facilities and under resourced or non-existent police, a generation is being condemned to a life of drug abuse and crime.

Due to its affordability, 'yaba' has supplanted heroin as the golden triangle's main product and now Thailand is dealing with a generation hooked on this new and dangerous form of meth. VICE Japan went to investigate and visit a monastery running a rehab program that involves daily group vomiting sessions.
